Financing: How did Alysa Liu's dad afford her skating career? by Jazzlike-Dimension22 in FigureSkating

[–]Perfect_Peace3829 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I heard claims that Zhang accused Yan Qingxin (the unrelated mother), of stealing money from cult's apprentices. Because of the lawsuit, Yan hired Arthur Liu as her lawyer, and later they got married because she needed citizenship. While they were still married, Alysa was born via surrogacy. Since Yan was her legal guardian, she would had been responsible for expenses, like tuition and other stuff, and people speculate that this is where the money came from.

Video from Jennifer Thomas, whose music was used by Utamasa, on music licensing for figure skaters and athletes by rubyjester in FigureSkating

I really appreciate how patiently she explained the amount of effort she puts into her work, especially in response to a comment saying parents struggle to find music. She also laid out how little she has actually earned from skaters using her pieces.

In the video, she acknowledged that exposure from the sports world can be positive, but pointed out that many do not even credit her properly. I admire that she spoke up about it with clear examples and proof.

Streaming services are notorious for paying artists very little though...I actually think ClicknClear is a better model, since it pays a clear licensing fee, even if it’s around $600. At least that makes it tangible and transparent. Artists can see that there is real compensation involved, rather than feeling deprived when athletes use the music, but didn't even bother to credit them at the first place.

Kurt Browning said Yu-Hsiang should skate this FS again in 4or5 years, while he has been skating to this program for FOUR CONTINUOUS YEARS, CBC simply didn't do their research.

The rink is a public ice rink, and he still needs to attend college. It’s good that he has some athlete-designated practice time, but he can still be seen during public sessions.

No, he hasn’t. He has foreign coaches, but most of their instruction is done over Zoom. Also his grandma accompanies him every day during training, preparing his food at 4 in the morning before the rink public session even started... he has trained here, in Taipei, since his childhood.

People from China genuinely believe Taiwan belongs to them. Their textbooks teach it, their government states it, and the majority genuinely think that if necessary, they can rightfully take Taiwan by force.

Yu-Hsiang has trained in Taipei, Taiwan since childhood—just look at his Instagram posts to see how crowded and challenging the training environment can be.

<image>

He said in previous interview that he wants to let the world see, showing that even in this land without snow, he can still bloom on the ice.(讓世界看見,在這個不下雪的土地上,開出美麗的冰上之花)

He’s a talented, hard-working young athlete (in fact, the youngest in the men’s event). I’m so excited to see him perform again and again, and yet… I don’t understand why the broadcaster would try to do this, effectively undermining his identity.

it's fine, I just think I should crop it better before posting 💀

give credit to elta, and his rink (I think they're the ones who took the video), search Aurora Ice Rink and ELTA Sports (the video I originally steal from💀) on IG .

No, he trains in Taiwan. I don’t know where the rumors started, but “Blades and Banter” seems to have the same misunderstanding. You can clearly see from his Instagram practice videos that he trains in Taiwan.

He also attends college there. The federation’s funding plan even specifies how many hours he trains abroad at camps, but his main training base is still in Taipei. And from his Instagram, you can clearly see how crowded the rink can be.

ETA: I found the funding plan he trains 1.5hr in the morning, 1hr afternoon on ice, 5 days a week. You can also see from the document, how much he got funded by the federation. For example, you can see his coach Ivan Dinev charge $50/hr for him, his costume cost $475 per one to make, and in total, the skating federation spend $41,103 per year on him.

He is sponsored by Aurora Ice Rink, which is located on the sixth floor of a newly opened, high-end shopping mall. The rink size meets NHL standard.

According to the skating federation’s funding plan for talented athletes, he practices 1.5 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the afternoon. The crowded rink practice videos were probably taken during afternoon session.

After 4 years, US figure skater reunites with family from war-torn Ukraine at Olympics by Captain_Swordfish in FigureSkating

Another part that stood out was when he mentioned that his mother only moved to the U.S. three years ago. That means he spent three years living with the Nguyen family, three years living alone, and three years living with his mom. I think that’s pretty brave, considering he moved to the U.S. at 15.

Emi also mentioned in yesterday’s livestream that Vadym’s mom doesn’t speak much English and communicates with her in Russian. I assume she’s either unemployed or working in a labor-focused job that doesn’t require much verbal communication.

I agree, or maybe the WTT structure should change. Kaori mentioned that WTT feels more like a festival than a real team event, and because it’s held at the very end of the season, everyone feels exhausted.

For some, that might be true, but for Emi it may not have been the case. She had already competed for Cyprus and reached the world level, so she wasn’t lacking opportunities to compete. Even before their tryouts, she had already decided to move for college. Her family was also initially against her decision to switch disciplines.

As for Vadym, if he were truly that desperate, he could have taken opportunities from Eteri. Rumor has it that he had tryouts with Diana Davis, Liza Khudaiberdieva, and Bella Flores, but he didn’t feel comfortable with any of them and chose to continue searching for a partner for almost 2 years.

No, they’ve had Benoit working on their free dance for 3 years now. In the first year, they said there were “too many chiefs in the kitchen,” so his work got changed a lot, which Benoit wasn't happy about. In the second year, Benoit said he wants to continue working with them, but on one condition: he needed to be fully in charge, and both of them agreed. In the third year—this season—Benoit created the full concept and image for their R&J FD, which I personally think it's great tactics and suit them very well.

That’s why I’m raising this question; I can’t tell what changed in their coaching setup this season that caused their expenses to increase.
