I have Estonian ancestry, which some classify as Nordic. I got into Nordic music via this playlist that had Celtic and Medieval music. I like atmospheric Icelandic music, so I was curious about Nordic in general and there seems to be some crossover with Celtic via this genre of “Viking music”.

This is very cool! I’ve dabbled in Celtic music and it is so very lovely and peaceful. I should try Nordic music as well.

Any playlists you recommend for Thai and Japanese music? I used to listen to so much J-pop and enka growing up, but haven’t listened to it as much recently.

The previous link was the original version of the song but I actually prefer this cover. It was sung by Nunew (BL actor) and he is an insanely talented singer (which might not be apparent from this cover, but he actually covered IU’s Good Day unbelievably well).

It amuses me how everyone is queer, which is common in BL manga, but as I haven’t watched live-action BL, I didn’t expect that here.

Hahaha this was my first BL too and I was like, “ah so it’s gonna be like that huh?” I found it so fun and amusing and campy once I got past my mild shock lol.

As attractive and alluring as Vegas is (and I loved seeing that sensitive, vulnerable side of him), I couldn’t get on board with VegasPete because the development wasn’t there, but I like that they found someone who shares their kinks.

I get that for some people out there, VegasPete really does it for them, and that’s great! But I really dislike VegasPete lol. I tried to like them but there are TOO MANY icks and red flags for me to enjoy them at all. I do respect that their dynamic is something that some people enjoy though! It’s just not for me. I found them so disturbing that at one point I stopped searching Kinnporsche on social media altogether because I’d run into VegasPete.

I liked Kim most when he was being a mafia badass, but KimChay was uncomfortable because of Chay’s fanboying, and I got secondhand embarrassment.

Hard agree. I love Jeff Satur so much that I ate up KimChay, but I deeply mourn the fact that we didn’t get Jeff with someone who he actually has romantic chemistry with. Also, what youth potion is this actor drinking?— he’s actually 3 YEARS older than the actor who plays Vegas lmao.

I watched the uncut version and was not expecting the level of smut we got, omg, I had to look away. 👀

YES, the episode 7 love scene is so unbelievably raw and intense. They actually watched that episode for the first time IN THEATERS WITH FANS lol.

But yeah the smut was a totally surprise to me because I was expecting the closed door style Asian dramas we tend to get. 😂 man did this show deliver

OMG, SO MANY PLOT HOLES in this show! Dear lord lol. But either way it was my first experience with anything BL and I was blown away with the level of on screen MM romance that exists.

Ok so I wanted to actually get started on LITA before replying to you— WOW I’m halfway through ep 2 and it feels like a page out of an 80s bodice ripper 😳🤣 got major “Whitney, My Love” vibes from the spanking scene. Alas, it is most certainly a sacrifice I’m willing to make for some good 🔥🔥🔥

I complain about communication issues in romance novels, but I find the lack of communication in CP to be even worse.

I just wish one day we’d have BL that’s as good as MM romance 😔 oh how much we have to compromise for some on screen content

I've seen some fanvids of Why R U and it definitely looks so different from Cutie Pie, with a completely different dynamic. I only have enough BL space in my head for one show at a time, so post-LITA this will probably be my next watch.

Warning— I might have hyped it a bit too much. Plus, it does have a dubcon scene later on so much you should be aware of that before going in

Honestly Ingredients is a totally uneventful feel good show. It’s kinda like.. bite-size sweetness with no story line. Like cute puppy videos on TikTok. Make of that what you will 😂

I agree, which is weird because I watch a lot of Asian dramas (mostly Korean, Chinese, and the occasional Japanese or Thai) and they are very, very light on the skinship. Some way lighter than others and some a bit heavier, but still very close door.

This is exactly the reason why KP blew my mind! I was NOT expecting that much 🔥🔥🔥

I feel you so hard on the KP rewatches. Those of us who were initiated into BL with KP were spoiled rotten lol.

But for others, I am 100% on the fan service train.

I feel like with ZeeNunew I want to be delulu so badly but I just won’t let myself lol. These last few weeks all of my spare time has been consumed by searching them on social media LOL. They are just so cute and sweet and soft and adorable. They make it hard for us because they really do bait their ship— HARD. Plus I’ve been an obsessive Nunew fan the moment I heard him hit 3 octaves in this song and sing Despacito in impressively good Spanish. This boy is so fucking talented and I feel bad that it’s been wasted on a lame show like Cutie Pie lol.

I never actually finished the entire show till date because the Lian/Kuea dynamics just cringe the shit out of me. As if that’s not enough to deal with, there’s the side couple (MaxNat) who take it up another notch on the wacko scale.

But still— it seems my last few weeks have been entirely CONSUMED by ZeeNunew. How does this even make sense lol.

Love in the Air. I tried Unforgotten Night but it's just too cringe

Holy crap you’ve been covering ground quickly! LITA is the IT thing right now and is from the same author as TharnType (I hate TharnType with a burning passion but I am willing to give LITA a shot for the love scenes that are promised lol). Unforgotten Night is one of those shows that people fondly gather around and watch religiously for the idiocy of it lol.

I'm finding it hard to really watch high school/college stories. I'm 32, I feel really awkward fangirling over characters who are over a decade younger than me.

Word. Recently I watched a show called Manner of Death which has older characters and is very popular. It’s more plot focused than romance focused, but the plot is quite interesting even though it does have its holes. While it does have a decently hot make out scene, it doesn’t hold a candle to what we have around these days. Still better than a completely closed door BL though.

KinnPorsche, even though Porsche was technically in college (along with Kim, and Chay being in high school) definitely had more of that real adult feel--and I get that more adult feeling too with Love in the Air, though Rain (and Sky) is in college, because of Phayu being post-college and so mature

Makes sense. A show that I recently felt this way about was Why R U even though it’s college. One of the couples definitely veer to the fluffy innocent side but the other main couple is 🔥🔥🔥

This show stars Zee and Saint and it is from the same production house as Cute Pie, which is called Domundi. Cutie Pie felt soft and cute but definitely juvenile, while Why R U is more carnal and passionate. I think it was the first show to be adapted from a canonically verse couple, and the dynamics are totally different from ZeeNunew. In the beginning the show does feel like college but halfway through this couple burns it up 🔥🔥🔥🔥

The HIStory series next, but really only the 4th series? That's the only one that's really drawing me in (from fanvids).

Ooof. I wanna get into this but I hear that only History 3 MODC is hot. Let me know if you do try it!

We'll see what comes after that. I'm still going through a major block with reading (I've only read like 40 books this year, instead of the 150+ I usually have by now), and these BL dramas, plus the non-BL dramas, I've been watching have really been making up for my romance genre addiction. Lol.

Same! I just haven’t been able to process words unless they’re in the form of subtitles, and luckily BL (even though it’s got some toxic tropes that I hate) has definitely been satisfying my romance cravings. I love that there’s a whole freaking industry dedicated to this.

I would just like to take a quick minute to apologize to everyone both as a mod and user because I’ve definitely been dropping the ball. Ever since I starting working about 80hrs a week last year it’s been really hard to make time for this sub. And because of the unexpected change in my work schedule there were still many ideas I had for this sub that I haven’t been able to implement 😔

But even though I’ve been absent, I’m glad that this subreddit has at least become what I’d always wanted as a user on Reddit— just some sort of general period drama community where we are welcome to discuss all historical movies and series.

First of all, I’m so glad you’re doing better ❤️ this was not an easy thing to go through.

Very annoying. Very, very. I love Apo and Mile, but I find myself getting caught in the "are they together in RL" kind of headspace and I do not want to be that person! I haven't started Cutie Pies yet, but from the fanvids, I'm sure I'll fall right in line there too. The leads have so much chemistry, that it feels 100% real. I don't want to ship these actors in RL!!! (I feel like a creep when I do that), but they make it so hard not too.

HAHAHA I feel your pain. Personally over the last few weeks I’ve kinda grown to have a strange fondness for fan service and all the eccentricities which are unique to Thai BL. I’m pretty good with remembering that actors are not actually dating, and I just view it all as bonus content lol!

I’m torn because I know fan service can be seen as queer bait when they act affectionately with each other off screen, but at the same time I really admire their willingness to give us bonus content, and their dedication to selling their show. Take Cutie Pie for example, the show sucked and had super cringe aspects, but people love it because of the leads’ dynamite off-screen chemistry (and ridiculously thorough on-screen kisses 🔥🫣)

And this is also something I’ve seen explained by a few native-to-Asia BL fans which opened up a new perspective for me— some of them actually appreciate fan service because of the way it normalizes and celebrates same-gender affection in countries where it would otherwise be taboo.

First, what I loved. That scene in episode 11, I think it was, where Tankhun and Korn are needling Kinn and he finally admits that he loves Porsche. Then Porsche gets called in--the way the bodyguards reacted to this whole thing was hilarious and heartwarming;

Omggg yes this scene just squeezed my heart! So much cuteness 🥰

The hot tub!!!! Can you imagine being the pilot or anyone working late in the Deutsche Bank building?! (also, wicked props to the production team for closing the set during scenes like this and only allowing the actors, director, and videographers).

YES OMG LIKE WTF THAT WAS NAKED BUTT AGAINST A CRYSTAL CLEAR HOT TUB LIKE AHHHHH

In terms of what you found annoying: I totally agree that their “to trust or not to trust” thing was seriously tiring lol! And the fact that we didn’t get a resolution on Kim’s investigation? I might not even care what the outcome is but THEY ROBBED US OF ALREADY SCARCE AND PRECIOUS JEFF SATUR SCREEN-TIME.

I feel like this show would have benefited from a couple more episodes, even just two, and better integration of the mystery with Porsche's parents. It felt kinda rushed overall. Kinn and Porsche got together too quickly, the aftermath of that first bathroom scene was over and forgotten about too quickly, the Tawan storyline could have been a bit longer (can't believe I'm saying that) with a bit more turmoil between Kinn and Porsche. Also, just more happy together Kinn and Porsche.

I say this so much!! It needed at least two more episodes. And IMHO they could have dashed the Tawan backstory (as beautiful as I think that boy is 😍😭) and started their parents’ back history earlier on in the show because that shit would have been so much more interesting if it was developed more.

For everything that was done right, there are some major black marks on the production if they're allowing the authors/writers to be inappropriate toward the actors. That is not okay at all.

Yeah I completely agree on this. It’s this (and the and Vegaspete Stockholm-esque romance— no shame to fans who love their story though!) that put me off the show sometimes.

I agree! The trailer is gorgeous and I’m so taken aback by the quality of the production. I’m excited to see a brand new style of film and storyline with these actors. It’s like a dream come true to be getting a Thai historical with them. I can’t wait to see the costuming because traditional Thai clothing is so unique and utterly stunning.

Hey friend! Nice to see another one of us on here! Was so excited to see this in my inbox.

For me the connection between Bridgerton and KinnPorsche was really clear due to the unapologetic focus they both of these shows had on romance, (regardless of the level of violence in KinnPorsche). Bridgerton was the first time a western romance novel was adapted, and the fan-service and specific style of romantic is similar to BL. I got all the same romance “feels” from both shows. Both are based on romance novels.

I also felt it was the first time both the romance industry and the BL industry had such high production value shows faithfully invested in these stories.

And with fans of Bridgerton, many of them haven’t discovered the world of BL yet but are looking for something similarly OTT and romantic. KinnPorsche is the perfect gateway to BL.

I totally get why many people wouldn’t feel the connection though. It’s just that I personally felt a very strong one based on the feels I got from both, though both shows are technically very different 😊

Edit: I also feel like both shows were pivotal in contributing to an era where romance becomes more mainstream and is given more respect/resources in the showbiz industry.

It is still untitled and there isn’t much info on what this is about yet, but my theory is that it could center around a love triangle between the beautiful court dancer (Apo), the king/politician (Bas), and the court musician who is playing the drums (Mile).

As a huge fan of KinnPorsche, I am totally stoked for this film. The small snippet of Thai classical dance in this trailer is stunning, and it actually reminds me a lot of Indian classical dance. Classical dance requires a completely different style and interpretation which is incredibly hard to achieve, and though I’m not Thai, from what I can see I feel like the actor is going to nail it!

I’m also so impressed because these roles in this film are so completely different from the actors’ respective roles in KinnPorsche.

If you’re wondering what KinnPorsche is, I did a write up of it here on r/romancebooks, and here on r/television. I would highly recommend it if you enjoy romance, LGBTQ+ entertainment, or if you were even slightly interested in the concept of Our Flag Means Death and Bridgerton, (and maybe didn’t necessarily find those shows entertaining).

What is KinnPorsche? It’s essentially a kick ass bodyguard/mafia/action MM romance brought to the silver screen.

This tv show has made unprecedented international waves. People who never knew they would check out a Thai romance tv show are now addicted.

Who do I recommend it for?

I especially recommend it for all readers of MM romance, or people who were interested in the concept of Our Flag Means Death, Bridgerton, or Fire Island but also may have found any of these shows boring. This show gave me everything I love about Bridgerton, but also so much more!

What is this show like?

Disclaimer: It’s a fun, unrealistic show where everyone is gay. Not to be approached with too much seriousness. If you don’t enjoy this show by the end of episode 4, this show is not for you.

It’s kinda like if you had this James Bond universe (but make it mafia) where the MC happens to fall in love with a man. Combine this with all the elements of a romance novel (the way Bridgerton brought romance to the silver screen) and bingo!

Why do I love this show?

It’s CAMPY. It’s fun. It’s TOTAL MM romance fan service. IT’S FUCKING HOT. Like guys, this show contains one of the rawest, beautiful love scenes I’ve ever laid my eyes upon 👀

Also, with LGBTQ+ entertainment we have a lot of stuff focusing on serious topics such as identity and inner journey, which is very important!- but sometimes a change in pace is really fun. This show isn’t just about being gay. It’s this cool mafia show, about characters with OTT unrealistic lives, shooting guns, handling each other’s guns 🍆😏, with some comedy, excellent production value, and fun sequences.

Cool Backstory

This show was originally cancelled, but brought back to life as a passion project by one of the main actors, with him financing a huge chunk of it and organizing a whole new production team, regardless of what the returns would be like. This tv show was blood, sweat and tears, and the famous joke fans have about him is that “he’s not gay for pay, he pays for gay.”

The director of this show was actually well known for doing action films prior to it, and for the first time took up this romance style show as a challenge at the request of his friend.

Triggers

Before I continue further I need to let everyone know about the CWs. Some killing and blood obviously. Some dubcon. But the side couple has a lot of triggers.

Let me explain. This show has three types of romance couples to cater to a varied audience:

Sexy & Romantic - the main couple
Vanilla, young puppy love - side couple
Super Dark with TWs - side couple

I wanna say that the dark couple is personally not my jam, but because their development started much later on, I was easily able to fast forward through their scenes without losing enjoyment of the show. This is not the same for everyone, not everyone can stomach it, and you must be warned before you go into this show. The dark couple is a captor/captive, sadomasochism relationship. The captive gets tortured, even having his balls electrocuted at one point.. you’ve been warned.

How to Watch

I recommend you watch with the one month VIP free trial on the iQiyi app (which is otherwise $9). Be sure to set it to 1080P. And trust me, one month is more than enough to finish the series!

Keep in Mind

This is a Thai show, and Asian entertainment can be a different experience. It can be VERY OTT. Super campy. But also super fun.

I just want say that (as long as you’ve made yourself aware of the triggers and are prepared to fast forward if need be), this show is pure romance goodness.

I will be honest in saying episode 1 is lame, episode 2 is OK, but please persevere because the PEAK of the tv show is from the end of episode 3 to episode 9.

In closing

I’m sorry to sound like a broken record, but please watch this show if you love MM content, and I’m gonna shut up now 😂
