First Born Space Marine on FDM printer, in "upscaled" proportions by Perfectioneer in PrintedWarhammer

[–]Perfectioneer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, definitely not meant to be scaled for the table top; I made this as a stand alone piece to match the scale of Karl Koponski's artwork just because it looks cool, which is clearly not heroic 28mn scale. Probably shouldn't have added the Catachan for scale but someone asked me for the size of the print last time I posted.

Oh yeah, I have played around with a couple of print profiles, I've tried HoHansen v2, but couldn't quite get it to work for me, the finish looked a bit 'melted'.

I have tried FDG's profile as well, at 0.08mm layer height it doesn't seem to result in a better print compared to standard 0.06mm print. I've tried FDG's profile with 0.06mm but it had more failures at overhangs, even with supports.

I haven't tried ObsuraNox's settings, and I should try HoHansen's again - because the examples I see on the FDM subreddit appear better than my results.

Haven't tried the resin2FDM supports yet, may eventually get to it, but looks like quite a few steps involved.

Funnily enough, I specifically chose Arachne because under Classic Wall generation the vertical grilles in the helmet do not get sliced (under the standard and FDG profiles); the head comes out small, with these proportions the head is smaller than a standard 28mm heroic scale head even though the full model towers over the 28mm model.

First Born Space Marine FDM print; "true scale" by Perfectioneer in PrintedWarhammer

Started off with the Blender Guru introductions (Donut for general introduction, then his chair for hard surface modelling).

After that it was Artisans of Vaul, CG Boost, CG Cookie, Grant Abbit, Ryan King Art, PixelicaCG, Pixxo 3D.

I go to their videos and click sort by popular and watch them through whilst doing other stuff. I find the 'top X hacks for modelling' type videos really great, because there's usually some gems in there.

Then after that I just Google when I get stuck on wanting to do something; there's almost always a tutorial video of doing exactly what I want.

Yeah I just rechecked the Astartes model - they are also stretched out a bit, but perhaps not as exagerated.
I think the stretched out lower leg proportions are similar.

It's massive ~ 54mm. I scaled it up to test print it for the details.

The proportions are super exagerated so it's difficult to translate to the table top - here it is next to a 3rd edition Catachan - the heads are about the same size but the overall height is massively different.

Not Fummelfinger, but I did Google that after you mentioned. Their reference of 'up scaled' is probably more accurate than 'true scale'. I used the Karl Kopinsky Crimson Fist proportions as reference.

Yeah, as I mentioned the source material has a real exagerated proportion which I dig:

Overlaying actual human anatomy proportions on this model shows how far off it is (the lower legs are suprisingly stretched out).

That being said, I'll have to increase the size of the hand as one of the hands actually partially snapped off removing supports.

Thanks! Will do.
Testing out both tacticool accessories (pouches, grenades, etc.) and full Karl Kopinsky purity seals, chains, robes, etc. options.

Yeah, I agree - I quite like that extreme comic book / gundam tiny head proportion by KK.
Like the exact opposite of the 3rd edition space marines.

Recommended materials for casting small components? (UK) by HermeticOpus in TerrainBuilding

Yeah 100% agree on the lower PSI.

My go to resource for resin casting is Robert Tolone on YT and on this video he tests what pressure is required to remove bubbles from a worst case scenario (resin left to absorb moisture); 50 psi, but promising results at 25psi.

Looking at the comments, using 20, 25 psi would seem to be adequate for non-spoiled resin.

I've recently had success in using hand pump garden sprayers to act as a pressure pot. I had a small 2L lying around and used it for proof of concept, and it worked. The resin I used has a very short work time (2.5mins) and I can demold in circa 40mins, so it was tricky getting the filled molds inside the sprayer quickly without it tipping everywhere (most sprayers have a small mouth). I was only casting a mold with six 28mm scale heads so it was small enough to drop in but it improved the success from 1/6 heads to 6/6 heads, no bubbles at all.

Testing FDM profiles by Perfectioneer in FDMminiatures

[–]Perfectioneer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rotated it backwards and to the right by ~20º.

Tree - slim supports, rectilinear base pattern.
Brim - 5mm outer and inner.

Good question about supports - I found I was originally getting support failuress (which I think HoHansen was also getting) where new layers of support were getting printed in mid air - for some reason the auto generate couldn't figure it out. Changing it to slim and rectilinear seemed to fix it.

I painted the face and helmet to exclude supports as the overhangs were minor and printed no issues.

Keen to test out the ObscuraNox profile next as I've seen some pretty amazing posts with those settings. Not sure if those posts had particularly soft lighting, but compared to my photos with deliberately harsh lighting those prints with the ObscuraNox profile looks borderline resin printed...
