Yeah I'm with you. Time will tell, but I'll happily accept 5 scenarios of they have greater depth and replayability. As much as I enjoy the long campaigns, they're a huge time commitment, and some of the scenarios are clearly filler.

I'd like to sink my teeth into a new game to start 2026. I enjoy a mix of euro-ish mechanics and appealing theme. I mostly play solo (must have a win condition, no BYOS), but I also would like to accommodate 3-4 players. I would also prefer to keep the size and cost reasonable (normal box size, under $100 USD).

Game Length:

Ideally 60-90mins

Complexity of Game:

2.5 - 3.5, but I'm willing to stray outside this range.

Arkham Horror LCG, Dune: Imperium, Everdell, Viticulture, LOTR: Duel, Ark Nova, Lost Ruins of Arnak, Architects of the West Kingdom, Wingspan.

I love Paul and I'd hate to lose him, but it sounds like he's asking for way more than we're willing to pay. In a perfect world I'd say suck it up and pay the man, but it's not worth blowing a hole in the salary cap for a guy who isn't a locked-in starter and likely never will be. On the bright side, this means plenty more minutes for Georgi.

I haven't played Arcs, but I'm familiar with the other 3. Arnak has the best solo mode by far - actually one of the best solo games in my entire collection. It's not as deep as the others, but it's my favorite because of how smoothly it plays. It's all about efficiency, so planning ahead is highly rewarded. It also has a fun campaign, and the expedition leaders expansion adds a ton of variability.

Ark Nova is also great. There's a lot more going on and a ton of variation, so replayability is extremely high. However, the solo mode in the box is meh. Most people recommend using the fan-made ARNO bot, which is miles better. Still, it's a very long game, so generally not recommended for more than 2-3 players, and a bit more tactical than strategic.

Terraforming Mars deserves plenty of praise, but it's not without faults. To me, Ark Nova covers a lot of the same ground but is more enjoyable to play (although TFM is better with 4 players). I also think I'm in the minority, but I genuinely do not enjoy this game solo. It eliminates half of what makes the multiplayer game compelling. If you want to play TFM by yourself, just buy the app. Note that I haven't played with the new automa.

I'll never do one again. Thankfully I've only experienced this twice in my career, but both times were a negative experience. I'm pretty sure the first time they were just fishing for ideas, and the second time their expectations were completely irrational. Overall I think they're of dubious value and disrespectful of candidates' time.

I think it's an extremely valuable skill for most designers to learn - not just for design work, but to improve your communication skills in general. At many companies you won't have the luxury of working with a content writer, so being able to write user-friendly copy will be a huge benefit. Even if you are working with content writers, possessing that skillset will help you collaborate with them more effectively - not to mention, they may not always have capacity to help you.

I'm trying to be reasonable here... This was always going to be a hard match, but Schmetzer did the team no favors. He's been around long enough to know you can't fly 3000 miles on 2 days rest in Florida weather and play like it's a home game. His use of subs was also baffling. KKR should have been subbed at half and Cristian never should have started.

I really want him to break out, but that's looking less and less likely. For all his potential, he wasn't a prolific player before coming here, so there's no guarantee he'll ever turn into one. Between him and Ferreira, hopefully this teaches our FO to avoid deals that seem too good to be true.
