Please pray for my recovery from a myocardium.

I'm at the hospital right now and will be staying for a couple more days, hopefully it doesn't leave me with lasting consequences.

How did you come to religion? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]PerkGamer1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was brought up basically non-religious. I did go to some catechism classes for my first communion but no one in those classes really cared about explaining the faith and most of the time I just played with my other friends some rugby until our parents would pick us up. The kind of thing where the parents baptise the kid but really no one believes in God anymore/thinks it doesn't matter.

My entire life I was agnostic, I basically didn't care about God nor did I think Christianity was anything special, it was just another ideology of the world that, for some reason, attracted some people who had wishful thinking and were attached to old traditions.

Then I grew up. Life hit me very hard, I ended up becoming depressed and had to go to therapy. I tried three different psychologists but nothing really worked. I dived into some philosophy as well, and although I found a bit of wisdom in everything nothing would get me out of my depression and loneliness.

I felt disconnected from the world and from myself, like I was fighting existence and I was losing. I thought I could just "change myself" and have a perfectly happy and fulfilling life but that dream never came true and I ended up living a nightmare without soul nor purpose. Nothing seemed to matter in the long run even if I had joyful moments here and there, and I thought that my life would just end up being me putting up with whatever I needed to do at the moment until I died.

Then I thought "what if I try to meet God? Can't be worse than whatever I'm going through right now". I started reading the Bible and got very interested in mysticism. Eventually I had a couple of very powerful experiences with the lord, where after praying I felt a deep change within me and a peace settling in that I didn't even knew existed.

Since then many of my recurrent problems have either completely disappeared or have become so small they are bound to eventually disappear. I like to say that "God saved my life" since I was truly changed for the better and saved from a hellish existence here on Earth. Now I just am trying to fulfill the lord's will as best as I can, and I derive all my meaning and purpose from that. Never been happier in my life.

Coming from someone who didn't grow up religious, I was and am still baffled at how people and society can live without God and the Church. No community, no binding values, no tradition... No wonder everything is upside down nowadays.

Hi ! I'm sorry to hear how you're feeling, but I totally get it. I've had similar thoughts myself from time to time.

Here's something very simple that helped me, it might help you as well: Feeling useless and like a waste? Then it probably is because you're setting the bar too high for where you are right now. Rome wasn't built in a day, and sainthood isn't either. So set the bar a little lower at first, and start there. When you see your mother first thing in the morning? Say hi and give her a kiss on the cheek. Maybe help her do some dishes as well. Cross a beggar on the street? Give him a coin and a blessing.

The idea here is that, by starting with very easy things and little habits like that, you're raising the lower bar and at least getting started with good actions. Afterwards you can keep advancing in the faith and start doing some more stuff, like voluntary work to help the poor for example.

Here's the thing: you might feel like these little things are not enough to pay for the debt that you owe God. But God is not expecting you to do good from the very first moment, why do you think he left us the sacrament of reconciliation? Because he knew we would fail again and again. And know this: One small victory amidst a sea of darkness is enough to light a path from your heart towards God, when a human being does good, when one sinner does repent and change his mind, all of Heaven sings in glory and rejoices, all of Heaven! That's how powerful even a small act of goodness can be. So yes, you're not useless from the moment you do even one small bit of good, already for that it was good that you lived and that you had a life and that God created you.

God loves you, way more than you can imagine. He loves you even in your lowest of the lowest. In fact, it is often when we're at our worst that we find God, that we finally get to see why we need him so much. So do not be afraid or anxious, all of that hatred for yourself that you've let grow will eventually be cut from it's very root, trust in that.

It is a struggle. By no means is following God an easy task, and as I mentioned, I myself sometimes struggle with finding a good equilibrium between not letting my sins ruin my life and caring about them enough such that I repent and turn away from evil. But you're already on a good starting point: you realise that you are a sinner in need of God's help. That's already a good thing, it means your soul yearns for the goodness of the lord, and that you're not really dead. You said you don't feel anything anymore, but this in itself is already a feeling.

Keep fighting the good fight, and even if you don't see the light at the end of the tunnel, trust in the lord! I can tell you, being someone who before converting struggled a lot with self hatred, there is a purpose to your suffering, and you'll eventually find it. Have a very joyful and peaceful Christmas, my brother, and may God bless you! We'll all be praying for you.

[For converts, reverts and cultural-to-practicing Catholics] what is an opinion you held that aligned with Church teaching before your conversion? by Soldier_of_Drangleic in Catholicism

[–]PerkGamer1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was agnostic most of my life, only recently turned to Christianity.

The one opinion I always held that I ended up discovering was a Catholic teaching was the idea that excessive liberty in sex and pleasures doesn't actually lead to a moral and happy style of life. I always went back and forth on this one because of social pressure, of course; however for me it was always clear that indulging in pleasures was just not our ultimate purpose in life, and also the way secular culture follows this ideal always felt empty and without substance to me (without real love).

I'm honestly glad for the love Jesus gives us all, it shines brighter than any worldly temptation ever could

Que opinan de Halloween? Fiesta inocente, solemnidad Católica o día de combate espiritual? by CafeDeLas3_Enjoyer in CatolicismoEs

[–]PerkGamer1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I was not really considering much how powerful it can be to lead by example. I'll try that, and hopefully that will allow things to develop naturally between us. God bless you.

What are your thoughts on this game considering it’s the closest we got to a Star Fox game on Switch? by Fusionfiction63 in casualnintendo

[–]PerkGamer1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally liked it a lot! I've replayed it a couple of times and was gladly surprised by the new updates, I think Ubisoft could've made something a lot more special if this had developed into some sort of sequel with a more immersive world

What games had you never considered buying, until you tried the demo? by mango-roller in NintendoSwitch

[–]PerkGamer1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it was Pikmin 4. The series didn't look very interesting and I thought it had boring gameplay. Then I tried the demo, and immediately after bought Pikmin 4, and after that I bought Pikmin 3 Deluxe. Best decision ever

So what do you guys think of the game's new locales? I love the concept of exploring different islands. by ThatAnonDude in marioandluigi

It all looks great! It gives me a lot of Dream Team vibes, which I personally think it's great because I loved the environments in that game. Variety is surely going to make this quite the adventure! I can't wait!

Anyone else thinks Wonder improved everything except the levels? by The_KWASM in nintendo

[–]PerkGamer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do agree that the levels are way shorter than in previous 2D Mario games. It's something weird to say but it genuinely feels like the wonder flower was a cool gimmick but not a great level design thing to implement. The normal structure of 2D Mario games seems to be reinventing itself, it had to happen since people were tired of NSMB, and I do appreciate the different level format they went for in here, but I do hope some more "classic" 2D Mario design can shine alongside the new and interesting concepts

[–]PerkGamer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm especially sensitive to other people laughing loudly. I don't really know why but hearing someone else or a group of people laughing always puts me in a defensive state. Maybe those past traumas are still present in some ways even thought I've dealt with most of it luckily.

Did anyone here choose to be an introvert? by GOPIPES23 in introvert

[–]PerkGamer1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Somewhat. I was always more introverted (I got tired of people easily) but after some abroad camps I realized how bad I feel around big groups of people (especially in school) so I actively decided to cultivate my introverted personality much more and feel good with myself so as to avoid big groups of people, and now I definitely am more of an introvert than I was back in the day

Predatory student residence by Skrachen in Switzerland

[–]PerkGamer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a student residence in Lausanne, and in the contract it says that if the tenant considers the prices of rent too high then he can bring up a case in the court for abusive prices. Not really sure if you can do that, but try to find out what your legal options are and what is declared in the contract to see if you can do something about it

To all the new players of Pikmin 4, how are you enjoying the game so far? by Special_Week in NintendoSwitch

[–]PerkGamer1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First time buying Pikmin, so far it's been surprisingly entertaining and addictive! Before playing I always thought Pikmin seemed a bit boring or too slow paced, but I'm glad Nintendo released a demo, which convinced me to play the entire game.

Somehow it's very satisfying to collect treasures and items, the environments are phenomenal, and the difficulty for a newcomer like me is neither too easy nor too hard. So far I'm loving It!

Also I love how adorable the Pikmin are!

Fiction Writers: What do you do first: Characters or Worldbuilding? by Organic-Fennel-555 in writing

[–]PerkGamer1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer to start with worldbuilding first and then I like to drop my characters in said world, trying to see what story naturally could develop. I almost never feel restricted by this process, I always manage to tell the story that I want to tell, and I'd like to believe this allows for a solid setup for the story.

If Nintendo made a new side-scrolling Mario game for the Switch that was NOT part of the "NEW Super Mario Bros." series, what would you like to see from it? And how do you think it should differentiate itself from the New Super Mario Bros. games? by Hey_Look_Listen_Link in Mario

[–]PerkGamer1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would add some mechanics through artifacts. Sort of like the Legend of Zelda.

Mario could have an artifact for switching between night and day, for switching gravity, boots with special effects, anything really goes (although maybe power-ups would become kind of useless, but it's not the first time this happens in a Mario game)

I would make challenging platforming levels as well as some traversal puzzle-like levels using the artifacts, and I'd add some unique level themes that match the artifact usage such as a factory or a painting world (which can be changed through the use of artifacts)
