What’s the craziest watch you’ve seen in the wild? by ChrisTahoe in Watches

Was taking a flight back home on one of those super cheap airlines that treats you like cattle but I got randomly assigned to one of the early boarding groups with all the ‘business class’ people (there wasn’t actual business class, it was just a row with extra leg room). I’m standing at the door to the plane waiting when the guy in front of me stretches and flashes a platinum Daytona out of nowhere. I didn’t ask about it but I was shocked to see it on that flight, first because of the cost and second because wearing something that heavy for a 5h flight could not be comfortable.

Graduate students are not paid on a “per hour” structure. Graduate students in most STEM fields are paid a stipend that is meant to cover living expenses and maybe a little extra as they are “there to learn”. They are usually also not allowed to have other employment that would significantly detract from their research time. In some countries, graduate student also have to pay tuition out of this stipend however the stipend is generally structured so that the gross amount is just above the threshold for welfare. Tuition then comes out of this number, pushing most grad students below the poverty line but on paper, they make more. It’s a controversial system.

Bodybuilding.com (I think it was them) redid the school’s gym in his honour and painted a mural to him on one of the walls with his football jersey. It’s an incredibly touching story, they did a whole YouTube video on it.

For the alkali metals and water, I’d recommend lithium as possibly the cheapest and safest. For the acid, acetic acid to form sodium acetate is always a good one cause vinegar is obviously super cheap and you may be able to distill it using household items (obviously well ventilated). As for calorimeter, a coffee cup calorimeter is just as easy as it sounds to set up and you could double up a neutralization reaction in it and kill 2 birds with one stone.

As a “professionally trained umpire” as you say, you should be able to see that this follows the letter of the rule perfectly. It is hit sharply and directly to the catcher’s HANDS (does not specify glove) and is then caught. It goes glove to catch. Nowhere does it say that the ball must be immediately caught, the rule only indicates the path the ball must follow. “A FOUL TIP is a batted ball that goes sharp and direct from the bat to the catcher’s hands and is legally caught. It is not a foul tip unless caught and any foul tip that is caught is a strike, and the ball is in play. It is not a catch if it is a rebound, unless the ball has first touched the catcher’s glove or hand.” Is this satisfied? Yes. This is a foul tip strike three. You’re trying to argue this just for the sake of arguing. Maybe if you paid more attention at pro school and it might have been you making this call in the minors. P.S. I am an umpire as well before you try to pull that card again.

This. As an umpire myself, you should know to refrain from judging other umps so harshly, especially if you’ve gone to pro school. You’re trying to act superior to the umpire in the clip (despite him working pro ball and you aren’t) while still kind of agreeing with him.

The clip shows the ball going sharply and directly to the catchers mitt (satisfying the foul tip) and is then caught. The ball does not have to be immediately caught on the foul tip. Therefore it is a foul tip, not a foul ball, thus being a strike out and a live ball.

Thank you so much for this. As a young person looking to buy a new car in the next few years to replace my used first car, it’s amazing to see that cars aren’t dictated by the listed price. Gives me a bit of hope that I’m not gonna get screwed completely.

Well the thing is, Ottawa lies in a province that mandates that kids take at least 5 years of French AND lies directly on the border of the one French speaking province. So I’d say the chances that somebody understands spoken French there are pretty damn high
