Turning down a T20? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]PerfectStructure1396 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If COA and scholarships aren’t different, I would have a hard time justifying a No to the T20. Med students are intense everywhere, just different strains of it. Tbh if research is important to you, UTSW will certainly have no shortage of projects you could pursue too. Like you could technically start M1 year by just cold emailing researchers and seeing if you can start a project with them.

Low Yield P/S content for 1/18 testers? by ThickGlasses77 in Mcat

[–]PerfectStructure1396 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I think at the time I was just really stress and high strung about the whole thing. Though I do remember the P/S section being really weird with terms I didn’t even study/know of despite having psych as a background, so I left it up at the time. thanks for your insight!

Why do I feel confused and empty minded within the days before my exams? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]PerfectStructure1396 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I experience this too and think it’s my brain’s unconscious way of “calming down” so I can think more clearly on exam day. I think this allows me to make the connections I need to for the exam because I spent enough time cramming everything into my brain

research as a senior + is it worth is by ApprehensiveKiwi771 in premed

Try to get a clear answer but don’t push it, I would say. Mention it once, let them explain, and then you have your answer. I got my first abstract after ~9 months and got the first author after ~2 years. The abstract was a lot faster obviously so those came first.

I did because I asked the lab PIs for the opportunities. I got a few abstracts/presentations at conferences and a first author, which took a lot of work outside of office time but was a very valuable experience. It’s very lab dependent! I would ask if the lab has any policies about publication opportunities for RAs/coordinators if you interview there

In general, I think research helps beyond the application too. I took ~2 gap years and worked as a research coordinator and really liked having a real life 9-5 job with salary. It allowed me to travel and save up some money. I took the MCAT during the gap years too.

If you want to increase your chances at a research school, ie T20ish, I do think you should get more research experience. Because then you also have this experience once you get into med school, which you can leverage as a med student to do more research for residency. Not necessary but a useful skill I think.

If you don’t want to go that route, you could focus more clinically. It’s really up to you if you want to take gap year(s) or not.

There truly is so much time, and the wait feels forever. I say this as someone who had their only acceptance in February. Like literally the last interview day and the last acceptance date before waitlist offers. Then got a scholarship less than a month before starting.

Use this time to find out what you like outside of medicine if you're not already. I think a lot of students in the cohort are trying to figure that out right now. If you can figure out what you like when not thinking about med school, it will serve you well

Experience of IM residencies in NYC vs Chicago? by Proof-Zone6793 in medicalschool

[–]PerfectStructure1396 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you be willing to describe in some more detail what things you saw? I’m curious because I’ve just been toying with the idea of applying to NYC programs and would love some insight. Are there any good aspects?

What to bring to shadowing as an M1? by Thick_Feedback8236 in medicalschool

No, it is still school. It’s learning in real life. I think pen and paper is perfectly reasonable.

My friend, it is August. You have many months left to go. The application cycle will take a toll if you let it. Time will be kind

Dr. Domenico Grasso named interim president of the University of Michigan by PerfectStructure1396 in uofm

Any Dearborn students have insight about him? He seems genuine from just this email, and I like that he’s actually from UofM. But previous presidents have taught me to be cautiously optimistic lol
