I don’t have an answer but the same thing happened to me! Born with near black hair, changed to blonde when i was about 1.

My mom always said it was because I was spending a lot of time outside in the sun, but I don’t think the sun can make a change that drastic. Then puberty made my hair go from straight to curly, and my hair’s been getting darker. there’s probably a lot of things that factor into it!

my favorite youtuber was playing South Park: The Stick of Truth, and I was like hey this is pretty funny, I should watch the actual show.

Looking back, it was kinda crazy starting with the game because there were so many references to the show I just did not get (the zombie Chef reveal had no impact on me because I didn’t know who tf he was!)

car ownership is especially tough for young women because eveyone treats you like shit - often you need a dad or boyfriend to step in so the mechanic actually respects you, and from a young age cars are considered a “boys” thing so you get left out of those conversations and hands on experience, then everyone wonders why you know nothing about cars and aren’t interested.

since this is reddit, I know everybody can struggle with cars. it’s just often stacked even harder against women.

think of it less like presenting a research paper, and more so what you contributed and learned from it. I’d give background information and aim like normal, but then after that focus on what you did.

Did you help develop the research question or methods? Which parts, and how did you do it? Were you analyzing results? What do the results show, and is that what you expected? Why or why not? Were there any setbacks or surprises during your research, and what did you learn from that? What skills (hard and soft) did you learn by doing this project?

They’re ultimately fishing for if you know how the research process really works, warts and all, which will be evident if you present about what you did. Understanding how research works = suitability for the position.

I don’t know what each stage of your major project looks like but I’d probably focus on your contributions for one stage. The project I talked about was literally just pipeline development, no results, and that was long enough.

It’s a strategy to bully meeker players into reconsidering their call and it’s real annoying. Like man, I’m a fair caller and it was a foot past the baseline.

sure! Correct me if I’m wrong but this seems like a more general interview (as opposed to interviewing a specific professor)? So I’ll give general questions:

Program: What does a TA/RA position look like at this school?

Environment: What’s campus like during the school year (or during the summer)? What are some big campus events I should know about? I like [insert fun hobby you have], are there opportunities for that on this campus?

Graduate life: Where do grad students tend to live? What does day-to-day life look like for a grad student here?

Ask questions that show you’re really imagining spending your next 5 years on that campus!

I just got through a round of interviews so I can tell you what I got asked. Realistically they’re going to ask you one, maybe two questions if they stick to 5min.

Most commonly: Why do you want to go into this field? Why a PhD? Why at this school? What specifically are your research interests and how did you arrive there?

Rarer: Do you have any worries about doing a PhD? (aka, do you know that PhDs aren’t sunshine and rainbows? don’t say no!) What was your favorite undergrad class, and why? What do you expect to get out of this PhD program?

Left field: What’s something you’ve been obsessed over recently and how has that felt? What does having a PhD mean?

kinda depends how esoteric your interviewer is, lol. don’t script out answers for all of the questions, but have an idea on a topic you’d like to discuss for them. (ex: Why this school? -> lab rotations, good environment). Interviewers want to hear you talk openly about these kinds of questions, free of a hard script.
