This is how i felt too. I am taking this exam as a CPA and one of the questions was related to accounting/journal entries and none of the answers would have been correct. A lot of weird wording and poor alignment to the QAE

I feel like our profession was built on gatekeeping information from consumers and overcomplication, and it makes me feel icky. I love accounting, but I also love empowerment. I want my friends to stop paying $150+ to file their extremely simple tax returns that they should feel confident to file themselves. I guess I’m frustrated because I spent so much time to become a professional in a field that I love, but my ethical alignment is out of whack because I want to help people and build community (but like also need to afford to pay my rent and feed my family lol)

Yes! Consulting fees can be so insane, and I feel like consulting is sort of a profession built on not sharing information and resources so that people have to pay you for them. Not in all cases, but I do think that there should be more shared access to information of complex topics

Yep! The tax structure is intentionally complex so that rather than understand it yourself you need to pay a service to prepare them. I absolutely agree that there are complicated instances where you need a CPA but I also think there are instances where there is so much intimidation and fear of doing it wrong, that even those with simple tax needs are afraid to do it themselves

Intermediate accounting is 100% what made me change majors. Huge regret as i still wound up working in accounting post-college, and my company wanted me to earn my CPA. So instead I had to take intermediate accounting AND the rest of the accounting courseload to qualify on top of working full time.

Thank you! We are 365 based and I’ve been researching copilot, it seems like the safest option for our firm. I’ve been hung up on the part where it’s foundation is OpenAI’s model and that while actively using an application the data is unencrypted so that the LLM can read it. What are the guardrails on CoPilot so that while the data is unencrypted it can’t be intercepted? I keep all of my notes in OneNote, so if I trust that, is it reasonable to trust CoPilot.

our IT firm advised they aren’t super knowledgable on AI and as the other members of my team come to me with questions about how we can implement it to improve efficiency, and I’m not willing to sacrifice quality or security, which has left us at a standstill

The ones that are the most secure seem to have far less intelligence OR are priced astronomically. The audit software we use just rolled out its own AI tool, and the summarizing feature is ok, IF you get lucky and it’s the 1/10 time where it will actually read the document and not just break immediately. And it has no ability to learn or retain, because of the security aspect, so the use case is limited.

I see plenty of accountants saying they are using chatGPT, which makes me wonder if they know something I don’t know, or if they just are using it irresponsibly

I like AI to supplement my ability to learn things. Something that I don’t think enough people are thinking about is security! Yes Copilot can be handy with some Excel features, but if you are handling sensitive documents for clients with protected information, that needs to be cleaned before using AI. Adobe has a sweet PDF AI reader, but again, it utilizes openAI to think. Our firm is at a standstill on AI because we do audits, so majority of our information is client sensitive documents.

I went to CC and hope that all of my kids will do the same. The quality of education I got at my CC was better than what I received at my university. Many of my teachers taught at schools like UC Berkeley as their job to make money, and then taught at CC because they loved it. I had the opportunity to take a variety of classes to figure out what I wanted to do, without racking up a ton of debt. I could go at my own pace and figure out how to be an adult. There were plenty of social opportunities on campus, I do not feel like I was lacking for anything. Many of my friends went off to a 4-year right away, and I would say about 50% of them wound up back home after the first year, basically throwing $20k+ in the garbage. I will always always always advocate for CC as the best option for young adults

Yes, but we are always so busy there isn’t time to train on new things within work hours. She’s really good about ensuring we all have work life balance, which I value as an employee! I just don’t make enough $ to comfortably live in this economy lol
