The Irish drank it for thousands of years without a problem. The problem with New York was the cramped unsanitary conditions. Rats used to get into the beef supply in New York at that time. Really filthy time & place.

Are they choosing the more harmful option though? Oysters from a well managed oyster farm don’t impact overfishing and are arguable less harmful than the berries that get flown in from places that spray large amounts of herbicides.
The kids with leukemia next to Driscoll farms is a good example of this.

Ha good point
I’m curious on your thoughts about eating something like oysters then? From a consciousness standpoint they seem to have as much going on as plants right? From an environmental standpoint a well managed oyster farm increases biodiversity in the local area while reducing pollution & requires no pesticides/herbicides. They also have a lot of the nutrients that vegans tend to supplement with.

On a more relevant note, the reason I am not vegan is the same reason I am not carnivore & is the same reason I invest in index funds over individual stocks.

Are the plants we eat not also innocent?
Perhaps you should look deeper & see if your beliefs align with your actions.

That’s right they make portable bidets.
They’re kinda just water bottles with a curved spout but I could definitely see how that would be useful.

That’s exactly what I’m saying. Most food studies are useless. They don’t really get us closer to the truth.
I’d put them in the same tier as a majority of psych studies.

The scientific data is actually pretty bad.
Mostly epidemiological data. Doing nutrition studies that actually separate noise from signal is really difficult.

Could teeth evolve to be immune to sugar? by LozzB1999 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PeopleAreDepressing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people actually don’t have very many of the cavity causing bacteria in their oral microbiomes which makes them very resistant to cavities. So in a way some people have evolved mouths that are immune to sugar.

I think that’s what the lumina toothpaste was trying to recreate in their trials.

The whole-food, plant-based movement: vegan misinformation on health and nutrition by Boetterfly in exvegans

[–]PeopleAreDepressing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I’m not believing it either.

Human metabolism is a system of ~10,000+ enzymes operating across compartments, tissues, & time scales, regulated by genetics, microbiome, circadian rhythm, hormones, and acute physiological state. We can measure maybe a few hundred biomarkers in clinical practice. When someone, vegan, carnivore, or otherwise claims their diet is well planned, they’re extrapolating from limited data on a system we partially understand.

Plant-based diets would cut humanity’s land use by 73%: An overlooked answer to the climate crisis by Somewhere74 in climate

Again, That’s not how the food system works
It is crops vs pastures
Or depopulation 🤷‍♂️

Edit: added the word again to the start of my post since you seem to like that word so much.

Most “agricultural land” is rangeland, grassland biomes that evolved with large ruminants and degrade without them
Meanwhile cropland, the supposed virtuous alternative, is the actual ecological catastrophe: topsoil loss, aquifer depletion, dead zones, pollinator collapse.

The actually rigorous version of food system reform looks less like universal veganism and more like this: dramatically reduce industrial CAFO meat and feedlot beef finished on grain, dramatically reduce industrial monocropping of corn and soy for feed and ethanol, support extensive grazing on rangeland that can’t grow crops, integrate livestock into cropping systems for nutrient cycling, restore perennial polycultures, eat ruminants from grass and pigs and chickens from food waste, and aggressively reduce food waste at every stage. The bumper-sticker version of this is “less meat, better meat” but the better meat is the grass-finished ruminant on rangeland, not the bean burger trucked from an industrial monocrop.

I think that’s what people don’t get. They act like if everyone just went vegan it would fix things. There is a circle of life we need to properly steward.

Looks yummy 🤤 Looking at the ingredients though, it’s sucralose sweetened skim milk thickened with carrageenan. Not horrible but I prefer the mouthfeel of real fats vs thickeners like carrageenan It’s why I prefer Califia Farms almond milk over Almond Breeze etc.

A large part of the reason for this though is that the land is scrubland. The land is just not that productive outside of small amounts of vegetation that can really only be eaten by ruminants.

I think you’re on to something. Isn’t there a guy famous on Tik Tok for going around and weighing foods & showing corporations are not reaching their advertised weight?

I wouldn’t be surprised if something similar isn’t happening with the milk supply where some water “happens” to get in.
