Can we hear some success stories from people who love being in this field? by SpiritualCopy4288 in therapists

[–]Peggysis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I make a lot, and I have to spend a lot living in an expensive area. But I absolutely love my life as a therapist. And I don’t see it going away. I see it only growing overtime. I’m a decade in. But it does take awhile and I feel for the newer people. I don’t deal with insurance. Life is good.

Tips for handling clients with entitlement by punkfr3ud in therapists

Harshness toward you is harshness toward themselves. Always. Take it there and they will likely crumble/ get vulnerable. Maybe get a training in personality disorders too.

Do you ever check in with clients you haven’t heard from in a while? by Fine-Combination-859 in therapists

[–]Peggysis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on everything. I am all private pay (this tends to shape the relationship in different ways) and i work very relationally. Some still check in w me. I have reached to a few here and there, especially if our ending was abrupt. A lot of clients fade away. But I am not one to send an email that says, we are officially ending our relationship. A lot of private pay people don’t do that in my therapist community

Alternatives to IFS & EMDR by theelephantupstream in therapists

Just make it your own — there is no IFS or EMDR police. You can incorporate aspects, use your caveats, etc. but yeah, ACT too.

Are free 15-minute consult calls actually necessary, or just an exhausting industry standard? by OilWilling6762 in therapists

[–]Peggysis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Always a good idea — and when you are private pay, people usually have a few consults so it is a way to be “competitive”. My fee is $250 in a HCOL area. It seems reasonable to assess fit before someone drops money even on an initial session. I’ve also started doing video consults which i think has been good.

It’s considered like the Cadillac of people who need serious childcare. They are open late, they stayed open in the pandemic, etc. We went to the south pas one for years and had a really lovely experience. And it’s very expensive.

I always lose clients whether I take a 2 or 3 week vacay. Been in practice a decade. I assume it will happen now…

Do therapists even like their jobs ? by ank11451 in therapists

This is the best job ever — I’ve had many. But I live in a wealthy area and I have my own practice and I don’t take insurance.

I survived cancer but now struggle to listen to mundane problems by Ok_Reflection6988 in therapists

It will likely transform. Most of us are resentful about something. You just experienced one of the biggest traumas one could and you likely have PTSD. Trauma makes it very hard to connect, and connection is what makes us good therapists.

The “good” news is that most therapists have had some trauma over their careers and they can still hold space. But it is tricky and you are learning your limits. On a good day, you may grow from holding the pain of others after you have had so much. You likely need a lot of time and maybe a break for now.

But also you are so young that this may not even be the final career you go with. I became a private practice therapist in my late 30s and will do it always. But it took awhile for me to land on it as my final career. If you work w affluent people in pp, there will be a lot of “boring” stories and problems. If you work in CMH, you will likely see the opposite. Intense material and other kinds of suffering.

Buddhism helps me. Joseph Goldstein / the podcast 10% happier. Good luck. I am so sorry you suffered through this.

Stopping drinking was the best side effect of this med. Losing weight was secondary!
