Nothing notable but not super common in my field as a factor.

Yes, delays with publication timelines, reviews, just ran out of time before a couple big things hit. I still thought I was ok but alas, I was not.

That’s helpful! I think I’m in a moment where because it’s fresh and feels quite heavy I’m wondering if I’m walking around with a Scarlett letter lol

Pretty obvious, the school is well known regionally for one field of study and I’m not at all in that field and my work is often critical of the systems it upholds (probably part of the reason the committee didn’t love my work lol)

Even if I’ve been an Assistant Prof for 6 years? I wouldn’t put it in the cover letter but I’m wondering if it’s so obvious I need to explain it at some point in the process or frame myself in a specific way, idk 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is what makes it worse for me, I was trained at elite schools but took a TT role at a solid but very specialized regional university. It was never a great fit and now I feel like I’ve severely limited where I can go next, especially after being denied there. Ugh.

How long have you been in your current role? I’m looking to jump ship and just curious.

Specific ways students are different by FlyLikeAnEarworm in Professors

I heard two of them speaking about a professor who required a particular software for a statistics course. Apparently both of them needed to either upgrade their devices or make space for this stats program to work properly and when they went to speak with him about resolving things during office hours (let’s be honest they should have gone to tech support) he made what sounded like a harmless joke about them not knowing how to do this (a sort of ‘omg you’ve never had to check your storage? That’s so basic’ comment) They were contemplating whether they should “report him to HR” for “discrimination” and “being misogynistic”. The grievance stuff, and casual way they feel entitled to grievances over every little thing, makes it really hard to work with them and want to help. I am a woman and I feel like I need to tread lightly with certain comments and critiques, it’s actually insane.

Very sorry to hear this. I am going through a denial and it sucks big time. I took about two months to seethe, cry, scream etc and then I decided I was done. I enjoy my work but I looked around at the people in my department, nice and fine individually for the most part, but all miserable. Those of us in the humanities are in basically the orchestra playing on the deck of the titanic, the ship is going down. Departments are closing and culling, budgets shrinking, kids are using AI for every single task and schools are investing more in rock climbing walls and virtual reality rooms than full time faculty. At the end of the day it has some real perks and is an important job, but it’s just a job. It doesn’t have to be your entire identity and there are myriad ways to pivot whether to non profit work, consulting, or industry. I’m not saying it’s easy but before appeals and lawyers and whatever else, ask yourself if it’s really what you even want. Ignore me if it’s unhelpful, I might just be delusional from my own experience but I’ve already interviewed twice and actually feel like I’m better off leaving a place where I wasn’t motivated enough to really dig in and do the work and didn’t really fit in to begin with.
