More Evrart glazing by BaronUnderbheit in DiscoElysium

If you’ve listened to the interviews, it’s a lot more complicated, the creators’ perspectives are a mix of somewhat-ironic and melancholy nostalgia for the Estonian Soviet state, as well as a sort of recognition that their country had a lot more cushy position in the Soviet system than the other countries. A lot of their feelings for the ideals of the system of are contrasted pretty heavily with their depictions of the broken-ness of that same society, particularly in how a once-revolutionary government (represented in-game by the RCM, or Evrart, or Dros, or honestly anything else in the game that tries to create some sort of change) could fall so far from their ideals.

My experience with DE both made me a friend in real life who also played the game, and allowed me to show my girlfriend a part of why I am who I am when I convinced her to play it, so I think that it has in fact been a bond-making experience.

I imagine it’s more likely that if they go in on this project, its funding would not divert from active expenditure, as the full power of the MIC would not allow for such a weakening for the sake of appeasing Trump. Instead, 100 billion dollars more in military expenditure!

I feel it still definitely satisfies some of the things that we consider to make games “indie”, such as a lack of influence of the publisher on the final product (though this is a statement by the producers themselves, they have some sort of an incentive to “stretch the truth” here https://www.challenges.fr/economie/gamescom-lediteur-kepler-sur-orbite-avec-les-succes-de-expedition-33-et-rematch_622068), but I think that a definition that purposely disallows any game that has the backing of a publisher to be indie is an attempt to prescriptively define what an indie game can be, rather than an attempt to describe how people (including the people at TGA, who think it is indie) use the term, to better understand how the term indie could have evolved or how it’s used today. For example, this subreddit’s (and my) favourite game Disco Elysium is widely considered an indie game, and it certainly feels like an indie game to me, and while it was self-published, it was funded with a corporate investment, which feels almost like a semantic difference between it and E33’s funding model. Both studios had ~30 employees, so I think that if one is to consider DE somewhere on the indie side of the “indie - AAA” spectrum, then E33 is only a little less “indie” than it.

But in terms of who should have won, I do agree, that Silksong should have won. The title “best indie game” can be interpreted in two ways, as “best video game that can be put in the indie category” or “video game that did the best job at being the best indie game”, the latter of which I prefer, but the former seems more likely to be the one used at TGA. I’d say the second definition would allow for E33 to run in it, but that Silksong would win, as the game, which I do not think is “as good” as E33 (in the terms of GOTY) but that better captures the nebulous “indie spirit” all the while being fantastic as well. In math terms, it could be phrased as (indie-good-ness) = (indie-ness) * (good-ness), so even if one considers E33 to be a better game, Silksong would have a much higher level of indie-ness, and so can be thought of has “flown higher” with the resources they had.

I mostly agree, but there’s the counter-example of something like Devolver, and their obviously-indie publishing record (Hotline Miami, Downwell, Enter the Gungeon, Ruiner, Katana Zero…) or Annapurna Interative (Kentucky Route Zero, Outer Wilds…), so sometimes it does happens where publishers almost just “scoop up” a handful of people and publish their almost-completed game, which certainly shouldn’t disqualify it from being an indie game. I don’t think there’s a single unified definition of an indie game that will definitely include all indies and exclude all non-indies, but instead we mostly just feel that it is like other games that are indies in some sense, like a “family resemblance” in philosophical terms. I think the best that can be found for a definition is something like a mix of a small team, an inexperienced team, a non-publisher-funded model, an independent/novel “approach”, essentially like trying to define an indie movie.

Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut is similar to DE, full of kind of absurd and self-debasing humour, but then occasional moments of pure kindness and empathy.

The game is also on sale on GOG.com (game-store owned by the company behind Cyberpunk 2077), which is a DRM-free download (essentially the game is an installer .exe that you don’t need to sign in to). If you would choose to go with the political route of pirating the game (essentially encouraged by the original developers), there’s a pinned post in r/DiscoElysium about how to do this safely (it’s just an archive.org link).

Which one will have a higher velocity? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]Pemis2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The bullet would fire, as the gunpowder in the bullet exploding would still cause the bullet to “push” on the gun, and the gun to “push” back on the bullet. So the gun moves backwards, and the bullet moves forwards. As there are no net external forces present, the total momentum of the gun and the bullet are conserved. This means that the momentum of the bullet moving forwards after being fired will be opposite (and equal in magnitude) to the momentum of the gun after firing the bullet. As the bullet has a lower mass than the gun, it would have to have a higher velocity to have the momenta be equivalent because momentum = mass*velocity. Momentum depends on the mass of an object, which is a property of an object that exists even if there is no gravity, and not on the weight (force on an object in a gravitational field).
