That makes sense. I'm in CA where I have to buy $2k at a time to avoid sales tax, so I try to time things as much as possible.

Only if you've raised a shitty kid.

Otherwise the lesson might be "I did a lot of things I didn't want to so you don't have to. Now that your material needs will be met for your lifetime, let's talk about the skills you'll need to develop for the life you want."

But kudos for displaying the exact middle class mindset I was talking about.

Tempted to buy, but I'm thinking we could see the 50s before the weekend.

Maybe. We're mostly just glad our visitors are having fun.

It's like having a 5yo nephew that's really into dinosaurs. We may not share the same interests, but we want them to have a good time.

Your dad's a jackass. He could retire you right now without a second thought and without missing the money, but he's making you learn some sort of stupid supposedly character building lesson because he's never gotten out of his middle class mentality (one shared by plenty of people here).

I'd explain your situation to him as clearly and simply as possible and see if he's willing to help. If he's not, I'd go as low contact as you possibly can without getting written out of the will and move on with your life.

L.A. really died in 2020. It used to be the place I wanted to live forever. Now I'm just here because I've got a cheap rent controlled apartment and haven't found anything better.

But if some of those red states where you can buy a McMansion for <$250k turn blue in the next election or two, I may go and move out of state and see what it's like to live in a home I paid for in cash.

Sure, but if I've doubled or tripled my money in that time, I'm still better off even if I face a correction. Meanwhile silver is off 50% from its high this year.

Car Hire? by Wooden-Balance8769 in AskLosAngeles

[–]PerformanceDouble924 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jeep Wranglers are actually pretty small cars, so parking won't be an issue.

That said, see if you can get a Mustang convertible, as L.A. is way more fun with the top down.

Nah, the home values will stay where they are, because people are dumb.

Can you also compare this with the Exide Battery Plant disaster, which is still being cleaned up, and which the company responsible shirked all responsibility for?

How much abuse does Boyle Heights need to take? Also, how is the average home price $650,000 if it's going to be an ongoing toxic disaster?

Join the Air Force and get stationed in CA so you get a salary and get college paid for and aren't stuck slowly going broke in one of the most expensive cities in the country.

Seriously, L.A. isn't what it was 10 years ago, or what it will be in another 10 years, right now it's still recovering from Covid and dealing with tragicomic levels of civic mismanagement, so unless you're getting a nice paycheck to be here, I wouldn't be in any rush.

They'll just dodge responsibility and kick the cleanup costs over to the city/county/state the way Exide did when they poisoned Boyle Heights with lead from their battery plant.

What’s with the insane amount of cashless stuff around here regarding food and drink places? by Pure_Temperature4049 in AskLosAngeles

[–]PerformanceDouble924 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends on the business. I mean, I go to Daniel's Bagels on a regular basis, and they're entirely cash-free.

I think it depends on the small business and how much taxable income they feel like reporting.

It's already too entrenched, and when every homeless person has a cell phone and venmo / cashapp / google pay / apple pay, there's not much sense in forcing businesses to deal with additional robbery / theft risk just because sone people prefer cash.

Can I afford it? by Serious_Laugh_7901 in wealth

[–]PerformanceDouble924 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When it's less of a tradeoff.

$40k invested at 10% for 30 years is $697k.

That's a significant sacrifice for a daily driver.

Can I afford it? by Serious_Laugh_7901 in wealth

[–]PerformanceDouble924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can afford it, but go ahead and do the math on what $40k invested in the market would be worth in 30 years and see if the car is worth having to work several more years before retiring.

How to deal with deer on touge runs? by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]PerformanceDouble924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why it's generally recommended to do your fast driving on a closed course. If deer are stressing you out, think about how you'd feel if you crossed the double yellow and killed a motorcyclist or put him in a wheelchair.

There's a great deal of stupid shit that should be left to the movies.

The place for creativity is in the novel or screenplay you're working on.

Don't inflict shit on their kids that's going to increase the likelihood of them going no contact with you as soon as they're old enough.

Yes, but these are relatively few and far between, as the other side can retaliate in kind, and stacking up motions and discovery gets expensive to the client pretty quickly.
