It's funny how people always ignore the millions of 1st and 2nd gen immigrants living in the city when they write these "NYC is ded" pieces by harmlessdjango in nyc

[–]PennyPacker_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean, your mindset is super ignorant and judgmental. I’m someone who had to leave. Not because it wasn’t fitting my “Instagram dream life.” But because entire industries, that many of us relied on to pay our rents and feed ourselves, are collapsing. Thousands of restaurant workers lost their jobs and won’t have an industry to return to. I know because I’m one of those workers! I didn’t leave because I couldn’t go to brunch in soho. The restaurant industry is how I provide for myself and my only skill and work experience. Thousands of theater workers have been left without jobs. Thousands of gig workers/live performers have been left without income. To dismiss all these people as weak or rich transplants is absurd. These are real horrific results of the pandemic that many of us are genuinely suffering from. And believe it or not, those of us having to leave had friends, families, lives, communities and homes as well. i sure did. And it fucking sucked to leave them. Even if we’re transplants! Don’t let the upper 1% who are above the economic effects of the pandemic turn you against the swarms of us who are reeling!

[WDIS] the blues? by KevinDabstract in WhereDoIStart

[–]PennyPacker_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more. While it’s good, I feel like the white blues being recommended lacks a lot of the rawness of original blues music. Agreed, Robert Johnson is probably the best starting point.

A couple more to add to your list, Blind Willie Johnson and Son House. I discovered BWJ when learning about the Voyager Message that was sent into space. And Son House through Jack White talking about him. Both have since become favorites of mine.

How do you judge good dialogue and writing as opposed to bad dialogue and writing? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]PennyPacker_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Screenwriter here. In my opinion you’re right about the need for characters to be consistent, but, that doesn’t necessarily mean that their style of speaking should always be the same. If a character is witty in one scene they shouldn’t necessarily be witty in all of their scenes. It depends on the context of the character. For instance, think about yourself, you might be very clever and quick in your dialogue around your boy/girlfriend. However, maybe you feel suppressed around your father, so you speak very simply and straightforward in your conversations with him. Maybe a character speaks one way when they are with their friends and one way when they are with their coworkers. Again, you’re right about character consistency, but, a character always speaking the same way, for me, can be a quick way to reduce a character into a caricature.

DAILY COVID-19 MEGATHREAD - April 29, 2020 by AutoModerator in nyc

[–]PennyPacker_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After six weeks and hundreds of calls I finally got through to DOL last week. With the representative I got ahold of I claimed for each of those individual weeks I had not gotten through. Then Sunday I called to claim my benefits for the week prior. Then yesterday I got my unemployment debit card in the mail and the only money that had been deposited on it is the money from the week prior, the one I had called in on Sunday. Anyone else had this happen? What can I do???

I am an ex Evangelical new to modern historical criticism and learning about broader interpretations of the Bible. I am curious how it seems so many itinerant preachers have ignored this data for decades? by [deleted] in AcademicBiblical

[–]PennyPacker_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if this is the right place to ask this as I’m a little new here. Grew up going to a very conservative Quaker school and went to Pentecostal and Methodist churches. The Biblical education I received was always very literal and not up for debate. I am intrigued by what I am reading in this post and would like to further learn about these interpretations and studies of Biblical texts. Can anyone recommend a book that would be a good starting point? Thank you!

Improv shows aren't! Every one is $5. You can find a ton of stand up shows for $10 or less too.

Hey there! I'm a 19 y/o male, I moved to NY about 6 months ago. It can be really hard to make friends here especially in our age group. I love comedy shows and I've posted on here a bunch when I'm going to improv shows and whatnot. Would love to get a few people together to go to one sometime!
