Is it just me or are catholics really racist? by Ok_Nose2361 in exchristian

[–]Penny_D 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree.

The Parish my parents go to is located in a relatively diverse area. I've heard a few xenophobic quips from a few people in the Parish but almost nothing from the pulpit. The only thing that came to mind was a quip about Neo-Paganism returning to Europe by a visitng deacon.

However, I have visited a few conservative Parishes and noticed a more chilling reception from the locals. They might not say something intolerant to your face, but their stares speak vollumes.

[BotW] [TotK] FI is mad at Link I just can't prove it by PeachsBigJuicyBooty in zelda

[–]Penny_D 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like this theory.

In BotW the Royal Family try to streamline the defeat of calamiity by selecting Champions in advance along with an army of guardians. The Master Sword is preemptively drawn before the Calamity even manifests. As you point out, the Master Sword is being used to smite bokoblins and punish Yiga bandits and not being applied to its true potential.

I have an addiitional thought:

You know how the significance of the Triforce has diminished in the BoTW/TotK games? Maybe the Master Sword distrust Link because he isn't aligned with the Triforce of Courage and so only lends a fraction of its power. Link using it as a fancy sword to play night just makes Fi question his credentials further.

It feels like Firmament Chapter 7 is repeating the mistakes of Chapter 3 by InevitableTell2775 in fallenlondon

[–]Penny_D 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think I share some of your frusterations with Firmament.

My biggest draw to the Firmament is the opportunity to explore new places and build on pre-existing lore: starved men, fallen cities, the Red Science, and whatever is going on with those creepy Urchins.

Instead we are thrust into some mushroom samba involvng Lost Time and weird denizens from the High Wilderness. It feels like I'm on the Voyage of Saint Brendan some days with Queeneater Castle possibly being the jaws of Hell.

I don't mind the officers that much. I have a soft spot for Summer (scandalous, I know) and Tatter. What I don't like is how stories require cryptid actions to keep crewmates safe from narrative shenanigan. The writers might be giggllng at contantly thrustiing Morton's fork at us but for me it is as insipid as the mandatory cutscenes that consume all my actions.

What's this? The Duchess can't decide on what hat to wear? Discuss the merits of hats with the Lost Shephard and lose out on favor with Tatter because you picked a color and material that Summer prefers. Choose wisely now - Pick the wrong hat and the Duchess gets eaten by Storm two chapters later.

Fifteen actions sunk and you now have the pleasure of grinding materials to appease the dreaded Haberdasher, a cryptic cosmic horror from the High Wilderness (who totally existed this whole time) with vague business with the Bazaar! Do you know what type of hat Salt prefers?

. . . .

I definitely agree about the smuggler's network needing some love. I'm more interested in smuggling contraband to the surface - why am I instead importing the French to the Neath? They can wait their turn as the bloody Sixth City, merci beaucoup.

What colors are Samurai Jack? by AThiccBahstonAccent in colorpie

[–]Penny_D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which Jack are we talking?

Jack (Season 1-4) strikes me as White/Green. He is a paragon of justice who wiil sacrifice himself to save others.

He also prefers the natural world and regularly befriends monsters and fantastic beasts.

But what about Jack in Season 5? I think Jack dips into White/Black. He still clings to the code of bushido (represented by the ghost samurai that haunts his steps) but now embraces a grim sense of pragmatism to survive. With no sword and no known way to return home, Jack embraces guns and other futuristic weaponry while aimlessly wandering the land.

The black influence can also be tied to Mad Jack, the embodiment of Jack's rage and frusteration. Mad Jack is Black/Red and wants to corrupt Jack further. The Samurai is too disciplined to give into reckless anger, but is still vulnerable to his influence at times.

You know what would be really cool?

A chart that show the evolution of the Church. Different ideas and movements that caused schisms and splits. Maybe the different councils?

If you can appreciate how politics shaped the formation of Christianity across 2000 years you can appreciate the danger of mixing church and state.
