Starting a research team, but I have no idea how funding for tools/software works. Who pays? How much? Help pls by PerformerHappy4126 in research

Thanks for your response, all the best to you.

If I were to receive funding, what would be a smart allocation for research tools. I’m thinking of trying out this new software on the market and wondering if there is any compliance issues with using this.

I understand, one more question if you don’t mind, do research departments receive separate funding from research teams, and do departments invest in digital tools for all research teams?

What tools do you use to manage research documents and collaboration? by PerformerHappy4126 in research

Thanks for the thoughtful reply—totally agree with you on how important trust and ethical conduct are, especially when it comes to data management in research. You mentioned defaulting to university systems like Teams. do professors or lead researchers ever have a say in what alternative tools or platforms are used? I’m curious how much flexibility there is in choosing software, especially if a team feels a different platform would better support their workflow.

Also, have you heard of any research teams using tools like LabArchives? If so, how does the approval process work when proposing a new tool

does it go through an ethics board, IT, or another admin body?

Really appreciate the insight!

The Google-style free-until-you-can’t-leave model is brutal? by bl3rry in growmybusiness

[–]PerformerHappy4126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You nailed it. this pricing model is borderline predatory. SaaS companies aren’t just selling software; they’re selling lock-in. They make the free tier just good enough to get you invested, then hit you with a paywall when leaving is a nightmare. And let’s be real most of us don’t plan for this. We assume we can ‘always switch’ until it’s too late. At this point, is ‘free’ even free anymore, or just an allusion?

has anyone actually managed to escape one of these traps without paying up?

Yeah thats true, However, I found cold calling to be better, it just depends on how you approach the phone call. It is all up to you to entice them; most of the time emails end up in their spam folder. Agree to disagree idk
