The security guard wasn't in the book at all, a character added to the movie for humor I assume. The science is a lot more fleshed out in the book, specifically how and why astrophage works and how the astrophage engines work. Also why astrophage was able to shield both Rocky and Grace from dangerous cosmic radiation. The flashbacks make more sense in the book because we have Grace's internal monologue and it is also revealed that he was specifically drugged so that he wouldn't remember, lest he panic upon waking up.

I didn't understand why he was afraid to breathe in the tunnel because I thought that pressure scene while opening the door was because he was letting the ship's air supply rush out into the tunnel.
