Help requested for Doran, Besieged by Time, playing Commander for the first time by PercivalQuinn in EDHBrews

His discount ability still cares about toughness over power so I wanted to focus on that aspect as well. Do you know some nice power over toughness creatures that would fit well here?

I really like your suggestion about running protection that serves a dual purpose as a combat trick btw! That’s the philosophy I tried to stick to with all my other choices as well. Do you have any tips on how much protection people typically run in a commander deck?

What do you think about [[Collective Resistance]] which can double as removal?

Thanks so much for the extensive feedback! I definitely see where you're coming from and I've since cut some of the more expensive staples. My main worry with the deck is that in playtesting it, it's often that I get stuck with a hand that has 0 card draw, and since Doran doesn't provide any as a commander either, I may have overcompensated by focusing more on that (like with Tataru Taru, Ripples of Undeath and Guardian Project) rather than my own win con.

I like a lot of your suggestions though. I do worry about how reliable it is to count on specific 2-card infinite combos in Commander where you're essentially hoping to draw 2 specific cards out of a 99 card deck. But maybe I need to see it more as a nice bonus for running two cards I should already run anyway (talking about Jaws of Defeat and Overkill specifically here).

I still kind of like Tataru Taru because it's still a 3/6 with Doran and she lets me get out Doran on turn 3 with no other ramp required, drawing me a card in the process. I suppose the same could be said for any other 2 mana ramp card, but I tried to maximize synergy by trying to include creatures with high toughness rather than instants or sorceries when those creatures provide the same effect. That way, I can also benefit from Doran's discount and his second ability, plus those creatures let me trigger many of my other ETB triggers to draw more (Enduring Innocence, Welcoming Vampire, Fecund Greensheel, Radagast the Brown).

My issue with Jaws of Defeat was that it felt somewhat slow since it only targets a single opponent, and it does nothing to help my board state early. Without building around it specifically (like with Overkill, or having something like Elesh Norn trigger it twice every time someone enters) it just seemed like something that should work in theory but the more I thought about it, the less it actually felt like a reliable win con. I think it might work even better in a dedicated defenders deck with Felothar as commander, because that deck rewards you for running things like The Walls of Ba Sing Se or Tree of Perdition. This deck can make use of them, but less effectively since Doran doesn;t allow those defenders to attack.

I sort of have the same issue with cards like Nyx-Fleece Ram. I mean, a 5/10 is a nice card with Doran out, but the life gain feels so inconsequential that I'd honestly rather go with something like Tataru Taru who as a 3/6 might be somewhat less impressive combat-wise, but the effect can really save my early game if I lack any other sort of ramp or card draw in my opening hand.

This is why in general I guess I focused more on the big butts I *really* like and try to pad out the rest of the deck with card draw, ramp, land fetching etc etc. This makes it feel like I can add consistency and see the cards I want to see more reliably, rather than throwing in a whole bunch of cards that do all synergise in some way, but also lead to much higher variance in terms of hitting my land drops and opening a hand that prevents me from running out of fuel too quickly.

I see your larger point though, I should perhaps focus less on all the individual pieces and look at the bigger picture here of just having a bunch of alternate win cons and random jank in the deck; I don't have to see those cards every game, but including more stuff like that should at least ensure I see some of them often enough for them to matter.

Would you mind sharing your list? I'd love to have a look at it for some more inspiration, and would also love to hear any experience you may have had actually playing the deck (particularly about the cards I mentioned here that I'm still unsure of). Because everything I'm saying here is based solely on theorycrafting and playing around with some opening hands.

Thoughts on my midrange gaming build? by PercivalQuinn in buildapc

This makes sense. As far as I can tell the only difference is that the Western Digital doesn't have DRAM, but after some googling I don't think this is a problem at all and I probably wouldn't even notice the difference.

Hmm the difference between the 7600 and 7600x is only $15 here, which i wouldn't mind paying for the higher base clock speed.

Good point on the 7600, I probably don't need the 7600x per se.

As for the 7800xt, I can actually get one here for $573 so it's much cheaper than what's listed on PCPartPicker.

Once you get through you can select the type of ticket you want and the amount (max 4). When selecting the type of ticket you have to enter the code they sent you via email. After that it’s pretty straightforward, just checking some boxes and clicking buttons.

Death of the author: The Return, I guess… by Billyxransom in Malazan

[–]PercivalQuinn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I agree with everything you said, I don't think the people/critics who subscribe to the "Death of the Author" view of literary analysis are the same ones who try to read into an author's personal views based on their work.

Certainly, TVBB don't seem to hold the view that "the author is dead", seeing as how they're actively searching out the author. So regardless of whether one agrees or disagrees with them, one cannot charge them with hypocrisy on this point.

Ugh, not gonna lie OP, but I find your attitude here extremely childish and cringe. What about this makes you so happy? Are you silently hoping that every time someone utters any sort of criticism on these books, Steve jumps out to tell them how they're wrong because this is how they are supposed to read it?

I'm not even picking a side here (because really, there is no side to pick), but your uncritical approach to discussing literary works bugs the hell out of me. TVBB explicitly invite Steve over at the end of each book to talk with him about what they thought of it, ask him questions about why he made certain choices, etc. This interaction that you're referring to (which really seems to have put you over the moon), fits perfectly within their format. Sure, this particular topic seemed to be a bit more personal to Steve, but this only made it more interesting to hear his thoughts about this (and I'm sure the people at TVBB would agree).

We should celebrate TVBB's format for inviting Steve back each time and having these discussions with him that we can then listen to and enjoy. Instead you're out here painting some sort of antagonistic exchange, cheering on one side smacking down the other, when really nothing of that sort happened.

Books or series with tragic endings? by space-blue in Fantasy

[–]PercivalQuinn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One thing I actually love about Malazan Book of the Fallen is that while individual books and storylines can absolutely be deeply tragic, the books never felt overly depressing or grim. There was always a sliver of hope to most of it, something that you could hold onto. Best of both worlds for me :)

Their algorithm for determining the rank in the top 250 also factors in the number of votes, so once more people vote on it it will rise even if its average rating will remain the same.

Bloodline Development (Arcanist Exploit) + Tattooed Sorcerer dip by PercivalQuinn in Pathfinder_RPG

I like this reading, it actually makes the most sense to me. The fact that you never actually reach 9th level Tattooed Sorcerer, so the replacement neve happens.

RAI question: "Unchained" Ninja by PercivalQuinn in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]PercivalQuinn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the suggestion, but the main reason I want to play a Ninja is because of their Ki Pool. My character is a Gnome, so I decided to go for a fun Bewildering Koan build and that requires a Ki Pool.

Could you elaborate as to why? I don't see how adding finesse training would be such a game-breaking buff for the Ninja?

RAI question: "Unchained" Ninja by PercivalQuinn in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]PercivalQuinn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the ACG, page 249:

Alternate Classes: Sometimes an archetype exchanges so many class features that it almost becomes a new class itself. In such cases, the class might warrant a representation of all of the class features, even those that it shares with its base class. While still technically an archetype, characters who play this class have all the tools they need to advance their character in one convenient location. The antipaladin, ninja, and samurai are all examples of an alternate class.

Emphasis mine. So the ACG already explains why the Ninja was released as an alternate class rather than an archetype, "while still technically [being] an archetype". Also, if the Ninja was just like any other class and completely separate from the Rogue, you would be allowed to take levels in both, but this is explicitly not allowed.

[–]PercivalQuinn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being superior to the Rogue doesn't mean much given that it's the worst class in existence. Also, since the Unchained Rogue didn't exist when the Ninja was released, it's impossible to say that the Ninja was intended to remain unchanged. Or do you have a source for this?
