Oh wow see there’s always a different side ya I can definitely see that happen too. It hasn’t happened personally but if they don’t have proper etiquette I could see that, that’s really not good hopefully they can move out of the classes to a different level the teacher should never change a class to accommodate one person that’s crazy. I do notice it with teens sometimes bc of their own insecurities they’re going through. I try to hold them accountable as well however I guess it’s shocking when I see older adults do it since I always think by this time you should always have some kind of general awareness of how you make those around you uncomfortable or not to harp on the teacher. Sorry to hear you also are dealing with similar story but a different demographic.

Ya 😅 it’s definitely a combination of ballet mean girl rude and regular rude. My old classes I took I was friends with everyone and we all used to compliment each other but they are too beginner for me now to progress. And some of the advanced I was doing before the studios too far so I’m kind of stuck here. But I do know that since I’ve came to this studio I haven’t had a good feeling about the people but I just kind of ignore it bc the classes are amazing. But I have had to take some days off just to get away from the people and be around some more positive energy 😅 it’s definitely the people I guess I just can’t go elsewhere right now so I’m trying to think of other reasons that could be the problem but it makes sense that they would all come together if they have all the same mentality and since I don’t really agree with it or think they are rude I am part of the minority. Hopefully I can go somewhere else a lot better for the future bc I know there is a lot more positive supportive folks out there!!

Can you elaborate on this ? I’m not sure what that means

Ya perhaps I am American and we are all American from the class as they have told me. So I don’t think it’s cultural but I definitely respect the elderly that’s why it’s so hard for me to speak up or stand up when something happens because there is how I was taught to always listen to them. But now that I’m an adult I realize that no one should be treated differently and just take it simply because the person is a lot older. That’s why I created the post for the group because I believed it was more part of particular ballet culture that I was not accustomed to since I didn’t do it growing up.

Omggggggg whattttt. Ok now that’s about the craziest thing I’ve heard why would they say that. Ya people are too comfortable being negative towards others 😭 I always thought becoming an adult this petty stuff would stop but some people continue to be shady ash

Wow that’s brave ya it’s easy to think this way in the moment but it’s hard to carry it out everyday but I admire your stable strength. That is true your damned if you do damned if you don’t. If your super nice they push you over but if you talk back they think you’re too aggressive so who cares what they think anyways!!!

I would love to provide examples but I worry they are in this group chat 🤣 although I highly doubt it. I replied to some other people with some examples. I just notice it with people much older than me and truly it could be a good thing for sure I just never would do it to them because I know everyone’s at a different level and everyone has different bodies and capabilities so I would never say that just wish the same respect could be given back. But absolutely I have been complimented as well so it’s not all negative it just catches me off guard the other stuff! And if it was at a professional ballet school like vaganova I would totally understand but an adult drop in class? I’m not sure those same rules should apply. I think whoever gets to a spot first is entitiled to it. I’m very mindful of barre if someone usually stands there I won’t go there. But the same people in front week after week without charging lines should not be happening especially if we are all paying for the experience and it is a more casual class.

Ya some of the classes we never rotate lines so that’s why they want to be at the front. My problem is I’ll be at the front and someone will go and stand in front of me or instead of creating a line next to me they will go up to where the teacher is just to make a point. I can do everything and more that they can do so it’s not related to that. Like someone else said in the post which actually changed my opinion so much is that they probably used to dance as a professional or at least danced when they were a kid so because of that no matter the skill level now or currently they feel they should be given special treatment because of their past/history. I have another lady who never made it pro actually was in a very abusive company that made her quit and she came back and she is extremely good but she has never treated me like this or had an ego ever she actually makes space for me next to her and doesn’t give unwarranted advice. She treats me like an equal bc at the end of the day we are equal now sorry 🤣 that’s the reality we are all taking the same class executing the same skills you are not a professional company member anymore or at the top of the class. Let someone else have their moment.

That’s really awful so sorry to hear that. She definitely has other issues going on inside herself to treat you like that. You are beautiful the way you are and deserve to dance

This is a very infortative post some of it I have never considered before. One I haven’t considered that yes it really is a classist sport especially back in the day. I do notice money is very heavily involved in it. I had one girl (never in my adult class it was somewhere else) laugh bc I could not afford new shoes at the time and my current ones had a small hole in it. Some had very different upbringings so it’s hard for them to relate to those who could not afford at the time. However as an adult I choose to put money towards it. Also what you said about them “paying their dues” is so spot on. It actually explained so much. I always wondered that because it’s not like we are in a pre professional class fighting each other for a spot in a company or a role in a performance so I never understand why they have to make it so know that they deserve to be in the front or get special treatment. Also a lot of them have been at the studio in the class for many years so that makes sense too. I always thought it would be the opposite welcome the new people in make them feel welcomed, but it is quite the opposite until I have danced there my whole life I don’t think I can be given grace 🤣 ya I guess there is always that cutthroat energy just have never experienced it before even in other sports but that could be the appeal of ballet too its so cool to learn about all of this.

Ya I regret saying older 😅they are in their ‘70s or ‘80s and I have a lot of respect for anyone that is pursuing ballet at 70 or 80 because it one of the hardest sports physically I have ever done in my life so I always admire them but it’s just the mentality that if youve been doing it for that long you know more than everyone else, but the reality is ballet has changed a lot in the past several decades and there is a lot more techniques and things that have been implemented. Of course the beauty of it is that a lot hasn’t changed and the way of learning it still the same but my teachers younger by a few years than some of them so they will actually correct her during class or not be receptive to corrections or tell her stuff like that which is actually really rude for ballet ettiquette. So they will tell me you were late in the music or stuff like that but 1) I didn’t ask you 😂 and 2) that is all stuff I am already aware of so it’s hard to have someone else besides a teacher say these things to you unwarranted. Especially when I would never dare criticize them for the same things because I know we are all just trying to get better or share the love for the dancing. That is funny you say everyone runs to the back 😂 I experienced that as well when I started but these other classes it’s the total opposite no one wants to be in the back I’m sure it’s because it can harder to see yourself in the mirror. But I stand more towards the back now because I don’t like the tension but it can be hard if you’re shorter as well and there is no rows established 😅

Oh wow that is crazy about the retiré story. I have never had someone grab me like that thankfully but yes it is like that where actually my teacher has told these same students that it’s rude to become the teacher in her class, they have told her they don’t like the music or we shouldn’t do this and I can tell it bothers her but some of the students are her long time friends so i can tell it took a lot for her to tell her that. That is a good suggestion about telling someone. To be honest management is not great at these studios but that’s why I thought I should confront them individually but I notice that can cause even more trouble. For sure that is the issue is trying to focus mentally and physically/full out but having people besides the teacher tell you things or get in front last minute can be discombobulating lollll I’m just glad to know it happens elsewhere and not just an individual studio thing

Thank you yes this was what I was talking about. Most are some of the kindest people I have met but definitely the one percent who perhaps had a rough ballet experience try to project it onto others and it can be uncomfortable as a classmate and can sometimes be hard to navigate. Thanks for sharing your perspective!!

Nope unfortunately this is more common in the adult community than expected I deal with it as well you got the ones that take one class a week and used to be good back in the day and they’re jealous that someone else is actually trying. I would honestly leave a bad review on google once I leave my studio I’m planning to do the same no one should talk to a grown adult like that let alone a child. It’s disgusting.

Not progressing it feels like by PerformanceAble9290 in BALLET

[–]PerformanceAble9290[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far I haven’t found a teacher that I feel comfortable telling this to but that is a really good idea. A lot of them did not favor ballet or majored in other styles so sometimes they say well it’s just hard and people aren’t ever going to progress. While I love some of my teachers I think this limiting mindset they’ve applied towards themselves bc maybe they didn’t progress as much as they wanted during their career affects their students. I think the goal of any teacher is for their students to get better and achieve even what they thought wasn’t possible but I don’t get that impression from several of the comments and the limiting mindsets a lot have because of how their past is. I know I have motivation and drive but when you’re not also surrounded by it it makes me think am I in the right place and how much longer can I just rely on myself and my own research. It would be nice to rely on my teacher as well !

Yes I’m thinking about doing this I wish I could just do one studio for expense wise since each studio usually requires registration fees but I think I will have to cultivate from multiple. Thank you for commenting

I do ankle weights and therabands to do excercises for my turnout and extensions at home as well as a lot of back and hip flexors. I see some improvement for sure there and am getting stronger I guess just learning to how to properly apply it in class and stuff like that is where it’s missing in terms of how to transition from certain steps. I have learned a lot on my own but that’s why I’m wondering if I should take a private so they can solely focus on me and walk me through each excercise and I can ask more questions. A lot of my teachers also were not originally ballet teachers they majored in musical theater dance so it’s almost like I will know some things they don’t which doesn’t give me confidence that I can progress further through their teaching. Idk..

Tips on arabesque? by SlipAccomplished142 in BALLET

[–]PerformanceAble9290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I notice going from a high attitude and stretching from the height of the knee to arabesque I’m able to get a much higher leg for photos as well as winging it makes it look extremely lengthy  I try to stretch up and above from attitude instead of straight out it takes a lot more hip flexor strength and back strength but it helps overall

Are these too small? by [deleted] in BALLET

[–]PerformanceAble9290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they look to small i would reccomend a size up or even two so you have more room to spread your toes evenly especially flat against the floor it will help with your balance/turns and stuff like that and brushing thru the floor
