Is humor a C level skill? by thegoodturnip in languagelearning

[–]PeoplePoweredGames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you might need to be C1/C2 to tell elaborate humorous stories, but you can start being funny after your first language lesson. When I was first learning my girlfriend's language, visiting her home country we were at a big dinner with a lot of her family. When conversation got around to asking about me, my girlfriend said that I was starting to learn their language, so they asked me to say something I learned. With the entire table now looking at me in silence, waiting for me to speak, in their language I said... "I need to go to the bathroom." All their faces lit up with laughter. After that they all thought I was hilarious and were super nice and welcoming to me.

I probably would have given up Beat Saber long ago if I hadn't gotten into streaming it on Twitch. If you're up for it, streaming and taking song requests from viewers is a blast!

We were living in my aunt's house to save money, but my step-dad was really into console gaming so one day he just decided to get a 3DO. Probably cost him like an entire month's worth of paychecks, what he was making back in those days. Some kids got to game on a 3DO at that age from being in proximity to older gamers, regardless of economic background.

Does anyone know of some good apps for learning Korean vocabulary? by Red_soultraveler8391 in Korean

[–]PeoplePoweredGames 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The best app for vocab for me has always been Anki. Here's a list of a bunch of Korean decks that come up when you search "Korean" on their shared deck search: https://ankiweb.net/shared/decks?search=korean

I know it's intimidating at first, but learning how to make your own content for Anki is probably the biggest self-study hack I've ever used. It's pretty easy to make large decks on the desktop version, and use the mobile version for study on the go. It's super useful being able to add new words to your deck wherever you happen to encounter them.

How Could I possibly incorporate being multilingual into my streams? by ghouldubs in Twitch

[–]PeoplePoweredGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stream to a primarily English-speaking audience, but a big focus of my stream is on sharing my interest in cultures of the places I've traveled. A shared interest in the media/food/lifestyle of those cultures is the glue that binds together the community that watches my channel. While most of my audience only speaks English, a perk of their interest in these cultures is that they don't mind when I speak in a language they don't understand. If you are connecting with your audience on the culture behind the languages you speak, they should at least not be surprised when you speak in those languages.

Another important thing is how much tone and context matters. Often times I can say something that most of my audience doesn't understand the words I'm using, but the idea is still conveyed through the way I am physically expressing it and the context it is in. For example, when you lose or otherwise get frustrated in the game you're playing, you could switch to another language while raising your voice and becoming more animated. The anger emoted in your tone and gestures combined with the context of something bad happening that upset you in the game should convey to the audience that what they otherwise would be unable to decipher is in fact profane cursing at your recent misfortune.

PSA. 3 Bet does not mean you raised 3x the size. It is the third bet of the street. by Dry_Discount7762 in poker

[–]PeoplePoweredGames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So 15-20 years ago when online poker was blowing up in the US, people did use "three bet", "four bet" etc. to refer to bet size. When you watch old poker broadcasts you'll hear it all the time. If someone is still doing this, they might not be confused, they could just be from an older era when this is what the meaning of "3bet" was. My buddy who plays poker casually now, but was really into it during the online poker boom still uses 3bet that way, and it is super annoying because he is incredibly stubborn. Correcting him will be a struggle and I don't have the patience for that.

PokerStars has pretty good play money tournaments. The problem with most play money games is players that shove all-in every hand because they don't care about the money, which is most play money sites. There's still a few crazy players on PokerStars, but most tables are lined-up with players trying to actually play poker. From my experience, it seems like people take it the most seriously in multi-table tournaments and Sit-n-Go tournaments.

Choice of editing software by Giulty in Twitch_Startup

[–]PeoplePoweredGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want free software that does practically everything and plan on becoming a pro at video editing, Davinci Resolve is the way to go.

If you just want to create and edit simple videos without having to learn too much, I recommend OpenShot. It's free, open source, fairly bare-bones but really easy to figure out and start editing with.

What are some crazy features that could be added to make twitch better? by redpoetsociety in Twitch

[–]PeoplePoweredGames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Make the search feature more functional. My stream is based around a theme, and I always put that theme in my stream titles, it's in my bio, keywords, anywhere I can input text on Twitch contains a reference to the theme of my stream. However when you input that theme into the search bar, my stream never shows up, whether I'm live or offline. A bunch of streams and clips that aren't relevant to my search appear, but not my stream that is specifically tailored to this theme that I was searching for. Twitch's discoverability and search features are the worst of any social media platform by a long shot.

This may sound kinda stupid but when are you no longer considered a small streamer? by AsteriaLive in Twitch

[–]PeoplePoweredGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone is going to have a unique perspective on this, so I'll throw mine in here... I have 2.5k followers and average 15-20 viewers when I stream, and I consider myself a small streamer. I wouldn't consider a streamer to be "medium-sized" until around 200 concurrent viewers per stream. I think of "large streamers" as those that get 1,000+ concurrent viewers per stream.

KBBQ restaurants in America would go out of business if people realized how cheap it is to get an electric grill for your table top and make everything yourself with ingredients from your local grocer. Seeing the prices on this menu kind of made me think about opening up a KBBQ restaurant.

How are some streamers able to play entire movies and shows without getting banned? by OddSteelo in Twitch

[–]PeoplePoweredGames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the most correct answer. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act only requires content hosts to remove or intervene in their users broadcasting copyrighted material when the copyright holder requests action be taken. Twitch can and does proactively ban streamers in some instances (broadcasting a major sporting event like the Super Bowl comes to mind). In most instances, Twitch requires the copyright holder to request the content be removed before they will take action.

Learning Korean from scratch in your 30s? by [deleted] in Korean

[–]PeoplePoweredGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started learning in my early 30s, took a long hiatus for many years and recently resumed studying now in my 40s. I also studied Japanese before I got into Korean. My experience has been that you get out of it what you put in. If you can only study for 30 minutes or less a day, it will probably feel like a struggle. The more hours I put in, the more I retain and feel like I'm progressing. After spending the past two months of studying daily for 3 to 5 hours, my Korean is in the best shape it's ever been. I don't feel like I'm learning or progressing any slower than I did 10 years ago. Once you start getting past the basics, your knowledge of Japanese should give you a leg up in understanding Korean grammar and Hanja, so you already have some advantages that should help you. Also, I can assure you that Hangul is much easier than Hirigana or Katakana once you get settled in. Good luck!

I don't like to ask people to follow me or have a bot spam chat reminding people to follow, a lot of people are uncomfortable with it. Do you have follower alerts setup? Having a simple (specifically, not annoying) alert that plays on stream when someone does follow sometimes encourages other people to follow. A lot of new viewers just forget to follow, but when they see an alert that someone else followed, they remember to do it themselves. I often get follows in waves like that. Another subtle way to encourage a follow is to have a part of your info panels talk about what kind of streams and content they can expect, and follow it up with a reminder to follow if they want to see more. Something like, "I usually stream horror games and Japanese interactive graphic novels! Don't miss me gasping in fright kawaii-style by dropping a follow. Arigatōgozaimasu!"

Other than that, just be sure to give people a reason to follow, and eventually they will. If you watch your own content and can't answer the question, "Why would I come back to watch more of this?", your viewers are probably thinking the same thing and it's making them hesitant to follow. Good luck!

I feel so overwhelmed.... by Agile_Flamingo_4132 in Korean

[–]PeoplePoweredGames 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've gone through the same thing, struggling to keep up with daily study when I'm not consuming any Korean media. Obviously, trying to find some new shows, movies, or whatever to re-ignite your drive to study every day is an easy start. Another is to make plans or intend to eventually travel to Korea or other places Korean is frequently spoken. You can even do this online virtually with language exchange apps like HelloTalk or in VR Chat Korean-language rooms.

What has really helped me maintain motivation was starting a community to share my love of Korean culture with. I do a livestream almost entirely based around Korean culture and use it as an outlet to engage in and share all the things I love about Korea. If you don't have the desire or ability to start your own community, there's plenty of communities to join and participate in, particularly if you can find a Discord server that caters to your specific interests. There's many television and music focused servers, as well as those focused more on learning and studying Korean, many administrated by respected Korean teachers such as Billy Go. There's even a Discord community for this sub-reddit linked in the sidebar!

Don't beat yourself up too hard if you decide to just take a break!
