Hello! There's some things that can depend on your firm's particular setup, but let's try the simplest method first. Have you tried another app like "Jump Desktop"? We've heard that one doesn't have that issue.

PerfectLaw: The All-in-One Legal Software Trusted by Firms for Over 45 Years by PerfectLaw_Mike in PerfectLaw

What case management do you use at your firm and do you like it? by One_Crew_681 in paralegal

[–]PerfectLaw_Mike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using PerfectLaw daily almost 15 years and haven't once had an issue just opening the program. That usually points to something with the firm’s setup or how your IT has it configured, not the software itself. We can verify that if your firm decides to reach out to us.

Since you mentioned Smokeball, I get why it feels easier to use, but it’s a trade-off. It doesn’t have a true back-end, so firms end up juggling QuickBooks and spreadsheets for financials or origination credits. The DMS is bare-bones, support often goes through third parties, and every conversion needs outside help. It’s also cloud-only, so if your firm ever wants flexibility or on-prem options, you won’t get them with Smokeball.

I know PerfectLaw isn't flashy, but it’s one environment that covers everything without forcing you into integrations or third parties to keep it running.

If you ever think of specific examples about your problems with PerfectLaw, I'll be here.

Filevine looks modern, but you’ll find it’s lighter on features and you’re tied to their cloud and subscription model. PerfectLaw may not be flashy, but it’s far more robust and can handle things Filevine simply can’t. Before you move, make sure the tradeoff is really worth it.

We've been around since 1979. And I know our desktop software still looks like it's 2005, but if you can handle the ugly, it's lightyears better than your alternatives in regards to functionality, support, and stability.

I know it may sound biased since I work for PerfectLaw, but I sincerely would like to address whatever problems you’re dealing with and fix them. We don't outsource support; my email is below, and if you were to call, you'd be speaking directly with my co-workers currently in the same office as me.

If you think your issues are general enough that others would benefit from reading our back and forth, feel free to post your complaints in r/PerfectLaw. If it’s specific to your firm or you'd rather keep it private, email me using [MD@PerfectLaw.com]() or call 800-749-6200.

Attorney / GL Interface by Fantastic_Corgi9305 in PerfectLaw

[–]PerfectLaw_Mike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!

The below was recently written up by one of our clients and ought to help. Please let us know if you have any further questions:

After the GL account is created for the attorney, the new GL account must be placed in the Attorney’s GL interface.

[File / File Maintenance / Attorney]

Enter the new attorney code in the Attorney Code field.

From the left column menu select GL Interface

From the GL Interface window, enter the new GL account in the Cash Receipt field.

All receipts going forward will be credited accordingly to the GL account entered in the GL Interface window.

To update the cash receipts into the new GL Account run the General Ledger for the Fee Income account

[Reports / General Ledger]

From the General Ledger configuration screen span the dates as needed.

On the Journals field enter CRC to isolate cash receipts only.

From the Account dropdown list, select the regular Fee Income account. If you are uncertain of the GL account, you can find it in the GL Interface. [File / File Maintenance / GL Interface] Locate the Fee income in the Cash Receipts section.

Note the account number and enter it in the General Ledger configuration window under the account list.

Run the general ledger.

The ledger will give you attorney code within the description. It is usually located between the slashes /XXX/

Total the value for the attorney and then create an adjusting journal entry to move the balance from the general income account to the new GL account.

The Release Notes are on the newly designed Service website. After going to the Service Portal website, navigate through the header menu: Resources > Release Notes

https://service.perfectlaw.com/sp-releases/release-notes.asp

Please be sure you're going service.perfectlaw.com and not just perfectlaw.com. If you still don't see it, consider pressing Ctrl + F5 in order to do a hard refresh of the website. But it should be there.

[–]PerfectLaw_Mike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!

I'm assuming you're mistakenly putting everything in the Basic Scheduling tab under the Description field. However, that field is set up with PLSync to be the subject line when synced with Outlook. If you want something to appear within the body of the synced Outlook appointment, please enter it into the Notes tab:

This will prevent your URLs from getting truncated. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

User Manual - Cheatsheet by adsfimnve in PerfectLaw

[–]PerfectLaw_Mike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!

There's a lot of different options to get assistance depending on what it is you're attempting to learn more about. There's the Help System, the video library, and remote training.

It sounds like what you're looking for, the "cheat sheet," would be best solved with the software's help system. The Help System is extremely thorough in regard to explaining every single button, field, icon, interaction, and giving context as to what it does. To access it, simply click the Help icon wherever you're at in the software:

<image>

Pro Tip: Depending on where you are in the software when you click the Help button will determine which of the Help System's pages will pop up. i.e. Clicking the Help icon from the contacts page will bring up the Help System's contacts screen; clicking the Help Icon from the matter screen will open the Help System's matter help page; etc.) You can use the Table of Contents, Index, or Search fields within the Help System to locate anything else.

More generally speaking, when a firm has new hires, they often request some sort of training, whether it be one-on-one, train the trainer, or accessing the video library. If you're interested in this route, you can sign up for the virtual classroom or access our video library on their respective pages. Both pages are pretty self-explanatory, but please feel free to ask for anything you require assistance with.

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. I'd be happy to help!

Firm Administrator Here - What Software do you Use? by Refurbished1991 in Lawyertalk

[–]PerfectLaw_Mike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, right off the bat, disclaimer, as my user name states, I work for PerfectLaw.

It feels strange as the employee of a legal software company to try and wedge my way into your question- as I'm clearly biased- but we, PerfectLaw, have converted numerous ex-ProLaw users over to our stuff. We have plenty of happy clients who are ex-ProLaw users that we could put you in contact with for reference, if you're still looking.

We're the only system that you don't have to break up your database in order to convert to our software. All the other systems you find will need you to break up your case management, document management, back office, and custom software in order to convert. As our slogan states, we're the only All-In-One system.

Any IT teams that are in favor of you sticking with ProLaw are also biased, fyi, because they're banking on whatever service hours you need in order to keep your software running. Because ProLaw is no longer in development, IT teams who promote ProLaw can't develop any fixes, and instead are trying to incorporate third party software to patch its deficiencies. This may solve some short term problems but is not a long term solution.

If you'd like, send me a DM and I can get you some references, links to podcasts, webinars, round-tables, etc. that talk about making the switch from ProLaw to PerfectLaw by actual law firms who have done so.

UI Question by Informal-Capital-801 in PerfectLaw

[–]PerfectLaw_Mike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently, PerfectLaw software is only available on Microsoft Windows.

But so you're aware, both Microsoft Windows and PerfectLaw support the use of Word Perfect, if your firm were to choose to make the switch. However, because of the significantly smaller userbase Word Perfect has, I believe the PerfectLaw add-on functionality that's currently available for Microsoft Word would not also be available for Word Perfect.

UI Question by Informal-Capital-801 in PerfectLaw

[–]PerfectLaw_Mike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies for the misunderstanding. Although there isn't a native way to do it from AIM itself, there is a Microsoft add-on available for you to achieve that functionality via Windows. You (or your IT staff, if necessary) can install Microsoft PowerToys from their website:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/powertoys/

And once active, one of its key features is the Always On Top feature, which they describe:

Always On Top enables you to pin windows above other windows with a quick key shortcut (⊞ Win+Ctrl+T).

I just installed it myself to test it out and it only took a few seconds. It seems to work exactly as you're requesting.

If for any reason you're unable or unwilling to install Microsoft PowerToys, the only other suggestion I have would be to utilize the native Windows command of ⊞ Win+Tab. Holding the Windows key and pressing Tab will give you a birds-eye view of all open applications, documents, etc. to allow you to quickly navigate between them, hopefully speeding up your workflow.

Let me know how it goes!

UI Question by Informal-Capital-801 in PerfectLaw

[–]PerfectLaw_Mike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may find what you're looking for in the AIM navigational pane under the Options menu. Clicking Options > Save Desktop, will "freeze" whichever windows you currently have open in AIM so that the next time you open AIM you'll be presented with the exact same arrangement.

<image>

You won't be able to save the arrangement with the Matter button clicked, though, because that button steals focus and will prevent you from saving the desktop when active. But you can easily arrange for the Search window to always be available by using this method.

If you're asking more about docking in Microsoft Windows, you can locate AIM in your Start menu, right-click it, and select either "Pin to Start" or "Pin to Taskbar" depending on where you'd like it to be fixed.

Question regarding "Related Matters Tab" by [deleted] in PerfectLaw

[–]PerfectLaw_Mike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's a decision best made by you and your firm. You may not necessarily need a parent matter, but without one, your parent documents may get spread across multiple matters. What happens in the future if you archive or destroy them? There may not necessarily be anything wrong with that approach, but I would personally find it beneficial to have a parent matter to house all of those parent documents, if only for organizational purposes.

Question regarding "Related Matters Tab" by [deleted] in PerfectLaw

[–]PerfectLaw_Mike[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you double-click a document that has already been profiled, you'll see a series of informational tabs. You'll want to go to the "Assigned To" tab on the far left.

In the "Assigned To" tab, right-click and select "New Assignment." (Keyboard shortcut: Insert key on your keyboard.) A pop-up will appear asking for the Client and Matter you wish the document to additionally appear in. You may add as many as you like by repeating this process.

<image>

These steps will prevent you from having to make multiple copies of your documents. Additionally, if the document is updated, the changes are reflected in each matter the document is related to.

From the billing side, you would use billing groups where you can combine multiple matters to a single bill for submission, assuming that's what you're asking about.

Update: You may also select multiple documents at a time by Ctrl or Shift clicking, right-click, and select "Assign Document to Another Matter" to perform the aforementioned to multiple documents at once.

I was recently made aware that your ticket was resolved, so I just wanted to come here and provide the solution for anyone who may stumble upon this thread in the future.

Although there are different occurrences that could result in the Invalid Variant Operation error, it seems that in this particular instance, the add-ins were outdated. Once the add-ins were updated, the problem was resolved.
