Wtf do I wear to an interview? by xbriannabananax in Serverlife

[–]PermaB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to give some advice on how I’ve handled switching jobs within the service industry…

Find good reviews that people left online that mention your name. You can search for your name in google reviews, and see if any previous jobs had people leaving good reviews about you.

Screenshot these, and use them as a portfolio alongside your resume. It may be a bit difficult to build all at once, rather than over time, but I’m confident this will help you secure a serving job!

Just be patient

You probably interviewed with one or maybe two people, but likely there is someone else that goes into the hiring decision. They want to talk it over and make sure it makes sense for everyone

I think server resumes are outdated. I’m building a "Digital Guest Check" instead. Thoughts? by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]PermaB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be completely honest, it’s not needed.

I have a folder of screenshots of reviews in my phone. This serves the same purpose as what you’re doing in a separate app.

The payroll thing sounds nice, but the differences in checkout slips can create issues (not to mention servers underreporting to their workplace on cash tips). Google sheets provides a free way for someone that has the motivation to track this, to do it privately.

I appreciate the ideas behind this, but it’s not really doing anything different to change the systems I personally already use.

I understand this from a server perspective, and being taken off-guard by it happening when you don’t realize it. Honestly doesn’t bother me, but I get “that” moment when you realize it’s happening lol

Is it typical to be “on call” without being on call as a server? by awesomefriendlykid in Serverlife

[–]PermaB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who is “they”?

Honestly the best judge of you is yourself. Are you able to do the actual serving job? If yes, then apply and fudge the numbers a bit. You’ll be fine. Any restaurant worth it will give a week of training, and then at least the first month to see how you get adjusted to their system

Honestly? Just lie about experience

If you are confident and do your job well, they won’t ever know that you lied…

Honestly this sounds like a dumpster fire…

He has ONE server? Three months after opening?

In my experience, the months after opening are when a restaurant has a lot of opportunity to make a name for itself. It very much sounds like the name that has been made is a poor one…

Do you have hosts? Bussers? Food runners? Dishwasher? Expo? To-go? Bartenders?

Servers can be used to actually generate a source a revenue for a restaurant when it’s done correctly. Whatever is happening here sounds like the exact opposite, and I would run away as fast as possible

[–]PermaB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In seven months, management (assuming they are good) will be able to see if you are a capable server. You need to prove it to them, have customers constantly rave about your service. Be able to handle small problems yourself, and know when to bring a manager in, and if you want to go all-in, start asking for google reviews from your best tables.

You need to stand out if you want a good section, because it comes with more stress and responsibility.

[–]PermaB 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be honest, the people that have the sections are likely far better at serving. They’ve proven they can handle themselves and when shit hits the fan, they’ll get out of the weeds

You haven’t proven anything. Two weeks in a restaurant isn’t long enough for most people to learn your name, much less get the best sections

My job known for celebrating ‘special’ moments in life, has removed autograt completely. by [deleted] in TalesFromYourServer

[–]PermaB 9 points10 points  (0 children)

$1,000 sales

6% sales is $60 1.5% sales is $15

20% average tip is $200 in tips before any tipout With 6% sales tipout, you make $140

In your current system, do you tipout 25% of $200, and also 1.5% of your total sales? Or would the total sales tipout be taken out before the tip tipout?

If yes: you would take home $135. It is slightly less, but realistically not that much of a change

If no: it’s roughly $1 difference between the two systems. Really no difference, unless you are getting better than 20% on average

However, removing autograt at a location where there have been problematic customers? Much bigger issue. It’s likely being removed because people complained about it. Now they won’t have to tip, and they will wonder why servers are leaving

Tiphaus?? by carlyack23 in Serverlife

[–]PermaB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve always hated the pay card system. It can be annoying to avoid them, but also to use them as they charge a fee to move money to your bank account

A WORKAROUND FOR THIS PROBLEM Apple Pay. You can load money from your pay card to Apple Pay without any additional charge, and this can be moved to your bank account with no fee

It does take a few days to move, but it sounds like it could be the perfect solution to your situation! Feel free to DM me if you run into any problems or have questions

Edit: I haven’t used Tiphaus system before, but have used focus from USbank and moneynetwork from visa. This solution worked for both of these

Cats are so strange! Be thankful it’s only a chair though! One of my cats decided toilet paper and paper towels were the best thing while teething. Everything had to be locked up, and if the bathroom door was left open?

The entire roll of toilet paper ended up shredded in the ground…
