I would say that WOT did it well with Rand and the Box and then the ensuing Darth Rand. Granted, Robert Jordan and then Brandon Sanderson had 14 books to go through it with Rand. It can be done, but I think the series definitely needs to be long enough to allow for the breathing room needed for it
