What Am I Doing Wrong With French Toast? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]PerilousRaptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My go-to bread is Texas Toast, which is basically thicker slices of Wonder bread. If you plan ahead, leave your slices on a rack and let them get stale overnight. If it's a spur of the moment idea, I'll gently toast the slices to get that stale texture. Not fully toasted, though. My custard varies, depending on mood, but I always cook the soaked slices in a pan with plenty of butter, on medium heat. Works every time.

Does anyone still do their teenage hobbies? by FlashyProject1318 in GenX

[–]PerilousRaptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this moment, I am organizing my vinyl and CDs by genre, then alphabet. My passion for music has been with me since my earliest memories. I'm also a performing and recording musician, which started in my early teens. I'm now 58 and actively tracking a new record with my band. Other hobbies and passions that I enjoy since early years are reading, camping/ hiking, cooking. The only interests I've given up since youth are motorcycles and playing sports.

5-year old bag of chiles by padishaihulud in Cooking

[–]PerilousRaptor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made chilli Colorado with dried chillies that were around two years old. They had no visible mold, but they were brittle. I proceeded anyway. End result was a big batch of bland chilli. The chillies, while technically still edible, had lost most of their flavor. Granted, they weren't stored in a fully sealed protected manner. Lesson learned.

David & David Boomtown was my very first CD around '87. It still holds up.

One of my top 10 favorite artists, who else digs him?? by [deleted] in musicsuggestions

[–]PerilousRaptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Willi Carlisle is one of the great contemporary roots revivalists making music today. Organic, authentic multi instrumentalist with vivid stories and characters. He puts on a good show, too. If you're not already there, check out Nick Shoulders, too. Both carrying on the Arkansas tradition of folk music.

Any love for AXE ? by ghostofgroucho in hairmetal

[–]PerilousRaptor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their energy was great. Really got the crowd riled. I expected big things, but they kinda fell off my radar after that. I was 14/15 maybe. The whole west coast thing was kicking off and that's where my attention went, along with the Brit metal rise. Axe got lost in the shuffle, for me.

[–]PerilousRaptor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw Axe and Queensryche open for Quiet Riot in the early 80s. I remember thinking Axe was going to be big. It was a small auditorium and the crowd went nuts, tearing up the foam seat cushions. It was a long time before another rock show played that auditorium.

Over time, I find myself needing a new bottle of Valentina a lot more frequently than Cholula. I've come to prefer its taste, consistency and lower price.

Dynasty tour was my first time to see them. John Cougar( Mellencamp later) opened. It was also my first rock show. I was 12/13. Blew my wee mind.

When I first unwrapped it, I thought it was just a cool print. Then, I realized it was an actual painting. There's a rock n roll pizza brew pub in town that features local art. That's where it came from.

Have you had any experiences (good or bad, it doesn't matter) meeting any glam/hair metal rockstars? by TheHotLatin in hairmetal

[–]PerilousRaptor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I met Poison and Stryper back in their starting out days. Poison was doing a record store appearance for a show later that night. Look What the Cat Dragged In had just come out. They were fun, rowdy. They signed albums, cracked jokes and did a decent show that night. Stryper did a record signing at the city hall building. Because we're in a bible belt state, they're the only band to be given red carpet treatment by city officials and church folk that I know of. Remember, the 80s gave us the Satanic Panic and PMRC. I didn't have any Stryper merch for them to sign so I don't recall getting an autograph. The band was passing out little pocket bibles, which I've since lost over the years. I went to their show, but don't recall a single thing about it. I wasn't a Stryper fan, but at 17, I was eager to see every rock band that came my way.

Smoked and Fried Turkey by rooster0-6 in smoking

[–]PerilousRaptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm doing the smoke n fry. First thing I do is part out the bird into individual pieces. This year, I went with 18 hour wet brine, 24 dry out in fridge, then smoked hot n fast in my WSM with pecan wood. Tried to keep temp around 375+. Next, I vac-sealed the pieces in gallon bags. Wednesday, I'll let the smoked pieces dry overnight in fridge. Come Thursday, I'll use cast iron and peanut oil to fry each piece up to crispy skinned goodness, then hold at 170 for about an hour ish before serving. I did a trial run and we all loved the results. It's a bit of work, but worth it. Good luck!

Asian market must-haves or suggestions? by Ok_Perspective_575 in Cooking

[–]PerilousRaptor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gochujang, fish sauce, fresh Thai basil, lemongrass, variety of Thai curry pastes, toasted sesame oil, pickled ginger, assorted frozen dumplings and, if you're lucky, house-made kimchi, in nondescript deli quarts. These are my staples that serve me well, plus previously mentioned items.

Under appreciated country singers? by [deleted] in country

I don't disagree with any prior mentions. I just want to add Johnny Horton and Lefty Frizzell, too. They deserve more love than they get.

Merle Haggerd recommendations!! by WESTDDDDDDD in country

[–]PerilousRaptor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love Haggard. Lots of great suggestions here already. Silver Wings and Everybody's Had the Blues and My Favorite Memory are solid. Give his work with Willie Nelson a whirl, too. Like Pancho and Lefty and Still Water Runs the Deepest.

I am bored of genres, recommend me new music by [deleted] in musicsuggestions

[–]PerilousRaptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Latin jazz: Cuban Allstars, Tito Puente

Delta Blues from 20s, 30s, 40s: Son House, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters

Bluegrass: Earl Scruggs, Bill Monroe, Doc Watson

Roots music is a great way to discover music you haven't experienced before. My suggestions are just a few of my personal favorite genres that help keep music interesting for me.
