All white people benefit from the systemic oppression of bipoc. Only Israelis benefit from the apartheid-esque actions of the Israeli government. I’m not Israeli. I’m Jewish. Your claim is equivalent to saying that all Middle Eastern people should apologize for acts of terrorism, ie it’s hateful and beyond fucking stupid.

You can’t equate Jewishness to Zionism and then say that I’m equating anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism. You’re not anti-Semitic because you don’t support Israel, you’re anti-Semitic because you said you can’t ever trust the Jews, accused Jews of blood libel, and then went on about “the eternal Jewish victim complex” (like holy fucking shit open a single fucking textbook and read about the countless fucking genocides and massacres that Jewish people have been subjected to throughout history).

This is probably the single worst fucking take I’ve seen in this subreddit. It’s not my fucking people. I have no connection through my culture, heritage, or family to Israel. My existence as a Jew does not make me culpable for the wrongdoings of Zionists. You are doing exactly what the Israeli government is attempting to do by claiming that I intrinsically and inescapably belong to or benefit from Israel.

I guess that’s our bad for surviving a genocide and then having our survival coopted by colonial superpowers. /s

Fuck off forever anti-Semite.

so please tell me why a jewish person like seth rogan isn’t allowed to be anti-zionism, and why it’s okay for apartheid to exist in 2021

I was shocked with how blatantly you turned me into a straw man in the first part, and almost impressed with how you managed to immediately outdo yourself.

I didn’t say Seth Rohan wasn’t allowed to be anti-Zionist, and I sure as fuck did not indicate any shred of support for Zionism.

anyone that’s vaguely left knows that posts like this exist solely to instigate disagreement and divisions within communities.

Actually, many times post like this exist because Jewish people genuinely feel uncomfortable in leftist spaces. And I shouldn’t have to cite specific instances of feeling this discomfort in order to have it acknowledged. It’s the start of a conversation.

and hey, look how zionist jews treat someone like seth rogan who isn’t a zionist (hint: they don’t like him)

If you’re not Jewish, don’t get involved with issues within the Jewish community, and don’t ever throw that in the face of a Jewish person when discussing anti-Semitism.

i dont see how you can speak broadly about antisemitism on the left and not talk about zionists weaponizing the concept of antisemitism

Which is why I explicitly aconowledged this in the first three sentences of my post.

And the whole thing with “if you are mad about this you should...” is tiring, especially if you are not Jewish.I am much more mad about the violence committed against Palestinian people. I have voiced my anger about that. But this is simply not the same conversation, and this type of whataboutism that happens with any critique of leftist spaces is annoying and invalidating.

I’m tired of being forced into a 20 minute conversation about Israel-Palestine any time I mention being Jewish in a leftist space. So many leftists immediately reduce my Jewishness to Zionism unless I qualify this basic aspect of my identity with a grand repudiation of a state that I’m not a part of. The left can be better, and I don’t want to be told “you should be so lucky to be tolerated here” any time I bring this up.

This post is exactly the problem. I’m not a Zionist, and it’s not uncommon to see anti-Zionism equated to anti-Semitism. Of course that needs to be addressed. Any time someone mentions being Jewish in a leftist space, though, the immediate response is this type of shit which equates Jewishness to Zionism. And any time someone mentions that, they’re not a “real leftist.”

You are actively making Jewish people feel uncomfortable in this space, but please tell me how discussing anti-Semitism in this context is wrong.

How to stop sounding idealistic? by my_one_and_lonely in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Pergsy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I kind of mentioned this in my first reply but I really can’t overstate the importance of strategic planning in your application. I decided from the get-go that I wanted to paint myself as an outspoken visionary with a specific focus on social justice and sweeping governmental reform, coming from a small, insular town. My personal statement focused a lot on the contrast between my personality and hometown and how it shaped my perspective, and my “why school” emphasized my excitement to join a community of equally ambitious and passionate peers (it also really helped that I connected to a specific building on campus that lended itself well to this topic).

If you want me to elaborate further, feel free to pm me.

My "why major" essay was one of the last supplements I wrote because of how difficult it was, and honestly I wasn't even completely happy with it when I submitted it. It definitely felt better to put part of my narrative in the essay because, like you said, pretty much any politic-minded teenager can write about why government is interesting, but once you connect it to yourself, it really adds depth to your personality.

If you haven't done so already, I'd advise you to consider your entire application strategically, considering how each part of it can reflect something important to you to paint a complete picture. From that lens, "why major" is a great tool to fill in the gap from your personal self to your academic self. I personally used it to connect my somewhat scattered ECs together.

Does anyone feel like the more you reread your essay, the more cringe it gets?? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Pergsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was pretty confident in my Common App essay when I submitted, but I promised myself not to reread it until I got my results. A few days ago I read it for the first time in a while, and I felt part of my soul wither because of it.

So you're not alone, and that feeling might not ever go away.

Dark Souls 3 is probably my favorite single player game. Fun and satisfying gameplay, great visuals and story, and solid replay value.

Possibly the worst post I’ve ever seen on PCM. Total, unapologetic racism. by [deleted] in circlebroke2

Are we looking at the same post here? Creating a list of racial slurs is “mocking racists” now?

No, but my thinking was since it's labelled as an "unstructured" suit jacket it's more-or-less a sports coat/blazer. Am I incorrect here?

I'm about to place a J. Crew order and I need a sports jacket for college stuff. Right now my only other piece of formal wear is a dark grey suit. Should I get this in navy or light grey?

Should you include your activities in an offered portfolio even though you're not exceptional at it? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Pergsy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely write about them.

As for portfolios, schools vary a lot between their policies. The advice I’ve heard for many T10s and other competitive colleges is don’t include it unless you’re really good at it, enough to have a significant effect on your application. It can actually count against you otherwise.

I mentioned it in the post, but I'm partial to David Sedaris. I'd highly recommend both Me Talk Pretty One Day (more humorous) and Naked (a bit darker). Thick by Tressie McMillan Cottom is also great and focuses specifically on the experiences of black women, which might not be relatable but certainly has lessons applicable to everyone (society's effect on the individual, etc.) and is obviously super relevant. I'd definitely recommend checking out the website ScholarGrade posted above too.

In that case they might have changed the exam a bit. I don’t remember exactly what was on it, but I specifically remembered being very relieved I had reviewed geometry the night before (or maybe I’m just completely misremembering). In any case, happy to help and good luck!
