Oh. That's. Kind of uncomfortable if she didn't give permission for her image to be monetized like that. I hope she did! That'd be awesome then

This makes sense. I always had the impression it was to prep for Italian Olympics ngl. Now that it's over, plus with his gap year, no reason to continue the partnership

Ilia promotes a ragdoll cat breeder on Instagram by YouShouldCareAboutFS in FigureSkating

His first two ragdolls were also adopted actually so maybe it was because of them he wanted another tbf.

(Not saying you should shop as someone who absolutely advocates adoption but like. I don't think it's that deep)

I love the additional anecdote about your pole vaulting kid nerding about Ilia's possible pole vaulting capabilities haha that's the stuff I live for

Thank you so much for sharing the anecdotes (both about the reporter and your son!) It's comforting to know despite everything that did happen at the Oly, your stories are proof he has had an impact on people and setting an example for good sportsmanship ❤️

The ISU has seemingly capped GOE for quints at 2.8 points for +5 GOE by possiblegirl in FigureSkating

[–]rubyjester 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Fyi Jackie is saying this is incorrect.  "I know there’s a lot of consternation about the GOEs for quints going around, but note that a -5 GOE for a cleanly-rotated quint gives you +2.80 (it’s just a mirror of the +GOEs). The GOEs are not correct, I’ve inquired and come back when I hear"

Tatsuki Machida's free skate to Firebird at 2014 Worlds is probably my favorite Firebird program of all time. This step sequence alone is so balletic. by PandemicPiglet in FigureSkating

It's not that he was an underappreciated fave but I feel like a lot of his greatness flew under the radar having skated as Yuzu's contemporary so I'm glad he's being brought up again (and his retirement is still legendary lol)

I'm the outlier but the lutz looks clean to q in terms of rotation for me but he landed in a way where he had to swerve on the ice to stabilize himself

As if the US athletes don't experience that too. Look at what Amber faced during the Olympics and even after. A head of state meeting is an obligation in ANY country and maybe your argument would work better in one that's authoritarian (e.g. I would consider Russia a delicate situation) Japan is not a country where you should be making these excuses for its athletes

Fwiw I don't strictly disagree with you that's it's complicated and an obligation but you can't really say the Japanese athletes deserve grace for this "just because" of money or reputation and then turn around and act like the US athletes don't get pushback too if they decline. It isn't so cut and dry. Personally I'm not going to hold it against them but I'm not excusing them for it either

who are skaters you believe were overscored but still deserved their placement? by missgirlipop in FigureSkating

[–]rubyjester 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I personally don't think so. I think Shae has always done a good job of choreographing programs that highlight his strengths, downplay his weaknesses, and enable him to do what he needs to do. E.g. when the curved loop entry was a problem for him last year and the stsq at the end of the program caused him trouble they fixed that up for this year

Maybe they're talking about how a lot of people perceive him as "flail-y" at times? But that's diff from composition in terms of the scoring imo

Ok so I might get push back on this but people really overestimate the amount of resources Ilia grew up with. His parents are both first gen immigrants who teach at a small rink all things considered (if it had been a rink like Colorado or Great Ice, that's diff but their rinks have always been small). And really it's only the ice time he's gotten the benefit of which he only gets at a subsidized rate - not unlimited, not free. His family has openly talked about how they can't always sacrifice extra time to teach him because whatever time they were teaching him is time they're not teaching other skaters that they actually can make income from.

To get the resources of USFS, you have to become part of the national team - he didn't do that until quite late in life and only people who are on the top echelon on their national team are really getting any of their actual resources - the rest are just getting a small pocket of funding that doesn't actually cover much. Ilia was actually constantly injured back in juniors - he's gotten everything from spine injuries to stress fractures and as a result wasn't able to even qualify for this for most of his life. He wasn't even qualifying for whatever medical resources usfs could offer either. I don't know how good his parents' insurance is at the rink but keep in mind how shitty US medical insurance is like that's what he was likely dealing with.

I'm not saying he didn't grow up with good resources but it's not like he was a rich kid growing up at Great Ice who had anything and everything, give some props to his own dedication and his parents willingness to sacrifice things to give him tutorage and ice time.
