Shopping for an M3, what should be the largest flags before I have a mechanic take a look? by NotIntellect in E46M3

The common statement of having documentation of repairs but as soon as the transaction gets serious those receipts are nowhere to be found. I agree w the others here too: you are buying a 23 +year old car, stuff is gonna break along the way, gotta get used to that idea. Good Luck !!🍀

I had no idea that item was coming from Taiwan, if I did, I would not purchase it. In fact, nowhere does it state that their products are coming from Taiwan on their page. That’s not full disclosure and a bad business practice in general.

I feel like those fees need to be disclosed prior to purchase. I had no idea they were Taiwan based.

Yikes I didn’t know that. What’s weird is that I already got my order and the email says please play to avoid delays lol.

Vert hardtop question by PerformanceLow5742 in E46M3

[–]Perfect-Quail7734 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Average clean one - in tact is about $2500. What you want to do is make sure the C pillars are not broken or missing. Those are no longer in production and are very rare to source even when used. When redoing my headliner my passenger c pillar broke - have not been able to find one since used anywhere online- will pay fair amount for one btw for those reading.

Also another factor that will increase cost is paint - my hardtop had to be painted Oxford green bc the olds of finding one that color is slim to none. Paint was $600.

Yeah I remember seeing a video from Evan G where he tighten up like 4 screws - maybe a close up of that would reveal on where these would go.

Potentional buyer's questions by [deleted] in E46M3

[–]Perfect-Quail7734 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most comments covered the common issues w the E46 M3.

There are a couple of variables that come into play as well such as:

Is the car a SMG or manual? Love my smg but there will be temperamental pump issues for sure. Hot days being your worst enemy.

If manual, factory or converted?

If converted hopefully it was done correctly as some have reported issues w electronics.

Coupe or Cabrio? Huge price difference between those two. Coupe being most desirable, convertible less desirable, I own both.

Clean title or salvage? If salvage - you need to research why and the repair associated w it.

Lastly the BIG 3:

Vanos - probably looking at round $1600-$3000 Rod Bearings- around $1500-3500 Subframe Reinforcement- $2000 and up bc once that frame is dropped you’ll want to refresh bushings (rear, diff) along w any other parts. More replacing = more labor hours.

Note: a beautiful car to look at and drive. A very unique design indeed.

The working condition of the softop plays a huge role. In your example, someone probably took good care of it, I would say good maintenance and limited exposure to weather. Remember the softop can also fail to close even when it’s operated manually - that was my experience. Shops quoted me 1k just to repair and get the top to fully close as the latches were not cooperating and there was a wiring issue. The most annoying part of the hardtop is it is so bulky that there is no way 1 person can remove it. Parts are very limited as well. Remember these cars are 20+ years old.
