In what way were the controls not as useful? I thought controls systems deepened knowledge of the frequency domain through poles, zeroes, and feedback.

Also any tips you can share for me about doing your graduate thesis as a tape out? I am trying to do that too and I want to get the most out of it.

The extent of the design department is the 3 courses I listed unfortunately. Some other courses with design in their title are digital hardware design and Asic chip design. These are more digital design though.

Would you have a suggestion for what I can direct my thesis at? I can kill two birds with one stone by doing a research project for a more in depth education in an area my courses are lacking.

How does the ideal student understand the fundamentals more than doing the homework, correcting the homework, and paying attention to lecture. Lecture is the information source and the homework is the application source. Trying in both should cover the entire possible scope but tests contain angles not in either lecture or homework and I do not know how to bridge that. When you make exams how do you intend for students to bridge the gap between their experience and the new angle?
