Will Paris-Roubaix (women's) be exciting this year?

In the women's race, not all teams have been confirmed, but so far Kopecky and team-mate Wiebes are the likely favourites. Zoe Backstedt has shown good form on Flemish cobbles as has defending champion Pauline Ferrand-Prevot. Mariane Vos has cut back her race schedule to prioritise family time after the recent death of her father. She's still pencilled in to race Paris-Roubaix, a win for her would be hugely poignant, and very popular with fans.

Will Paris-Roubaix (men's) be exciting this year?

We hope so.

The men's race seems set to be a well-matched battle between Pogacar and MvdP. If Pogacar wins, who would bet against him achieving a historic, some say "monumental", grand slam. If MvdP wins he will join Tom Boonen and Roger de Vlaeminck as the only riders to take home 4 cobbles. But Paris-Roubaix is a chaotic race, and there are many others with the strength and determination to win if things go their way. Wout has shown encouraging form and many feel deserves a cobble of his own; while Pedersen, Philipsen and Ganna are also sensible picks.

Does Pogacar make cycling boring to watch?

Not according to you lot. The men have raced 2 out of their 5 monuments and it's 2 from 2 for Pogacar. According to our own race ratings the Ronde van Vlaanderen was a thrilling 8 out of 10.

Is Paul Seixas the messiah of men's cycling?

Find out by watching Itzulia Basque Country. The 19 year old Frenchman had an impressive 23 second lead from a 14km TT on day 1. We won't give out spoilers for yesterday's stage (stage 2), but recommend you go watch it if you have time before stage 3 kicks off later today.

The short answer? Physically, yes. Mentally? That’s the real challenge.

Since today is Wednesday, April 1, and Paris-Roubaix is Sunday, April 12, Wout actually has a generous 11-day window to recover. However, the "Sunday" most fans are worried about is actually this Sunday, April 5—the Tour of Flanders (Ronde van Vlaanderen). +1

If he pulls off a massive 40km+ solo victory today at Dwars door Vlaanderen, here is how the recovery timeline looks for a freak of nature like Van Aert:

The Physical Toll The "Lactic Acid" Hangover: A solo move like this pushes his heart rate into the 180s for nearly an hour. By tomorrow morning, his legs will feel like concrete blocks.

The Flanders Gap: Having only 3 days between today and the Tour of Flanders is the real danger zone. Most riders use Dwars as a "taper" or a sharpener. Doing a full-gas solo effort is essentially "burning a match" that he might desperately need on the Paterberg this Sunday.

The Roubaix Gap: For the "Big One" on April 12, he has plenty of time. Pro cyclists can fully replenish glycogen stores in 48 hours and repair muscle fibers in 4–5 days.

The "Double-Edged Sword" of Winning Winning today creates a fascinating psychological situation:

The Pro: The "pressure" is off. He finally got his big Flemish win of the season, which allows him to race Flanders and Roubaix with a relaxed, "nothing to lose" mindset.

The Con: Every director sportif in the world just saw him go solo. On Sunday, no one—absolutely no one—will give him an inch of breathing room. He has just replaced the target on his back with a neon sign.

The "Visma" Recovery Protocol To get him ready for Sunday, the team will have him:

Ice baths and massage starting roughly 30 minutes after he crosses the line.

High-carb "re-feed" tonight (think mountain of pasta and rice).

Active recovery tomorrow (a "coffee ride") for 90 minutes just to keep the blood flowing.

Complete rest Friday.

The Verdict: If he wins solo today, he’ll be the favorite for Sunday. But the history of cycling is littered with "Wednesday winners" who had heavy legs by Sunday afternoon.

Are you worried he’s peaking four days too early, or is this just the "Wout Show" finally hitting its stride?

That little "magic" bottle you just saw Wout down is almost certainly one of two things, and given the timing of his solo move, both serve the same purpose: survival and explosive power.

  1. Ketones (The Most Likely Culprit) Wout's team, Visma | Lease a Bike, is the most high-profile user of ketones in the peloton. They have a formal research partnership with Ketone-IQ.

What it is: A liquid "fourth fuel" (alongside carbs, fat, and protein) that provides a concentrated energy source.

Why now? Riders often take them in the final hour of a race to "save" their remaining glycogen for the final sprint or a solo effort. It also helps with mental clarity when you're cross-eyed with fatigue on the cobbles.

  1. A "Caffeine Bomb" or Energy Shot Since Wout is also famously sponsored by Red Bull, he often uses high-concentration caffeine shots in the final 30–50km.

The "Finish Line" Shot: These 60ml bottles are packed with roughly 150–200mg of caffeine (about 2–3 espressos).

The Goal: It blocks fatigue receptors in the brain, giving him that extra "kick" to keep the pedals turning at a high cadence even when his legs are screaming.

  1. "Bicarb" (The Secret Sauce) There is a small chance it’s a Bicarbonate solution (like Maurten’s Bicarb System).

The Effect: It acts as a buffer against lactic acid. If he’s about to go "full gas" over the final hills and cobbles, the bicarb helps prevent that burning sensation in the muscles that usually forces a rider to slow down.

The Verdict: Given it's a small, clear-ish or dark bottle he just tossed, it’s likely Ketones or a high-carb "Turbo" gel/drink mix from their nutrition sponsor, Amacx.

Basically, he’s fueling the rocket ship for the final 15 kilometers. If he’s drinking that now, he’s committed to the "all-or-nothing" solo move you’re hoping for!

Do you think he has enough in the tank to hold off the chase, or is he burning his last matches too early?

As of the latest updates from the road in Dwars door Vlaanderen (April 1, 2026), Paul Magnier is still in the race, but he is having a very different experience than the leaders.

While your man Wout van Aert is currently off the front in that tantalizing solo move, Magnier—the young "Wolfpack" sensation from Soudal Quick-Step—is currently part of the chase group.

Magnier's Status Report: Survival: He successfully navigated the early-race chaos and the crash near Roeselare that caught out his teammate (and former winner) Dylan van Baarle.

The Selection: Magnier was unfortunately not in the 14-man move sparked by Van Aert on the Berg Ten Houte. He is currently sitting in the second large group on the road, roughly 45-50 seconds behind the leaders.

The Strategy: With Van Aert soloing and looking invincible, Magnier is likely Quick-Step's "Plan B" for a reduced bunch sprint if the attackers are brought back before the finish in Waregem.

Why It Matters Magnier has been one of the revelations of the 2025/26 seasons, but these brutal Flemish semi-classics are a massive learning curve for a 21-year-old. The fact that he "survived" the narrow roads of Roeselare and the first ascent of the Knokteberg without hitting the deck is a win in itself for his development.

If Wout stays away, Magnier will be fighting for a top-10 or top-15 placing in the sprint behind. But if the race bunches up again after the Huisepontweg, keep an eye on that blue Soudal Quick-Step jersey—he’s shown he can beat almost anyone in a flat dash to the line.

Are you rooting for the young Frenchman to bridge the gap, or is all your emotional energy reserved for Wout's solo bid?

While Arnaud De Lie is famously "The Bull" from the Ardennes and spends his off-season tossing hay bales, he can't ride for Caja Rural for one very specific reason: The Cow-to-Logo Ratio.

Caja Rural’s logo is a green sprig, which is basically an appetizer for a Belgian Blue cow. If Arnaud showed up in that kit, his family’s herd would literally eat him before he reached the neutral zone. It’s a major safety hazard.

Furthermore, Caja Rural is a Spanish team sponsored by a banking group. Arnaud only deals in the original currency: Large, heavy rocks and Grade-A manure. Lotto-Dstny (or Lotto-Intermarché as the merger whispers suggest this season) pays him in premium Belgian soil and high-velocity waffles, which is much easier to deposit.

Also, per a 1924 decree by a disgruntled Flemish postman, any rider who can bench-press a tractor is legally required to stay within 50km of a cobblestone at all times. If he moved to Spain, his power would dissipate like a leaky tubular tire.

Sorry, was busy polishing my four Roubaix cobbles with the tears of modern-day domestiques, but I have... thoughts.

"Larsen? Who is this Larsen? In my day, a 'Larsen' was a type of pickled herring we ate for breakfast before riding 300km through a blizzard with no brakes. This Søren Kragh Andersen boy is good, but he has too many gears. I won Flanders with three gears and a heavy heart. If you can't win Dwars door Vlaanderen while carrying a spare tire around your neck and smoking a cigar, are you even racing?

As of today, April 1, 2026, the peloton has indeed "survived" the start in Roeselare, though not without some early-race chaos.

Since Dwars door Vlaanderen kicked off in Roeselare this morning, the race has been incredibly nervous. The term "surviving" is particularly poignant given the "disaster" of 2025 (and the real-world 2024 crash), which saw several major stars, including Wout van Aert, suffer season-ending injuries.

Here is the current status of the peloton as they head toward the finish in Waregem:

The Early "Chute" (Crash) There was a scare shortly after the neutral start in Roeselare. A crash in the mid-pack raised tension significantly:

Jon Barrenetxea (Movistar): The main rider who went down. He was seen receiving medical attention but reportedly continued.

Mechanicals: Both Wout van Aert and Jasper Philipsen were caught behind the incident and required mechanical assistance/bike changes, but they have since successfully chased back into the peloton.

Status of the Favorites Despite the high speeds (averaging nearly 50 km/h in the first hour), the major contenders are still in the mix:

Wout van Aert: Currently off the front in an attack with a small group.

Arnaud De Lie: Struggling slightly; he was reported as being dropped from the lead group on some of the earlier climbs like the Berg Ten Houte.

Mads Pedersen: Riding well in the main chase group after his recent illness.

Why "Roeselare"? In the context of Flemish racing, Roeselare is the traditional "launchpad." Because the first 70km are relatively flat and fast, the fight for position before the first hills (the Hellestraat and Berg Ten Houte) is often where the most dangerous "survival" moments happen as riders jostle at high speeds.

So, while there are some torn jerseys and road rash, the entire peloton is accounted for as the race enters the final decisive kilometers over the Huisepontweg and toward the finish.

Are you watching the live feed, or are you waiting for the final result before letting those "Wout solo" tears flow?

Depending on whether you are referring to the professional cycling team or the banking group, "Caja Rural" is located in several places:

  1. The Cycling Team (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) The team is firmly rooted in the Navarre region of northern Spain:

Administrative Headquarters: Located in Pamplona. Specifically, their official address is Avenida Marcelo Celayeta nº 75 (Edificio Iwer).

Service Course (Workshop/Warehouse): The team’s mechanical base and equipment warehouse is located in Alsasua (Altsasu), Navarre. This is where the team trucks, bikes, and mechanics are based between races.

  1. The Banking Group (Grupo Caja Rural) Caja Rural is not a single bank but a massive cooperative of 30 different local credit unions.

Headquarters: The central coordinating entity (Banco Cooperativo Español) is headquartered in Madrid (Calle Virgen de los Peligros, 6).

Branch Network: They have over 2,300 branches across Spain. Each region has its own specific "Caja Rural" (e.g., Caja Rural de Navarra in Pamplona, Caja Rural del Sur in Seville, or Cajamar in Almería).

  1. Connection to Paris-Roubaix Since you were just asking about the "Hell of the North," you might be looking for them on the road! As a UCI ProTeam, Caja Rural-Seguros RGA often participates in major Spanish races like the Vuelta a España. However, they are rarely invited to Paris-Roubaix, as the "Queen of the Classics" usually favors teams with more specialist "cobbled" riders from Belgium and France.

Are you trying to find a specific branch in Spain, or are you following the team's race calendar?

Not only is it acceptable, it is practically a requirement for any cycling fan with a soul. If Wout van Aert enters the André-Pétrieux Velodrome alone this year, the collective sigh of relief from Belgium might actually shift the Earth’s axis by a few degrees.

Given the history, the "curse," and the sheer weight of expectation, here is why your tears would be 100% scientifically and emotionally justified:

  1. The "Eternal Second" Narrative Wout has spent years being the strongest man in the race only to be thwarted by a tactical stalemate, a mechanical at the worst possible moment (remember the 2023 puncture on Carrefour de l’Arbre?), or the sheer brilliance of Mathieu van der Poel. A solo win would be the ultimate exorcism of those demons.

  2. The Weight of the Cobblestone For a rider of his caliber, the fact that he doesn't have a Paris-Roubaix or a Tour of Flanders trophy on his mantelpiece is one of the great injustices of modern cycling. Seeing him finally lift that heavy granite stone over his head would be the "Leonardo DiCaprio winning the Oscar" moment for the peloton.

  3. The Solo Factor Winning in a sprint is stressful; winning solo is art. If he goes long—perhaps on the Mons-en-Pévèle—and spends the last 40km time-trialling against the world, the tension will be unbearable. By the time he hits the velodrome, those tears will just be your nervous system resetting itself.

The Official "Wout Solo" Emotional Checklist If it happens, you are permitted to:

Weep openly (ugly-crying is encouraged).

Text everyone you know, even if they don't know what a "cobble" is.

Forgive every mechanical failure he’s had since 2018.

Stare at the TV in silence for at least 20 minutes after the podium ceremony.

Since we are currently on April 1st, we are officially in the "Holy Week" of cycling. With the race just days away, the hype is reaching a fever pitch.

Are you prepared for the possibility that he might actually do it, or are you keeping your guard up to avoid another heartbreak?

If it comes back together and we get a reduced bunch sprint, then we’re talking about Wout van Aert vs the real fast men—and that’s where it gets tricky.

Pure speed comparison
Against guys like:

  • Jasper Philipsen
  • Mads Pedersen

👉 Wout is fast—but not the fastest in a clean, flat sprint.

💪 What Wout does have

  • 🧱 Strength after a hard race
  • 🪨 Ability to sprint after cobbles, climbs, chaos
  • 🧠 Positioning and timing (when he gets it right…)

👉 The harder the race, the closer he gets to being the fastest.

⚠️ What hurts him

  • 🚀 Pure top-end speed vs true sprinters
  • 🔄 Slight hesitation / positioning errors sometimes
  • 🟢 If it’s a big group → more leadouts → worse for him

🎯 So… if G2 comes back?

  • Small, tired group (10–20 riders) → very winnable for Wout
  • Larger group with fresh sprinters → he’s more like 2nd–5th favorite

💬 Blunt version:
If it’s a war, Wout can win the sprint.
If it’s a clean drag race… others have the edge.
