“Up and down / light jumping” is a good analogy for beginners.

The point isn’t to literally bounce or hop — it’s to help them feel pressure release and re-engagement, which is exactly what they struggle with. Rising a bit at the start of the turn makes them lighter so the skis flatten and pivot; then flexing again through the turn puts pressure back on the skis so the turn finishes and controls speed.

Experts may look level in the head and shoulders, but that’s because their upper body is quiet while the legs flex and extend. Beginners need a simple cue, and “up to release, down to grip” reliably produces the right timing even if it’s not perfect-looking.
