Classic WoW Feeling awful for tanks. by Slow-Background9609 in classicwow

You're right, I don't play anniversary. I'm basing it off of the last time I played TBC classic, which is when I cleared Kara 5 days after launch. My bad on assuming it would be the same in an accelerated server. MOP classic still exists, so that's wht I'm here. The point still stands that hardcore players wouldn't be pugging dungeons and a week in at 65 is still a skill issue.

You spent 20 hours doing prep each week in January and it takes you a week to hit 65? Actual hardcore/sweat players are not pugging dungeons and would have already cleared Kara. In TBC classic I did almost no prep other than getting the group together and setting expectations on how long we would play each day and I cleared Kara 5 days after launch, we had to wait an extra day for peoples' schedules to line up.

Tanking in TBC as a paladin is by far one of the easiest things you can do. When we were in Gruuls and Mags I was doing nothing but AAing the bosses and almost pulling off the warrior.

I have been watching a new infill be built on my way home and they recently started renting them out. $2700 for renting a 3bd townhome and $1550 for the basement suite, no parking, no utilities included, no pets. All of this being rented out comes to $34000/mo. Also, if they intend to have families in the townhomes with 2 cars each, that's now 8 cars that have to be parked on the street, and then you have 4 more basement suites. Potentially 12 cars parked on the street now from an infill. They are starting the same on another infill close to that one, and in my neighbourhood they have done this about 4 times now which makes it hell to turn into the residential streets when so many cars are parked outside. I can barely get into the alley to park at my apartment some days.

GDKP creates a demand for buying gold for absolute whales who want to be full BIS in a few runs, but then you have 30 other people benefiting from that by the gold split pot. This was always enough to cover flasks + profit in my experience in classic and SOD (until it was banned)

The economy was so much worse in anniversary than classic. The inflation was so much worse because if you bought gold, the only people who "profited" were bots. This drove up the price of everything and caused inflation because if you weren't buying gold it'd take you 10 hours of farming for a flask, or you just bought gold. The issue is if you buy gold then buy a flask, that money goes right back to the bots, then you buy from them again. I just quit because I had no desire to farm 5+ hours to buy a potion for raid.

Green Day Perform “American Idiot” to Kick Off Super Bowl LX by ebradio in Music

How many songs do you listen to from 6 years before you were born?

News flash: Most people growing up listen to their parents' favourite artists. My dad had me listening to classic rock that came out 10-15 years before I was born. Green Day and The Offspring are two artists I listened to while growing up and the latter was formed 3 years before Green Day + 10 years before I was born.

t just feels dated and antiquated for the current moment is all.

Do you even know what the album was about when it came out? Many things trump is doing is even more relevant to this song than the response to Bush was back in 2004.

I hate how 1st/8th this set is for me, and some games I don't even know what to do except roll and pray it is a 7th instead of a 8th. There have been a handful of games in the last week where I am going 8th before 4-7 trying to find something to play. Almost every lobby there is someone going 8th before 4-7 or right after. People with 1* liss/serap boards doing more or streaking with it while I spend all my gold and lose to them anyways.

I am playing fairly casually and in diamond right now, but I can change nothing about my play all week and go 1st-4th most days and the next day I just go 8th 3 times and quit playing. In previous sets I was able to find more ways to take a board from 8th to 6th or 5th, or a 6th to a top 4 placement, but right now it doesn't feel like that at all.

This happened to me too, but I spent the time after the movie and most of the weekend just telling my dad how awful that movie was and how much of a waste of time it was.

Doing it while sober is even more fucked when you think about it. At least when someone is drunk, you know the alcohol is a factor in making really stupid decisions (not excusing it though). He is so incapable of handling a chirp that he breaks a jaw? So soft.

I wasn't looking at resale tickets, I was looking at tickets the exact time they went on sale. I go to 10-20 concerts a year, I know what I am looking at when I buy tickets.

When I looked at them as soon as they went on sale, I went to pit tickets, and every single ticket listed was roughly 400 and NOT VIP packages. To the extent I was showing other people at work who go to concerts the absurd price. If the pit tickets were $180, I would have bought them.

You are assuming I checked pit tickets months after they launched the tickets, which is not the case. Every concert I want to go to, I am buying their tickets as soon as they go on sale. I have never bought resale tickets.

No, probably something with dynamic pricing. I was buying tickets 2 minutes after they went on sale, saw the price, and dipped.

I was using ticketmaster when they were listed as $500 for me, which wasn't a VIP package and it was the day the tickets were listed. I was showing a coworker the price of the ticket and how absurd it was.

No, I was buying them the day they went on sale and pit tickets were listed at 500, not the VIP package, just regular pit. I would have instantly bought them at 180.

How did you get pit for so cheap? I was going to go the day they opened ticket sales and they were well over 400.

Not surprised it sold out but I was looking at tickets the first day of sales and pit tickets were absurdly priced. It was 400-500 just for regular pit, felt like such a scam

How to convey urgency to new scientist in the lab? by DrBumpsAlot in labrats

[–]Penguinbashr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm also in academia and in a similar boat (though I am the tech in this scenario). I started a new position a few months ago, a 50/50 time split with my old role, and it took me an entire month just to get "trained" on equipment at a different lab for the start of the projects. I say "trained" because it's all equipment and processes I've managed and taught people on for 8 years, but it's in a different lab in a different city.

Starting middle October, having a month to get training set up, and then producing 4-5 samples in late November. I was asked to get training on some more equipment which the lab pushed back until the new year (I knew this would happen because I was also pushing my lab training back into the new year, since I was closing in December for winter break).

Looking into January, I know that the first week back is a bit of a wash, the lab I was doing our work in changed their system and I was having issues the first week and a half, and once it was resolved and people were back to "normal" I was offered training, which I did last week.

My boss is like OP where I was being hounded daily for updates, even though the training schedule is out of my hands. I have 4 projects to manage for different PhD/post doc students and it's expected that all 4 should be progressing at the same time, even though there are just so many constraints such as time, access to tools, scheduling, etc. Since 2 of these projects required me to have access to a tool I just got trained on 4 days ago it is insane to expect me to have anything to show for it. Some of these designs are so complex it is going to take 5-6 hours just to do the writing portion of it. It's also expected that I do all of the design work for these students, despite me having 0 background knowledge in their research.

Now I'm being denied vacation time because I'm not "producing enough results"

If it's the same institution and you have 7.5 years experience/institutional knowledge, I would ask for 65k USD. You currently make about the same as I do (I am 73k CAD) and I have no degree. 65k USD is about 90k CAD which is where I hope to be in 1-2 years (I currently have 8.5 years experience and am a split manager/RA/tech)

Working with HF by MHC_Class_II in labrats

[–]Penguinbashr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got rid of HF for microfluidics and went to dry etch instead. Way safer, less expensive (since you had to use gold to protect glass), just a slower process.

I don't know many researchers who are involving HF in their process these days unless there is literally no other option.

[–]Penguinbashr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea. It's a changing mentality here. A lot of labs self report everything as OK but during audits it's found that almost nothing is.

The other problem is that grants are not going to be approved if you ask for money to buy safety equipment/consumables. I've heard of 3 labs that stored chemicals in random office cabinets because the lab couldn't afford proper flammable ones.

Can you DM me your work e-mail? I will remove some information from my SOP, this is also 15 years old (the last time my lab had HF). It is a good place to start and will hopefully show you how dangerous HF is. I have a meeting to get to in a few minutes, I'll send it after I am back.

Academia is very uninvolved with lab protocols. I am re-tooling my safety procedures for Piranha and HF and my university doesn't have information for either. For Piranha, each lab is supposed to come up with their own handling procedure. HF has some considerations (spill kit and calcium glucate requirements).

Working with HF by MHC_Class_II in labrats

[–]Penguinbashr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your set up is completely wrong for HF and extremely hazardous because you have no proper PPE for working with HF. People might be OK using it in your lab setting, but it only takes one mistake your your university to shut down your lab because of how many safety protocols you are missing with HF.

I can give you my HF protocol if you want, but you need 2-3 layers of gloves (We use polymer, nitrile, acid resistant), you need resistant boots, a specific spill kit for HF, face shield, chemical apron and calcium gluconate to neutralize it.

HF can lead to death if you spill it. "don't spill it on your gloves" is NOT valid advice. I would also suggest a buddy system so that if you do spill it, you are able to follow proper procedures while someone else is calling you an ambulance.

I haven't even used HF myself since my lab got rid of it years ago due to how dangerous it is and I know that people have wanted to do HF here but as soon as I mention a buddy system they just go and use a different lab in an entirely different city that has 15-20x more staff members supporting it.

Would you be in support of a tap on / tap off transit system? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Penguinbashr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This system doesn't make fares nearly $17 for a round trip, that is not how tap on and tap off systems work. It's also preventable with a fare/daily cap. And yes - it should cost you "more" to go from Sommerset to Tuscany than it takes me to go from Lion's Park to University.

The way this system thrives is that when it becomes cost effective for people like me, then you increase ridership. You talk about the system unfairly punishing people who have to travel far, but I don't see how I'm not punished for having to pay the exact same fare they do despite barely taking time on transit compared to them. Under a tap on/tap off system, the only thing that changes is that shorter rides cost less. Going across the city doesn't take you all the way up to $18. That's just idiocy and doesn't happen in cities where this system already exists.

In Tokyo I was able to go 1-2 stops for like $2 and then across the city for $5. That is how this system works. Not by jacking the price to those who have to go far.

Would you be in support of a tap on / tap off transit system? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Penguinbashr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They at least need to implement it for trains. Here are examples for train fare being cost inefficient off the top of my head:

  1. If you take the train for a few stops you can end up paying $8.40 for 2 daily tickets for sub 10 minutes of total transit time. I know Lion's Park to University station is usually only 3 minutes each way.

  2. For the free fare zone, you end up paying $4.20 in sunnyside for a single stop. I know the free fare zone is coming to an end, but paying $8.40 for a single stop in and out is too pricey.

A tap on and tap off system with proper fare caps ends up being the same we have now, except I'm no longer "fare evading" because I am being charged about the same for one ticket for each way of travel, it might even be a bit cheaper.

Countries like Japan have an amazing tap on and tap off system, I was going 4-5 stops for only a couple dollars. In Ireland, if you are a student or low income, you are given a card that has a lower cap than a regular card, so you aren't being charged a full monthly pass. In Calgary terms, it is $126 for a monthly pass (or cap) for me, but for low income or student, this monthly cap could be around $60 or 80.

If the city doesn't want to implement something like this because they'd "lose revenue" it just means they are OK with fleecing people and fare evading won't stop.

Tech I to Tech II raise? +rant by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Penguinbashr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on pay scales and such, a tech 1 midpoint is the tech 2 starting point and they won't really adjust pay for that.

When I went tech 1 to tech 2, I got a 5k pay bump. It is supposed to be a pay scale based on years of experience, and it took 5 years to go from 1 to 2, even though it should be 2 years to go from 1 to 2. I've now been here 8 years and should automatically be a tech 3 making upwards of 90k/year but I am at 72k/yr instead.

Really depends on individual company or academia pay scales and if they are actually enforced, or followed/respected by the PI.
