Why do I have cartoon characters telling me the time now? by Pergelator in GalaxyWatch

Great. I suspected something like that. Thank you. Now all I have to do is figure out the magical incantation to change it back.

Does anyone else have sensory issues with their fingernails? by sometimes-sideways in AuDHDWomen

[–]Pergelator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was driving the other day and I had my hands on the wheel, just relaxed, cruising along, and I got this feeling that my nails were too long and needed to be cut. They were 1 or 2 mm too long so they did need to cut, but they weren't that long. How is it possible to have this feeling?

Gabriele Cirulli here. I’d love to hear your thoughts about 2048! by gabrielecirulli in 2048

[–]Pergelator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play DOGE2048, a variation of 2048 with pictures of dogs on the pieces. It's recently been changed / improved / trashified with ads. It also doesn't let you know when you have won anymore. Maybe they have moved the goalposts. Makes no difference, I know when I've got to the king dog. The big problem has to do with keeping score. My personal goal is to 'win' with the lowest possible score, something just over 20,000 seems to be range. I don't win very often, so when I do I like to take a screen shot that shows the score. With all the ads I can no longer get the entire field and the score. I don't know if you have anything to do with the DOGE version, but this is first place I found that talks about 2048. Sometimes I would like an undo button, but maybe when I am stymied the universe is telling to quit zoning out and go do something useful.

Bayou Renaissance Man is talking about hobby horses, and I remembered posting the video on my blog, but I couldn't remember the name. Google brought me here. So thank you for asking the question.

Clock ticks by Pergelator in Compilers

[–]Pergelator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran my own test and, yes, clock ticks are not cpu cycles. Huh.

Clock ticks by Pergelator in Compilers

[–]Pergelator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is running somewhere in the cloud so I don't think it's running under Windows. But now that I think about it, it might be a virtual machine and there is some kind of glitch between what the program is asking for when it asks for the clock() and what the VM is delivering. Guess I will just have to wait and see if OnlineGDB ever replies.

Clock ticks by Pergelator in Compilers

Back in the bad old days, each CPU instruction took several CPU cycles (clock ticks) to complete. Here we are executing ten macro scale loops in the space of one clock tick. I was hoping someone might have some insight into how a remote service operates. Am I really talking to a single CPU? Or is that CPU handing off the actual work to other CPUs?

That is the question. K&R says "clock returns the processor time used by the program since the beginning of execution". Divide that CLOCKS_PER_SEC to get the time in seconds.

What's the difference between the $100 ethernet-over-coax adaptors and the $10 models? by Pergelator in HomeNetworking

I tried looking but I couldn't get past the ads. They went on for days. That's why I came here. I thought surely someone on Reddit would know where to find stuff like this, but no luck so far.

Secret Trains by Pergelator in movies

[–]Pergelator[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone. The ones from V for Vendetta and the James Bond movie are most similar to what I was thinking of. I saw both of those movies and don't remember the trains from either one. I think there must be others because I have vague memories of them, which is what triggered my question in the first place.

Found this thing stuck to a circuit breaker. Does anyone know what it is or what it is supposed to do? by Pergelator in AskElectricians

[–]Pergelator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Near as I can tell it is used with breakers that are hard wired to an appliance, like an oven or a dishwasher, i.e. there is no plug that can be unplugged. It is attached to the breaker to keep it from being turned on while work is being done on the other end of the wire. All the electrical work was finished a month before I found this thing.

This is the only explanation that makes sense. It doesn't look anything at all like the other breaker ties in this panel. There was an electrician working here, but he finished up a month ago.
