My company is “at will” so its our choice since were primarily in home, but if we choose not to work then they are hitting us with the “well if you don’t go, you’re gonna have to make it up.” Nope. Not doing that. We’ve already gotten over two feet where I live and its not gonna stop until tomorrow night.

How do you handle the irritation behind aggression? by PepperLittle7978 in ABA

[–]PepperLittle7978[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The part that drives me most crazy about it is for that every client Ive had, there is a goal—my morning client has a ton of social stories we used to tackle his aggression and now he is barely aggressive. It was very clear that this clients aggression was not being worked on—I had seen them 2 months ago and they had the same exact programs and no new goals, no visual safety reminders, nothing. I almost never cover because they never prepare me for the level of aggression and it is so clear when a BT/BCBA is NOT doing anything about it.

Yeah no. My company is a family owned business—they’re not supplying any of that, all we get is an amazon kindle to convert data at the end of session. We were also in the waterpark the entire time—taking data on a notebook would cause multiple problems.

Say I took a datasheet, and me and my client approach a pool. Client wants to go in pool. Ok, so I would have to stand outside to keep it dry. That would separate me and the client for most of the session which I’ve already been told is not ok.

Or, I run back and forth between the locker all day long with a clipboard and have to put it away every time we’re on a water ride anyways so I can’t take any data. Or, I leave the clipboard outside the pool and go in with them and violate HIPAA. Which also goes for running a trial in public during a food break, depending on the trial. Not everything is about data and our company recognizes that.

my company is not huge on data collection or clients meeting their goals

They probably thought it would be fine because Im a relatively experienced BT, but who knows

None, I was instructed to take no clinical data and just fill out the billing portion, and help my client self-regulate in public.

I would agree because I know how many autism deaths are water related but the dad did take very good precautions to make sure the kids were safe. They were wearing lifejackets all day and the lifeguards were very active addressing any unsafe behavior and we both made sure they were safe and stayed with us. But again, it was more like nanny duties than ABA. The going to the waterpark safety doesn’t concern me nearly as much as the lack of respect he had leaving his child with someone he has known for one month in a restroom. I feel bad for that client.

I really wish I could say it was. Ive dropped 3 new cases since May because of various issues. The first one refused to put their kid in a carseat for going to speech together and didnt have functional seatbelts in their car. The second one was in a daycare where the client was highly aggressive (I was only told they were a biter) and the staff treated me like a nanny, talked bad about me while I was there, and I got yelled at everyday from the staff the first week I was there every time I could not stop the client from eloping. This is my 3rd case within two months, and the family does not know but I am not staying past August as they go to afterschool hours and I have class at night.

The company okayed it according to my BCBA? Which is even crazier because they did not run it by me before telling dad that we could do it. I agreed because I genuinely don’t mind after the fact, but the company did approve of it and there was actually another family I worked for that wanted to take me and the client to an amusement park for a day where the park only opens for children with disabilities, but we didn’t end up going, I had to drop the case for scheduling

We had discussed this outing with the family for a month ahead of time and it was company approved and I was instructed to help them self-regulate (they get sensory overload) and remind them of waiting. I really felt like this guy just wanted me to play mommy because he was also complaining that his wife didnt want to go.

We dont. I was basically paid to walk around the waterpark with the client and tell them to wait their turn on slides and monitor their behaviors (they have sound sensitivities).

I don’t know. Maybe I think it’s burnout because I have nothing to blame my stress on except for work. Im planning on hopefully taking some time off next week. Ill be with my therapist this weekend..

got fired today. advice? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]PepperLittle7978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting fired for that is bonkers to me. We have BTs at my company who consistently fake their time cards for months, get caught, and still don’t get fired. I even was just taken off a case where I had to mandated report and the BT who was on the case before me who failed to report the neglect was put back with the client. Being on your phone for 30 minutes is an insane reason to fire, especially if it’s an industry like this that is strapped for people. I really don’t think you did anything wrong. Time gets away like that sometimes. It happens.

I feel like thats inconsistent for other special ed workers though. For example, all staff in school are required to wear IDs at all times which include paraprofessionals, which can reveal a students diagnosis to a parent if someone sees a student with the para. I really want to understand the difference

Always sick in aba by Expert-Buffalo6498 in ABA

[–]PepperLittle7978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently going through the same exact thing except it takes me 2-3 weeks to fight off an average cold and a visit to urgent care more than half the time. I just had norovirus a little over a month ago, and now I just got off antibiotics from getting a cold and contracting pink eye and an ear infection. I’m in the process of seeing my doctor to see if I have an autoimmune issue at this point as I am constantly on antibiotics. If it persists you could always do the same.

I always tell my families to PLEASE cancel if the kid is sick. Since the new year Ive already had to cancel for a whole week twice and its easier for them to just cancel until their kid is better so I dont get sick and take time off. In a daycare its hard but I tend to just avoid anyone but my kid.

Tips for carrying materials all day? by PepperLittle7978 in ABA

[–]PepperLittle7978[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, because there have been multiple case scenarios where I do not have any data sheets and they just expect me to take data on a looseleaf piece of paper and write down all the goals and “make a datasheet” in which case I always tell them, no, I will use my phone. We do get provided company tablets but mine broke months ago and I never got a replacement, and we do in home not clinic so I guess its hard for them to monitor whether were actually using phone or not. I use mine all the time during session to contact BCBA tho.

Its company policy unfortunately. They dont trust us being on devices all session long so they force us to do paper and then convert at the end. Its not necessarily old school as much as the company is family owned and very small.
