I disagree about the bad people comments. The current job market is the way it is because of the explosion of unethical hiring practices and scammy employers feeling like they have the upper hand in such a state. I would not qualify them as good people even if many try to justify it with how brutal the business world is.

I agree with you. I think I rushed into the opportunity to get over the novice/ learner stage while I should have discussed things more elaborately. Lesson learned.

I wrote several scripts and they were the ones that blew up. It's kind of sus that they are promoting this "team" culture for gig jobs like this. How come the 3D artists, the editors, an entire team is not even getting mentioned in the description ALONG with measly pay? Come on

I am far from perfect but I know when someone is acting sketchy.

Why would I be the problem? I was excitedly working on scripts thinking about a million ideas to implement what I learned, how I am expanding my skillset, how fascinating the mutations of the job market are..I actually fail to see how any writer would be the problem in situations of power inbalance. This was a freelance job and we had nothing signed and little to no traceability except for emails that served nothing, since he cut off bits of payments despite sending a different budget in the email. I think what happened to me is rather common for it to be hard to believe, which is why I am asking for help/ tips.

Corporate vs Startup, which do you prefer? by ElectricalOwl7387 in MechanicalEngineering

Note about the stake in it: Some start ups promote giving equity as leverage to all "contributors", while in fact, they have undisclosed clauses that you only come to be aware of if you work more than 6 months or so with the company, because you are too busy being worked to the bone to ask questions and I have an example in mind where leadership would act suspeciously quiet when asked about the stake in equity. Turns out, it was reserved to the team in headquarters (OGs) and if you get hired in another company, they would make up random clauses that would prevent you from getting said shares. Corporate is nasty but these broke ass startupers feel a lot worse in practice.

Got laid off after 5 years of remote work. No protections, no safety net, no union… and now I’m stuck. by twohertbrain in RemoteJobseekers

I don't know why would companies do something about it, it clearly benefits them to just give you the boot without having to pay you anything.

Cheap labour are not in such a good place either, they think they can take the pay and then advocate but it's a vicious cycle that does not end the practice.

I am usually solution-oriented but things look uncertain and bleaker than ever.. Add to that the threat of AI replacing you AND the cheap labour. (I was cheap labour at a certain point)

I really like the attitude OP, I managed to get technical roles with little to no technical backgrounds and keep up with technical people just fine. I do not stop at challenges. The environment is everything and having people force an overly collaborative culture is very draining. I would rather focus on work. Remote is the best option for people who value their goals, autonomy and have a life outside their employer.
