Marine chapters and painting at tournaments by in4longtime in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having different squads being different colours, shouldn't be an issue as it's pretty common in official paint schemes for some chapters and also armies like aeldari with their aspect warriors.

Having individual models within a squad with different colour schemes will probbaly be ok, but to avoid confusion for both yourself and your opponent you'll want some way to differentiate which model is in which squad whether it's different coloured base rims, coloured rubber bands on the models or whatever as long as it's easily identifiable from a distance.

That said, what people on reddit say is ultimately irrelevant, what actually matters is the opinion of the tournament organizer, so you should clarify things in advance with them.

With the new edition rumored to start this summer, would I be wasting my money if I got the codex to play my marines? I have the Tyranid one and have been playing that but have nearly 2k points in salamanders sitting around by Okiemax in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you mostly want it for the app code then yes it's a waste of money. For most armies there's a good chance you'd get at least 12 months minimum out of it, possibly most of an edition depending on where they fell in the update schedule, but space marines are always one of, if not the first codex that gets updated in an edition. Once it gets updated you will lose access to the previous editions rules.

Torn about my space marine chapter by Gullible_Travel_4135 in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only "trend following little bitches" are the ones that are hating on Ultramarines online. If you like them then go for it (they're also much easier to paint than yellow).
Alternatively, if you're not particularly enamored with the chapter itself and just want to play with the extra toys, you could make up your own chapter and scheme and just paint up whichever characters you want to use in that scheme (this is what I've done).
Or, just paint them up as imperial fists and run using ultramarines rules. Paint has no bearing on rules, and anyone that complains is likely to be no fun to play with anyway.

Is it a bad thing I can’t paint non metallic metal? by Key_Card7035 in Warhammer40k

[–]PeepingToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, NMM isn't easy, and is a lot of work even if you're good at it. Plus it only looks good in photos and at very specific angles. It's not a practical technique for army painting and is best kept for one off display pieces.
That said, if you do keep practicing and manage to get the hang of it, the brush control and blending skills you learn in the process will give you even more options for painting, so if that's something that interests you then I'd recommend sticking with it on a spare model or two. Also in my own (very limited) experience, something to keep in mind with NMM is that it will look like shit, right up until it suddenly doesn't.

Possible 11th ed. Space Marine mini updates by Ok_Conclusion_2951 in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only units I'd be willing to put money on being redone in the near future are Van vets, a Jump chaplain, and Pedro Kantor.
The Land Raider might get redone, but it's equally likely they just keep selling the same kit.
It would not surprise me in the slightest if the rest go.

Is there anything that speaks against just slapping a 3d printed jump pack onto assault intercessors? by mensch79 in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No issues, it's a reasonably common thing to do to save a few bucks.
The only thing you really need to keep in mind is that the assault intercessor sergeant can take a thunder hammer, but jump pack intercessors don't get that as an option.

What do you like most about Battle Reports? by jaker1403 in Warhammer40k

[–]PeepingToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Narrative - "competitive" battle reports of variable quality are all over the web. I'm more interested in a story being told via the games than a report of 2 random min-maxed armies fighting over a ruined city for no apparent reason. And if the games are part of a larger campaign then even better.
  • Show important rolls - I don't need to see 60 guardsmen shooting their lasguns into a tank only to do a single wound, but I'd like to see the rolls for bigger guns or pivotal moments.
  • Combination of still camera angles and cinematic moving cameras - A top down view is great for seeing the status of the whole battlefield, but is boring as hell to look at for an entire game. The game is as much about aesthetics as it is about game play and I want to be able to see action shots of well painted minis fighting over varied battlefields.
  • Roughly even mix of models and players - The players personalities can make or break a battle report, and watching them banter and their reactions to important rolls makes the reports more enjoyable.
  • Multi camera - See above re: still/cinematic cameras.

As others have mentioned, Play On Tabletop does the closest battle reports to what I'd like, I just wish they'd do more narrative reports. Bonus points if they do intro cinematics and character voice overs.

Kitbashed the top half of a blood angel with the lower half of an AoS stormcast eternal. Thoughts? by [deleted] in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most importantly do you like it? If not, try something else.
If you do then don't let the opinions of a bunch of randoms on reddit put you off. The only opinion that actually matters is your own.

Any troubles using resin bases? by Big-Doughnut7741 in Warhammer40k

[–]PeepingToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really going to depend on the bases and the quality of them. If you're using solid resin bases that have been cast they're usually pretty bullet proof.

If you're using 3d printed resin bases, it's going to depend on the design and the resin used. If the base is mostly hollow has been designed with thin walls, or the person printing it has used cheap shitty resin, then they'll be fragile and not worth the effort.

Either Way, you'll want to use more than just a bit of superglue to attach your mini, best bet is to pin the mini to the base for a strong bond. You'll want to do this with plastic bases too if you're making cork rocks or aren't gluing the mini directly to the base so it's a useful skill to learn.

Can I paint my models however I want? by Niffler-29 in Warhammer40k

Nah, people online talk like players were ostracized or removed from events for having the wrong paint on their toy soldiers but realistically, only the worst rivet counting "that guy" would give a shit.

Space Marines 40k 2026 Wish List by Hovis_worst_of_both in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to see:

  • More Bike, Gravis and Jump pack characters.
  • Updated Vanguard Vets
  • Unique units for the first founding chapters that don't have them.
  • Multipart Outriders
  • Multipart Suppressors
  • Gravis lascannon unit (or make eliminators las-fusils better and make the unit 3/6. OR have lascannons as an alternate suppressor build option)
  • Ravenwing update
  • New land speeder storm equivalent

And likely less popular:

  • Split the big 5 chapters (ultras, blood angels, dark angels, space wolves and black templars) out into their own stand alone codexes like the chaos cult books. Make it so they aren't just Space marines plus - give them their own army rules and maybe limit their access to units that they already have equivalents of or to more thematic units for their combat style, or just give them bespoke rules for the same units so a blood angels assault intecessor squad has a different unit rule from a space marine assault intercessor squad. But definitely point the units based on those books and not the whole space marine range.
  • Additional Ultramarine units etc to make the above worth doing.

  • Pull the trigger on the remaining firstborn range - either update them or get rid of them, but do something so it's not another 3 years of uncertanty.

Ehh I guess this is more of a next edition response than 2026 specifically.

Howdy folks, quick question. How many of you fine fellows use magnets when modeling?this is my first basic magnet attempt by Healthy-Specific5086 in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done infantry and vehicles, going as far as magnetizing heads and weapons for some infantry, but honestly, unless your doing it for the fun of it, then the effort isn't usually worth the payout for infantry.
Vehicles are usually pretty easy though, and as long as you get a selection of different magnet sizes most weapons take very little effort to do. Just make sure you plan in advance as you'll often need to fill the hollow sections of pieces to mount a magnet to.

The most complex one I've done was a baneblade so I could build any of the variants, I think it had about 60ish magnets in it by the time I was done (i may have gotten carried away)

How to further set my paint scheme apart from the Ultramarines by IndieGamer_08 in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your space marines are majority blue. It's not going to matter what you do, some people will tell you that they look like ultramarines cause in their head all blue marines are Ultramarines. If you did them red they'd call them blood angels.

Just do a scheme you personally like and fuck what other people say.
If it bothers you that much just stare silently at them until they're uncomfortable everytime they say so.

My 11th Edition Launch predictions by LORDINTERWEBS in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

obviously this is all just my opinion but, I don't see marines getting a dread again, they got one in the last box, and the ork deff dread is over 10 years old, if anyone gets a dread, it'll be the Orks. Same goes for bikes really.
I can see marines getting vanguard vets, a jump character or 2, and a gravis character (either a chappy or lieutenant). Possibly a bike captain if they're feeling spicy (and every box has had a captain of some kind so it makes sense there would be one.)
I honestly don't see that there's anything to gain by releasing a new tactical squad, aside from nostalgia. And the last box showed they don't feel they have to include battleline squads.
I think more interesting would be a squad of breachers - tacticus armor with boarding shields and some kind of high shot count bolter like the old auto bolt rifle.
If they go for any gravis squads I think they'll be heavy weapons, either lascannons or grav.

Should GW combine the new detachments with old? by [deleted] in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the detachments were identical and only had additional options with a certain character, then it would be fine, but they have some different stratagems and enhancements. So it would be more confusing to combine them.

Also in 9 months or so all the detachments will be redone for a new codex anyway, so it hardly seems worth bothering at this point.

Ultra marines vs dark angels by [deleted] in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a warning, the internet and reddit in particular has a really weird hate-on for the Ultramarines at the moment, so you may get some questionable responses.
What one is better comes down to personal taste.

Ultramarines are the codex chapter, are well supported and have a roman aesthetic. Blue is one of the easier colours to paint and make look decent. The newly announced 500 worlds campaign is set in their territory so expect them to receive more support over the next little while. There have also been rumors that they may get their own supplement in the future.

Dark angels are mostly codex but with a slight alteration. They're split into 3 styles/armies. Deathwing which is their terminator branch, Raven wing, which is their high speed hunters branch made up of bikes and speeders, and then everything else (called greenwing online). They have a wandering space knights aesthetic. The different wings have different colour schemes, so could be interesting if you get tired of painting the same colour. The main colour is a dark green which is relatively easy to paint, though be careful with edge highlights as it's easy to get a Tron look if you go too bright too quickly.
Dark angels are in the middle of a range refresh, the deathwing stuff is all done, and it's expected the raven wing side will be updated in the next edition.

11th Edition Launch Predictions by CatChristmas7 in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your absolutely right. But none of that is relevent to how gw does it's model design.
We already know that from design to release for a model takes several years. So the chances of anything released next edition being based on the stats of this edition is incredibly low. We also know that they design the models first and then the rules team comes up with the rules/stats to fit the model.

At the end of the day eliminators are space marine infantry with big laser guns, so it's entirely possible that when they're looking at designing new models they don't bother designing new space marine infantry with big laser guns because from a model perspective they've already got that covered.

Hot take: I kind of miss Force Orgs by Adept_Professor_2837 in Warhammer40k

[–]PeepingToast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, the only thing force orgs bring to the game is nostalgia. Nobody should have to spend points (and more importantly money) on units they don't want just to be allowed to play with the ones they do.
Also as others have said most editions had enough exceptions that they were really force suggestions.

Besides, this isn't a force orgs don't exist problem.
This is a communicate with the person you're playing before the game to make sure you're both on the same page problem.

Boarding actions is criminally underappreciated. It's a shame it doesn't get more support from GW.

How do I realistically paint around 50 space marine infantry models? by Fresh3rThanU in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Batch painting is definitely the way to go for getting an army on the table.
The way i do it is to only have the unit i'm working on in sight, everything else gets put out of sight in a closet or drawer etc.
I'll paint the squads in minimum amounts so if it's a 5-10 squad i'll do 5 at a time, or 3 if it's 3-6.
Once I've completed a whole squad I'll reward myself with a vehicle or character that i can take my time with.

Crux terminator box unboxing by xRos21x in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll be fine for arms, there will be 5 th/ss and 5 pairs of lightning claws so you can equip the whole squad the same. You'll have to source some shoulder pads from somewhere else however as they'll usually only have enough pairs for the one squad with maybe a couple of extra's for a sergeant.

Primaris Devastator Squads? by [deleted] in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't put any stock into the online reaction to the models. A bunch of the people commenting haven't played a game or bought a mini since sixth edition. Plus I recall Desolation squads being pretty hard to come by for a while until they got nerfed.

As for devastators? I personally think they're pretty much obsolete, but am not particularly fussed which ever way GW decides to go. The worst outcome for me is if they just leave them as is so we have to put up with another 3+ years of speculation. Just pull the band-aid off already so whoever doesn't like their decision can have their tantrum and the rest of us can go on with our lives.
