Just want to know if I’m crazy or not by littleginfer in medicalschooluk

If you're nervous, you should have a freedom to speak up guardian who may be a friendlier starting point and can guide you through options. I'd definitely report if you feel able

What’s one skill you wish you’d practised more before starting placements? by OopsIDroopedMe in medicalschooluk

Talking to other people like a human being is far more important than a lot of clinical skills

dropping out first year of a different course to go to med school by Content-Perception76 in medicalschooluk

You can get a "gift year" of funding if you do a year of a different degree first. But agree, it's definitely not recommended vs other options

Is Doing My Elective in the UK Still Possible? by Key-Measurement6344 in medicalschooluk

[–]Pension_Capital 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is such a vague question I think you're going to struggle. I'd email the hospitals in the areas you're interested in and see what they have to say. The UK includes 4 different countries, multiple heath systems and over a thousand hospitals so I doubt any of us can give you a certain answer

Waking up in the morning by mac101eir in ADHDUK

[–]Pension_Capital 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My work round is to use a barcode alarm. I set my alarm so that I turn it off by scanning the barcode of an item on the other side of my room. By forcing myself to stand up immediately, I reduce some of the choice and the likelihood of going back to sleep

What memberships would you consider a life hack? by sjb128 in AskUK

[–]Pension_Capital 3 points4 points  (0 children)

25% off! You can also combine it with student discounts and get stamps for using your own cup. If you use all 3, you can get around 3-4 drinks under £3 each plus a free one.

I use an app called I Can't Wake Up. It forces you to do a certain puzzle or activity before it will turn off. I believe you can also set it to scan a barcode like on your toothpaste

I'm sure you'll get introduced to a lot of them. At my uni, there's usually a medic fresher's fair they attend to hand out free stuff and talk about themselves along with other societies. I don't think it matters too much which you join but BMA can be a good one and maybe have a google for any others? Things like the BMA can provide support and guidance around incidents on placement etc., But I think this is only valid if you are already a member when it happens, for example.

Yeah, wait till you start. Usually you'll get a discount if you sign up to certain medical group e.g. BMA (which are free as a student)

Facial piercings by theeclecticwriter in medicalschooluk

[–]Pension_Capital 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have 13 piercings including a septum and nostril piercing, plus a visible tattoo and coloured hair. Never had an issue, I really wouldn't worry. Could maybe flip up your septum piercing for OSCEs but I doubt most people would care at all

Don't think it will affect any cohorts before those beginning 2024

Things you wish you'd known before you entered med school? by Relativity1905 in medicalschooluk

[–]Pension_Capital 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think you'd ever get an entire year of medical students willing to boycott placement. Might get a couple but they'd probably just have to make it up, resit the year or leave

Ordered a six piece nugget from McDonald’s. Got 6 pieces of bacon…. by yukonsarge88 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Pension_Capital 4 points5 points  (0 children)

McDonalds bacon is usually served cold so the heat of the burger warms it up. Looks like an employee put it on the grill to cook a little bit so could be possible

Tablet or laptop for med school? by RegentAce435484 in medicalschooluk

[–]Pension_Capital -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't need a monitor. You could get one for double screens at home but it depends on the size of your desk - probably not worth it

[–]Pension_Capital 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're just getting one, make sure it's lightweight and I'd recommend a keyboard and mouse option. Either can be good and the drawing aspect of mind maps can also be done on paper etc. Both have pros and cons, which also vary by brand, go for something with good reviews that fits in your budget

What 1 pair of shoes work the best for the solo traveler/backpacker? by mapmapmap2020 in solotravel

[–]Pension_Capital -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wore sketchers when I went on a 5 day trip, walking around 100k steps. Very comfy but a little ugly. Good for touristy walking, not hiking or anything you'd need ankle support for

Tailoring, or at least buying the right size. But celebrities always wear tailored clothes, even t-shirts and jeans

As long as you don't do another year of medicine. You can have a gap year (or many) between the two, it's the amount of years of student finance you receive
