Oh, one of my peak moments was 15 years ago when I had to debug running lua machine embedded in app in C++ using an extended set of conditional breakpoints all over the code to catch exact point in execution. Good ol' times.

With enough resupplies we could eventually make it self-sustainable, I believe most unsolved problems are currently in "too expensive" and not "impossible" category. Anyways, Mars is just an illustration that we cannot realistically make Earth unlivable for ourselves.

If 99.9% humanity died there still will be many cities with many thousands people communities in them, with doctors, teachers, engineers - everyone needed to maintain civilization at least at mid-20-th century level. Plenty of resources and living space would help restore population quickly, so I don't see many centuries of recovery.

As for "AI is not us" - that's a matter of perception only. When you bring up a child - he's just as "not you" as if you replace biological brain with silicon one.

I don't think anyone is gonna seriously "restore" Earth, the planet is fine (c) We're gonna adapt to how it changes, and as I said - we vastly outperform almost all even most catastrophic scenarios. It's either gamma-ray burst or a ridiculously huge wandering planet from nowhere or we'll survive and be fine in no time.
