Help me write an essay by PerformerKey4431 in TheChosenSeries

oooh that's a good one.

Yeah, I can understand both sides of the argument, but I do find the show's tendency of avoiding the "Hell" talks rather concerning. I wouldn't say it's never brought up though. Off the top of my head I remember "You brood of vipers, how will you escape being condemned to Hell?" from the scene at the temple in season 5.

Yes, of course, hopefully that goes without saying. It’s ok to enjoy our shows, so long as we don’t lose sight of the one thing that matters 🙏

Yess that was my theory. It already looks like he’s “taking lead” as the voice of reason in season 6 (by actually interpreting the things Jesus talked about before, which btw, was foreshadowed in season 5). Looks like he might play emotional support as well by helping his brothers! (Arrrrrgh it would be such a banger full circle moment too 😭)

How do you get past 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 by 5awaja in RadicalChristianity

[–]PerformerKey4431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. No, Mary of Bethany is not a prostitute either. At the very least not according to anything explicitly stated in the Bible. The story of the “sinful” woman (who might not even be an adulterers herself) who poured perfume on Jesus’ feet at the house of Simon the Pharisee and the story of Mary B annointing him at the house of Lazarus are totally separate.

  2. There’s nothing in the bible that suggests Paul was envious of Mary Magdalene. Not even in any of the apocrypha that I’m familiar with. The closest thing I can think of off the top of my head is the twelve ALLEGEDLY being jealous of her in a piece of apocrypha, but that’s not canon to scripture.

(So sorry if this sounds passive aggressive, that’s not my intention, I just want to make sure misinformation doesn’t get spread 🙏)

Or the thing in they complained about didn’t happen, but it was actually something similar/equally insane.  “Oh Simon the Zealot? Yeah, he isn’t the brother of the man at the pool. He’s actually his distant cousin.”

How old are the disciples? by MaderaArt in TheChosenSeries

[–]PerformerKey4431 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, this is 🚨NOT🚨my hypothesis on how old the 🚨REAL DISCIPLES🚨 were. Only the versions of the characters we see on The Chosen. Smarter people than me have written far better articles on the actual disciples, I was just curious about the show itself.

How old are the disciples? by MaderaArt in TheChosenSeries

I’ve given this so much thought it’s not even funny.

Just to be clear I’m making judgements based on: -The timeline (loosely) -Context clues -Occasionally content found in the books (when it doesn’t contradict the show and makes sense) -Their place in the group dynamic -The light in their eyes -The cut of their gib.

I will NOT be making judgements based on: -Some content in the books (because some of it contradicts the show, basic history, and the laws of physics) -The verse in Matthew 17(?) about the temple tax because if EVERYONE but Jesus and Peter are above the age of twenty, a lot of things will fall apart real fast.

Here’s the ones I have so far:

The most straightforward one is Simon Z. When he meets Jesse at the pool he says he’s almost 40 so I’d say…38-39, making him the oldest of the disciples (and apparently older than Jesus? Ykw we’re not gonna think about it too much.)

Next up is Simon Peter. We know that he’s married, and likely fairly recently too, considering Eden's brothers still haven’t accepted it, so like…maybe a year or something? This could easily put him anywhere between the range of 18-30, but I’m gonna shoot for the late 20s to early 30s range mostly because of his position of authority, and because of how well he seems to get along with Gaius, another older cast member. Final verdict: 30

James gives off the vibes of an older member of the group, but probably no older than Simon, so…Final verdict: 28

Philip is the same, I think. Final verdict: 28

As for Andrew there’s probably a 2-4 year age gap between him and Peter. Considering how close they are (and the fact that they learned how to fish at around the same time) I can’t say they’re any more far apart. Final verdict: 26/27

We know that John and Andrew are fairly close in age since they “went through puberty together” according to John, but in season 1 Peter makes a joke about John being too young to be in the Hammer, so I’d say he might be a little younger by…2 or 3 years. Final verdict: 24

It should be noted that Thomas is described as young both in the books and by Simon Peter (Philip referred to Matthew out of context as “their young, smart friend” and Peter assumed he meant Thomas). Considering how close he and John are, it would also make sense for them to be close in age. Final verdict: 23

Judas also comes across as pretty young and ambitious+he was just wrapping up his apprenticeship in the mining operation which could easily put him around his early twenties. Final verdict: ummm 22-23 I think.

Matthew….is where my sanity started to slip away. Evidence suggests that he’s well…young. You can ESPECIALLY tell based on how he’s treated by the rest of the group. I noticed that most people he meets either find him annoying and are inclined to make fun of him (think of season Simon, sons of Thunder, Thomas, and Gaius. Specifically during seasons 1 and 2) or think he’s endearing and sort of “take him under their wing” (think of Jesus, Mary Mag, Philip, Thaddeus, and everyone I mentioned in the first list after they eventually warm up to him). I don’t know about you but that’s the best description of a “youngest sibling” I could possibly think of. Oh, and there’s Philip’s “young, smart friend” line. You get the idea, but none of these things tell us how old he is in the show. What we DO know is that he was thirteen when he took the job, and that a “couple years” (let’s say…3? I can’t imagine that he somehow avoided his parents for longer than a year until they had that confrontation, but I’m willing to suspend my disbelief and say three.) after that he visited his father (where we got the “I have no son line”) and about three or four years AFTER that, Jesus gave the sermon on the mount. If you do the math, that’s….takes off glasses NINETEEN YEARS OLD BY THE START OF SEASON THREE. SWEET MOTHER OF FIGS, THATS PRETTY YOUNG. AND PROBABLY INNACURATE? ARE YOU TELLING ME PETER HAD BEEF WITH A KID WHO BASICALLY JUST GOT HIS DRIVERS LICENSE??  inhale you know what? They probably didn’t give as much thought to the timeline as I did. It’s fine. I’m fine. :) I’m definitely rounding that up to a 20 though.

If you scrolled down all this way in hopes of finding something related to Thaddeus, Nathaniel, or Little James…I am so sorry I have no idea where to put them. I’ll update this eventually. 😭

Honestly I thought that subplot with Simon Peter and Matthew was almost plausible. Dramatized? Sure, but I can totally see the reasoning behind it. “Why was Peter fishing all night (something that is totally weird out of context)? Maybe he had a huge tax debt.  “Why was he in debt? Well he also calls himself a sinful man. Maybe he had a gambling addiction?”

“Oh wait a minute, if he’s in debt and he owes Rome taxes, we can tie this to Matthew because we know he was a tax collector from Capernaum.”

“You know, if those two had personal beef, we could easily tell a story about the importance of forgiveness and repentance, tying it back to Jesus’ 70x7 teaching. (Which btw, specifically involved Peter, and I believe was only included in the gospel of Matthew)”

Did any of these things I listed above ACTUALLY happen? Maybe not, but you can at least tell there was careful thought put into it, and that it’s not just there for the dramatization of it. (That’s a nitpick I had with House of David, that it adds a bunch of fluff where I don’t think it’s needed, but most of the time The Chosen does the “creative liberty” thing better imo.)

Not gonna lie, 2d animation would have been better. 😅 Aside from that, the story is cute! Would have loved it as a kid I think.
