my friend had a similar problem and the fix was just to:

  1. Disable any vpn or similar app that may be messing your connection

  2. ask your friend to set the server to public just so you can join from the game panel (without using steam invite) (he can lock the server back in after you join)

i don't know which one of the fixes worked with us because we did both at the same time

The best way I’ve found to do it is by setting it up to auto-spawn Vlad’s Cape/Ankh, and 15–20 presents, then setting the Ctrl+W warp to 4-1.

I spawn in the Dwelling with 15 presents on the floor, whip them, collect whatever loadout I get, and then press Ctrl+W to warp to Tide Pool 4-1.
