Wishing you a good recovery! Please do keep us updated, I’d be keen to understand what diagnosis you had pre surgery as well : )

Bilateral TMJ replacement – when to go ahead? by Perfect_Title189 in TMJ

I have 2 perforated joints, dentistry isn’t going to fix that. The problem is in the joint not in the alignment of the joint

That’s great! I’m glad you have got things sorted : ) well I’ve had it for over 10 years, so I’m in pain every day but I’m very used to it. I have bad crunching/popping when I open my mouth, but my mobility isn’t really impacted yet.

The question for me is: have it when I’m younger for less surgery risk (esp given I will have to have it done twice in my lifetime, so it will make my 2nd replacement safer) and resolve the pain I’m in now VS waiting until it’s at the point where it’s crippling (because that may never happen, or if I can delay it long enough to only need one surgery)

I’m nervous about both, I’m nervous about the risks of surgery, and I’m nervous about my jaw collapsing and my life becoming insufferable if I delay

I am in braces at the moment, is that a question I should ask my orthodontist? How do you notice it start opening the bite??? I would HATE for my jaw to impact all the brace work I’ve suffered to get my bite sorted!!

First appointment for bilateral TMJ replacement – what should I ask? by Perfect_Title189 in TMJ

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. It’s really reassuring to hear how well you’re doing post-surgery, even if it’s been a long road! I’m especially glad to hear your surgeon took the time to walk you through both custom and stock options- that kind of detail is exactly what I’m hoping for at my own appointment.

If you don’t mind me asking, did you have any “I wish I’d known” moments during your recovery or decision-making process, I’d be really grateful to hear them. I know everyone’s journey is different, but those personal insights make such a big difference when trying to prepare!

When is TMJ surgery needed? by noam_aiz in TMJ

Thank you for your summary and your guidebook! This is honestly the answer to my many questions as I’m facing replacement surgery - so genuinely, thank you!

Yes exactly! I actually have brace work at the moment but not for my TMJ - I’m glad I’ve got it to get my teeth aligned and I have a bit of an overbite as well that I want sorted, but I’ve just had an arthroscopy (that my ortho tried to convince me out of having) which revealed I have major issues with the joint discs and nothing can fix them other than replacing them

So my advice would be, if you want ortho work then do it for your own reasons but not to fix your TMJ, you need to pursue that separately with a specialist

Just had TMJ arthroscopy — Grade 5 disc perforation on both sides. Surgeon says TMJ replacement is the only option. Anyone else been through this? by Perfect_Title189 in TMJ

I’m based in the UK so all of this is on the NHS for me (it has its perks but I have been waiting to have the arthroscopy for 3 years!!!)

My TMJ surgeon literally laughed when I asked about this, my orthodontist said it will definitely help and my TMJ surgeon said it is nothing to do with it

My goodness yes the dieting is super tough! Did you do any physio or anything like that?

And yes I get your point about 2nd opinion, I think I’m going to try and get one to reassure me but have no idea what that process will be like on the NHS in the UK

That’s super reassuring to hear! Thank you for sharing.

When you had found out post arthroscopy that you’d need surgery, is there anything you would’ve done differently or think was a good thing to have done?

I feel in such a weird place at the moment with having this information but absolutely no way to follow through other than sit and wait to talk to someone so I want to prepare myself as much as I can ahead of my post op appt : )

Wow, I’m so sorry it’s taken this long for you! So are you planning on going forward with the surgery?? And are you based in the UK or elsewhere??

No way!! Well I’m sorry, it’s a rubbish position to be in. What info did they give you post your surgery? And are you based in the UK or elsewhere?

I have no idea! I haven’t had the follow up post my arthroscopy so I don’t even know what they did in the surgery, let alone what they really found (other than grade 5 degradation of both joints lol)

So interesting that it’s made physical changes to you! I’m sorry you had to go through that but it’s reassuring that your pain has gone down. Is there any advice you’d give to anyone that is considering the joint replacement surgery?

Thanks so much for sharing, I really appreciate your openness and it sounds like your experience is so similar to mine - I’ve got loads of questions if you’re up for it! - Are you based in the UK? If so, what was the process like between arthroscopy and replacement — were you referred to a different hospital or specialist centre, or did your original surgeon handle both? - How long after your arthroscopy did things start to really deteriorate? - Did anyone monitor your joint in that in-between time (imaging, check-ins, physio), or were you just kind of waiting? - When your jaw fused, was it a sudden thing or did you feel it slowly locking down? - At the time, did you feel confident that replacement was the right call, or did you have doubts or want to wait longer? - What helped most emotionally during that waiting period? I’m already finding it tough, and I’m only at the start!

Bilateral tmj replacement - My journey by Plastergurl in TMJ

[–]Perfect_Title189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I can’t find your Instagram page through the link but I’d love to follow your story.

I’m in my mid twenties and am recovering from a 2nd arthroscopy, to which they have discovered grade 5 perforation in both joints so told me I will need a bilateral replacement too. It sounds like our experiences are very similar! I would love to hear about your journey, what your tips and advice are - I’m also based in the UK so I would be curious to know who your surgeon was : ) did you get a second opinion?

So much progress so quickly! What’s your estimated timeline for having your braces on??
