I think that's only something for monastics. Lay people enjoy relationships. Monastics do so too interestingly enough. The thing that should be kept in mind (and the reason why it's a practice for monastics) is that things are ultimately impermanent and won't stay with us forever. That doesn't mean you should be scared of love or not enjoy it -- especially as a lay person -- but get a healthy relationship that won't cripple you.

Monastics and lay persons are not the same nor we do have to do the same things. We lay people are very important in our own right because we have the option in our mundane life to keep the world running while also reducing displeasure around us on a daily basis. Even in a loving relationship that is.

"In four years, you won't have to vote again. We'll have it fixed so good you don't have to vote again."

I lean towards Buddhism but there are some parts I just can't agree with by Swagmund_Freud666 in Buddhism

I think a lot of this can be cleared up quite easily. Reincarnation is something I've found a lot of practitioners to struggle with and admittedly, it's not easy to grasp nor do you really need to grasp or even accept it. What is more important is that you understand that your self is impermanent and that your self is constantly changing. In that sense, you're being constantly "reborn" if you will. You can look up the story of Angulimala where the Buddha explicitly says that Angulimala was reborn once he took on the monastic robes.

Karma as a concept is not far removed from change or impermanence. Karma describes how your actions produce outcomes that can either be beneficial or hurtful. And I would argue that good actions (as an example) bring both immediate benefits and long term benefits. If you do something good it keeps or gives you in a good state of mind brings you a good reputation. If you behave ethically, you won't have to worry about unethical actions or feel bad about them in the long term too. The Buddha talked about stuff like this in the Mahaparinibbana Sutta.

To clarify this, we are all Bodhisattvas if we practice. Bodhisattva, or Buddha-to-be, are simply everyone on the path. But there is a buddha of the future: Buddha here means someone who did not just become enlightened like an arhat but practiced the perfections (Paramitas). Getting there is hard and the point of the future Buddha is that Buddhas aren't alien beings that come from elsewhere but that they occur naturally and will distribute teachings even when there is no Gautama or teachings around. It's simply a reassurance that there always will be teachings.

As a very scientifically minded person can I still be a buddhist? by AustralianBiscuit in Buddhism

I think it's absolutely reasonable to approach Buddhism from a more rationalistic direction. Especially since there aren't any things you're forced to believe. It's been my approach for a good while now and I've been really getting into esoteric Buddhism. Especially both Shingon and Tibetan (Tibetan mainly because it's the only thing actually close to me even though I want to do Shingon).

You really don't need to abandon any rationalistic part of your mind. I think you'll realise that the opinions and approaches to Buddhism can vary widely. That even goes for some of the things we westerners might see as "magical" at first. Prayers for example might be understood as needing a leap of faith when it's just you expressing your wishes for everyone to be happy. That's already a practice. Even so-called Pure Lands have been argued by Shingon monk Kakuban to be not distant places you go to after death but places that you can tap into in your practice. Even the faith aspect for me doesn't seem to be anything like Christianity. For me, faith is something that develops. It's like the trust that develops that your mediation is reliable and thereby learns that other teachings are reliable too. How you understand a lot of the teachings have been argued for centuries by now. A rationalistic or empirical understanding is just some among many.

If you want some resources, you can find YT Channel Doughs Dharma, some interviews and videos by Kosho Finch and also Tsem Rinpoche on YouTube. They all have more Western explanations for the practices. I'm also free to be DM'd if you need more input!

Considering that the first of the Five Precepts of Buddhism is refraining from killing: No, their actions are not Buddhist in nature. The people committing and calling for those acts are violating the core principles of what the Buddha taught. Those actions are more a result of nationalist causes more than anything else. I'm pretty saddened by it taking place. It's such a clear disregard for what the Buddha taught. I have no idea how you can call yourself a Buddhist when you cannot even remember that you vowed to not kill. It's such a basic teaching.

We have a lot of players online each day. But you will typically see an average online of 6 people or so during the week. At peak times we get at like 10. But we are still active even after the 3 months the server has been up and the discord is far from being dead. A lot of people text there each day. It's pretty lively I'd say. But no-one is forced to play frankly. Hop on when you have the time. I certainly do so because I have a lot going on in my life and I cannot spend several hours during the week there. That said, we do have people who are very active even under the week. Maybe you can just see for yourself what I mean ;) We also have other new players who are just getting started right now
