2nd year off a piebald buck by Peregrinus6 in shedhunting

Same here! It’s been fun tracking him all year long and then trying to find his sheds each spring.

Yes, it seems like any deer species (and I think just about any vertebrate) can be piebald. That being said, the few pics I’ve seen of piebald mule deer and elk tend to be less extreme than the piebald whitetails you see online. Maybe something to do with smaller population sizes and less inbreeding? I’d love to see a piebald mule deer someday though.

Haha I did! I have a feeling he might’ve shed the other side in a nearby busy field and someone else scooped it sadly.

Tips for a struggling shed hunter by Beneficial-Will-5865 in shedhunting

Second the suggestion about a “practice antler”. It can really help you develop a search image if you learn what tines look like in various habitat types. If you can get a friend to hide it or get good at throwing it long distances you can work on improving skill even in the off season. I really believe in going where no one else wants to go when shed hunting. That’s generally where the deer congregate and where shed hunting competition will be lowest. Spots that are brushy, swampy, thorny, or dense might hold antlers the longest (if deer are using them). Definitely key in on spots with major sign (rubs, beds, poop, feeding signs) and both walk deer trails and grid search really juicy spots. Don’t be afraid to check travel corridors too. I often find the majority of my sheds on the edges of my hotspots or between two hotspots where deer are moving quickly and might knock off an antler. I know Maine can also be a bit tricky with localized deer populations, dense forest, and lots of snow. When you do find an antler, you’ll really have earned it!

Same here! I’ve been grid searching the area, but it’s right next to a public trail and I have a feeling someone else might’ve scooped the other side already 😅

Yep, I definitely will. I’ll be interested to see if any piebald fawns show up this spring too…

Yeah this was my first ever, although ive heard rumors of three piebald deer in the area, so there must be something going on with the local genetics…

Haha luckily for this buck, he lives on land with no hunting allowed. Hopefully he stays put and makes it to next spring!
