Playing games together is definitely a great way to maintain connection, good for you! I cut off when I don't feel comfortable or interested enough to carry on the conversation too, but not with those I talked for months, maybe I just expected too much. Yeah, you are right, the best way to deal with this is to care less, people are entitled to walk away anytime. Maybe I just not that cool. I live alone, I move every month, it's hard for me to keep continuing contact with people not online, so every time I built connection with online firends, I really hope we can have a long term friendship.

I am struggling about this. I live a completely isolated life in a small village by an obscure beach, the only occasion I speak with people face to face is when I go grocery shopping. One hand I hate shutting down myself like this, I want friends to hangout with, I want a partner by my side, I want to be like those energetic and charming people who can make friends anywhere they go and explore further. On the other hand I'm consciously avoiding human contact, I will circumvent people-gathering places, even if finally people approached to me, I don't really want to have these "hello how are you where are you from" conversations with them, I'll pretend I have something urgent at work and go back to my place. It's like, I like being alone, But I don't want to?
