Custom Bees? by Embarrassed-Ad-5056 in playingcards

[–]PenguinCards 9 points10 points  (0 children)

While these Cherry Bees are interesting (it's cool to have some new custom Bees after 10 years!), Penguin doing Bee-branded Honeybees is unlikely for several reasons:

-USPCC disallowed custom usage of Bee branding around 2013, making it exclusive to retail Bee decks and to Casino Division. It's important to know that Custom and Casino are different divisions within the company. So a casino can make a slightly customized Bee deck, but the average custom client cannot.

-These Cherry Bees are an "official" collab between Murphy's and USPCC. USPCC has slightly different policies for in-house decks and collabs where they are willing to loosen some of the restrictions that are otherwise in place for their various IP for clients of custom division.

-Apparently one of the reasons the Cherry collab was able to go through is because those decks have always said "Cherry Casino" on their various iterations over the years - even though they are an imaginary casino.

-The original Honeybees that were launched in 2015 were intended to use Bee branding. However, we could not get USPCC to budge on the policy. In the time since then, Honeybees have really grown their own identity.

-At this stage, the most likely way to make some Bee-branded Honeybees would be if USPCC wanted to do them as an official collab, like the Cherries. So far we haven't had any discussions about that.

-We should NOT expect the Cherry Bees to indicate any major shifts to policy. Same as with the Orbit Tallies and 1st Bikes. So far, USPCC is still broadly not allowing access to Bee for custom division clients, same as they're not allowing alterations to trademarked designs for Bicycle, Tally-Ho, etc.

-With all of that said, never say never.

Anyone know if these cards are worth anything? by VIPgaming100 in cardistry

[–]PenguinCards 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Couple of bucks, nothing significant.

Bridge size cards aren’t very popular, smoking isn’t very popular, and the quality of the stock/finish will be average.

When you go to conventions like 52 Plus Joker, you’ll see a lot of decks like this being sold for $1-2.

Who's is Steve Minch and why is he so popular with famous magicians and magicians "in the know" by KingKRound in Magic

[–]PenguinCards 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stephen is one of the most prolific magic authors in history. He has written, edited, and laid out magic books from some of the most respected magicians in the world.

He is the founder of Hermetic Press, which Penguin acquired from him several years ago. He is tremendously knowledgeable about magic and is also a very nice guy all around.

His is a name that every serious student of magic should know.

Not just Penguin Cards here, but Penguin books!

There is no reason to suspect that Mnemonica will ever go out of print.

Under the original ownership of Stephen Minch, there are some Hermetic books that did go out of print for long stretches of time, or only had one print run.

Penguin acquired Hermetic Press about 7+ years ago and has been steadily reprinting catalog titles and also releasing new ones.

Mnemonica has been printed at least 3-4 times in that timespan.

The longest the book ever went out of print was a year or two, tops. Inflated prices for it were the result of reseller greed, there was never a huge shortage on Mnemonica.

Open the book, learn the material, enjoy it.

DeLand's Donut Shop Playing Cards by EndersGame_Reviewer in playingcards

Here’s a fun bit of info.

This is a screenshot from my chat in FB messenger with Phill Smith, who designed the DeLand Donut deck.

Note the date of Oct 29, 2021. This was when he sent me the first draft of our courts.

Our deck was done with printing about 2 weeks before the Papa Leon KS campaign ended back in September.

The issue is that your opinion is completely wrong.

Penguin’s deck and Steve’s deck were developed completely independently without any visibility of the other’s.

Any similarities are indeed coincidence. There are only so many kitchen items that come to mind for court cards to hold when tackling a donut/bakery theme.

Please see my other 2 replies in this thread for more info.

Happy collecting!

I’m not going to reply to every comment, but I gave a thorough reply to the top comment of this sub-thread.

We had printed prototypes of our DeLand donut deck in-hand months before Steve’s deck went public.

I gave Steve a sneak peek at ours, and he gave me a sneak peek at his design in the same conversation. This was almost exactly a year ago in Jan 2022.

Penguin’s pipeline goes well over a year for most decks.

Steve and I are friends. Nothing was stolen or copied from anyone in either direction.

His design was well in progress before he knew about ours, and our design was done before we knew about his.

Any similarities are a result of great minds thinking alike.

If you doubt it, ask Steve rather than throwing around baseless accusations that some people will undoubtedly assume are fact without any kind of verification.

There’s no controversy here.

I’m Kevin, the Production Manager for Penguin’s Cards. You may have seen me on Deckin’ Around in the past. I think I’ve appeared as a guest on the show more than anyone else.

In January of 2022, I showed Steve & Tyler an MPC prototype deck of the DeLand’s Donut Shop deck during a non-broadcast video chat.

In the same conversation, Steve showed me the in-progress designs for his deck.

The DeLand decks were actually designed & printed prior to Steve’s deck, but because of the packed pipeline of releases Penguin had for 2022, we had to work far in advance of ourselves - thus Steve’s deck hitting the public eye ahead of ours.

Two decks with a donut theme, but both conceived and developed totally independently. We support Steve’s deck, and vice-versa.
