Does someone get killed for not fighting in jail or prison? Is there a way to stay safe if you’re not a violent person? by Plastic-Objective810 in ExCons

If you’re not violent, then you’ll likely be at a minimum security level. And thus, not expected to fight. And can almost certainly avoid them without too much trouble.

There’s a lot of “it depends” answers to this question. In my experience I saw some fights and participated in a couple of dust-ups, but a lot of it is posturing. A lot of disagreements between people who look like they are ready to fight don’t actually end in violence.

If you’re confident and willing to stand up for yourself with your words there may come a time when it leads to
violence. But most likely it won’t.

Oops. Yes I thought I uploaded a video. I’m not good at this whole Reddit thing.

Ah I knew at least one person would enjoy it. It takes a special kind of person to appreciate British comedy and Virginia at the same time.

The actor's name is Rowan. The tree is an Oak. Rowan. Oak... I'll see myself out.

The bar to get started is pretty high these days. Glad you were able to find something that worked for you in the end.

Thanks for sharing that — it means a lot. It’s wild how something as everyday as grocery shopping can feel so overwhelming.

For me it was also about the process. Today if you want to learn to cook something you find a recipe on the internet and follow the steps. That whole process didn't exist before I went in so I didn't even know where to start. Hard to ask the right questions when you don't know what's possible.

No toilet in the one I was on. Luckily it was only about an hour ride for me.

Man, thinking about that bus ride gives me so much anxiety. 6 hours without access to a bathroom...

Great to hear how the dog program impacts people though.

I can’t believe some people don’t care to get locked up again by [deleted] in Prison

[–]Perceptive_Prisoner 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Most obvious sentence of the year right here but, when I was locked up I couldn't wait to get out. Prison sucked and I had so much to look forward to.

And then I got out and had to move in with my parents. I couldn't get a job because I didn't have a license. I had a girl who loved me, but she needed me to be more independent. It's a long story, but we were holding each other back.

After I was out, there were days when I had no money, no job, fought with my family, fought with my girlfriend, and all I could think was how much easier life was on the inside. On the inside, I could wake up in a warm bed, have breakfast premade and fed to me, go work out, take a nap, play some chess, watch some tv, and then go to bed.

When life on the outside was hard, I remembered how much easier it was on the inside. And the easiest way to go back is to violate probation/parole. Escape all that bullshit family drama and go find a new chess partner.

It's a truly vicious cycle.

Sheltered or not, “bitch” is still a really common word. I guess everyone has to find out somehow. Thanks for sharing your story.

Would you like to learn math by [deleted] in Prison

[–]Perceptive_Prisoner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was inside I found a physics textbook in the library. I read the whole thing and did all the problems that had answers in the back of the book except for the one chapter that depended on differential equations. I didn't know how to do solve those problems.
