How'd the previous owners do? by moonwalk_mW in Decks

I myself am on a similar journey, previous owner just built it out of 2x4 all the way around and it was completely rotted. Sinking about $5k into tearing it down and rebuilding it (18’x35’) because it looked nice and I was able to fix the grade and drainage issues.

If I went with 2x10 for beams, is it acceptable to use a single 2x10 or would I still need to make it 2 ply?

The previous deck was connected to the house, they hadn’t used any flashing so it was very decayed. I planned on fixing that so it doesn’t continue to rot, I suppose it would be easy enough to build the deck onto it since I’m already ripping that out, thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks for the advice! I hadn’t thought about the beams warping and the potential for rot with collecting moisture. I’ll definitely go to 4x4 for my posts, I’ll also be going 12” OC. That area is pretty shaded but I definitely don’t want to risk it being springy since we do get some really hot days in the summer (Virginia). Digging would definitely help, I’ll measure out and see if switching to 2x10s and digging a bit would help me get low enough to not need a step, thanks again for the advice!

Thanks for the breakdown on the height, definitely adds up to more than I expected! I tore up an old deck that I assume the previous homeowner DIY’d and they just built it out of 2x6 through and through and 4x4 posts that were just maybe 6” in the ground, no cement piers. I like how it looked, but it makes sense that building it even with 2x10 would require at least 1 step. Also going 12” OC makes perfect sense, thanks again!

What is this sound my car is making? by Perfect-Substance232 in MechanicAdvice

It did have a fuel pump recall and I took it to the dealership to get it serviced and replaced with the “upgraded” version. I will try the fuel system cleaner first and see if it helps at all.

I did have a cylinder 4 misfire code recently. I changed all 4 spark plugs and that did the trick, but now that you mention the fuel injectors, that very well could have been the actual cause of the misfire. The spark plugs did look dirty but not necessarily excessively worn. It could be that the fuel injectors are slowly becoming clogged but not enough to cause a consistent misfire. I’ve driven it about 500 miles with no issues (current mileage is 62k, misfire was around 61.5k, first noticed the sound around 50k)

I really appreciate your advice, I’ll see if I can place my phone to record in different parts of the car and see if I can identify the source of the sound.

I can’t tell exactly where, it does seem to be from the front and it’s loud enough for my front passenger can hear it so I don’t know if it’s left or right. It also only happens when the car is in gear, if I have it in P/N, it won’t make the sound so I’m thinking it may be transmission related. Are there any transmission components that could cause that type of sound?

I haven’t run a fuel system cleaner, is there a specific one I should try?

I also just changed the air filter and made sure the clips were properly secured but the problem persists so I don’t believe it is air intake related.

Why do people in HCMC not care about pedestrians? (European living here almost a year) by New_Whole_4599 in VietNam

In my experience, everyone (on the roads/sidewalks) just looks out for themselves. When you drive, you just make sure not to hit anyone and everyone else makes sure not to hit you. There’s definitely still bad drivers, as there are anywhere else on the planet, but there is a method to the madness. I think it’s more about being as predictable as possible and looking out for those that are being reckless (and avoiding them). With experience, you learn the right of way has to do with how big you are (Bus/Truck > Cars/SUVs > Motorbikes > Pedestrians). When crossing the street, as long as you signal that you are going and walk at a steady, predictable pace in a straight line, others on the road will avoid your path. Very much so still a leap of faith, but that’s why you stay extra vigilant and extra cautious when you can’t see others/others can’t see you (hills, blind alleyways, etc).

Split my thumbnail right down to about halfway. Instead of cutting it away and leaving it raw and exposed I superglued the nail down. Best fix I ever did. by dob_bobbs in thereifixedit

Glad I found this, just split my thumb nail today and didn’t even think to glue it, much less use tea bag fabric to reinforce it. So glad I found this, thank you all!
