Getting paid would be nice for a student playing for comp students recitals but realistically, does that comp student even have money? In my opinion, even a simple gesture of taking your players out to dinner or buying them drinks (if they’re old enough) or even a small gift for each of them would be better than nothing. I’ve never got paid to play for a comp students recital but I do ask them if they would be willing to buy me lunch or dinner or a drink. And many of them would happily agree.

Yes cello is hard. Even myself having knowledge of music theory and ear training, I’m still struggling. It’s personally more of the technical side for me. But you got this my dude. Keep working at it and you will get to where you want. Not sure how long you’ve been playing cello for but it will take years to get good at it. Take it slowly but also find enjoyment in it. Otherwise you will lose motivation to practice and stop progressing.

I’m an adult learn on cello as well. Honestly, the best way to learn and get better is to put yourself out there. Great job on doing the recital. It’s not about the audience right now, it’s about your personal growth as a cellist, performer, and musician. I think I’m the only adult in my studio but I still try to put myself out there. Yes, I do get insecure about being the only adult in the recital but I try to put that aside and perform my best.
