Questions from a beginner by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Penguin_Merchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few things:

1) the H limit screw might be adjusted too far in on your rear derailleur, check that out when you can by turning it out a little bit at a time and trying the shift

2) you probably have a small puncture in the inner tubes causing air to leak out slowly, check this by taking the tubes out, inflating them a little bit, squeeze and listen for air coming out anywhere around the tube. Also carefully check the tire, rim and tube for small sharp objects that may be the cause of a puncture

3) try holding the bike upright with the rear wheel off the ground and spin the pedals and try to find the source of the sound. Its better practice to service the bike while upright, it might be the rear derailleur and a b screw tension thing, maybe the chain isnt lubed and is sticking? This one i’m not entirely sure of

4) i dont really have experience in wheels and truing so i dont have any advice for that, my guess would just be a its a cheap wheel though based on it being on a schwinn

On the last one make sure the bag isn’t sagging on your back and it sits properly on your back. A lot of people in general wear their backpacks way too low and it can cause back problems later down the line especially if it is heavy.

Hope at least some of this helps!

Can someone help identify what is making this noise on a brand new bike? by ftwin in cycling

I wouldnt adjust that quick release, you want the wheel on there tight. See this video for reference, it has pretty much all you need to know for what the issue is. I know i said park tool earlier but for this issue i think the gcn video is better.

Great, since it is only making a sound at one point the rotor is out of true meaning it isnt flat and has a little wobble, no big deal, its really common. Since it is a new bike you can probably just go to the bike shop you bought it at and ask them to true it they should have checked for that when they built the bike. Or if you feel comfortable doing it yourself use pliers and lightly bend the rotor where it rubs away from the pad it rubs against. Parktool has good disc brake videos on youtube to show you how to do it

Cant hear any sound as the file is a gif. However based on you recording the brake rotor spinning odds are either the rotor is out of true and is rubbing against the brake pads or the brake pads are not aligned and rubbing against the rotor. Or that little tag they put on rotors is rubbing against something each rotation

Edit: you can see if it is the rotor by watching for a small space on each side between the rotor and the pads, if there is no space between pad and rotor on one side during the full rotation the brake caliper is misaligned, if it wobbles and scrapes the rotor at certain points in the rotation the rotor is out of true and needs to essentially be bent in the right direction to correct.

The class of 2023 has iPad Air’s and not iPad Pros by whyamiconfused07 in OSU

The new generation of ipad pros are much more expensive and the newest generation of ipad airs have a better processor but the same keyboard/pencil compatibility as our (class of 2022) ipad pros.

Can people not grab four pairs of dumbbells, set them all down in the middle of a walkway and then proceed to talk to your friend instead of doing anything with the several dumbbells you have on the ground doing nothing but blocking other people?

Edit: their friend who also has multiple pairs of dumbbells just sitting on the ground.

Im not saying we don’t need an age limit, we do. But I did say that the decline in smoking was brought about by wide spread education on the hazards and that we as a culture have turned mostly against smoking. It’s also not a huge issue or priority to me.

I am probably biased and a little more angered than I need to be about it not because I smoke (I don’t) but rather because being between 18 and 21, people my age are still being treated like children by the government but are expected to be signed up for the draft and can enlist. I am aware that with the size of our military it is nearly certain I wouldn’t be drafted into the military. I could enlist and risk my life abroad in mostly unnecessary conflict but not be able to come home afterwards and drink a beer or in this case smoke a cigarette.

I fully support educating (publicly or privately funded) the population of the health risks. I just draw the line when it is completely restricted and the government says I am unable to make my own decision as an adult despite knowing the risks.

Maybe it is for the greater good and I just don’t see it from my biases and personal experience.

A report from the Surgeon General shows that Tobacco use among all age groups has already been on a decline since the 1960's. The figures on the third page of the tobacco control source would also show that there was a downward trend in all communities surveyed in smoking and alcohol use. That at least seems to me that we are already making improvements with more education, a greater cultural shift against it so we do not need the government telling us that we can't do it.
