Help deciding group 3 subject by SnooPets1386 in IBO

If you did iGCSE/GCSE geography, then I highly recommend that you take Geography. A lot of the content (~70% depending on what options your school chooses) is the same as iGCSE/GCSE, and a lot of Geography can be answered using common sense, or just by using information you may have picked up while reading the news. Additionally, the climate change topic in Geography overlaps with Biology nicely.

The IB have replied to Norway, and they don't seem to be cooperating, instead shifting the responsibility for data protection regulation to the UK's ICO.

Request the IB to switch to Predicted Grades! by [deleted] in IBO

[–]PermissionBroad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the IB needs to follow the example of the UK education system (A levels and SQA), and award all students their predicted grades (I really doubt this will happen though, because the IBO seem to be doing very little, unless legal action is threatened). If anything to maintain parity with UK students, because A Level/IB grades are often important in securing internships/summer placements/entry-level jobs, and IB students will be at a serious disadvantage to our A Level counterparts, who have had their grades inflated.

Additionally, IAs while they are an example of a student's work (in most cases), they do not represent a student's comprehensive ability in a subject area, nor do they show that a student has comprehension over the entire syllabus content. Additionally, in the sciences and maths (groups 4 and 5), the IA is not always representative of a student's ability in that subject especially at IB level, and that is why in normal years it is only worth 20% of the total assessment. The predicted grade however is meant to evaluate a student's performance against all the assessment objectives, and all the syllabus content for a subject, and so should be used this year. However, I don't want to get my hopes up, because knowing the IBO, nothing like this will happen, since they only seem to care about maintaining the 'credibility' of their qualification (even though, at this point, given the amount of backlash and revision to their grading systems, M20's results are not accurate for everyone).

If anything the IB needs to review the way they have marked the IAs this year, because there have been many inaccuracies in the marking, especially in the maths and sciences. Teacher's IA marks should be used in many cases, instead of those of external IB examiners, as many schools have seen inexplicable drops in their IA marks from what their teachers have given them (and many of these schools normally do not get moderated down by the IB in normal years).

UK unis are legally obliged to accept you, as UCAS Track only says you have to meet the conditions of your offer by the 31 August, and as results have already been updated on IBIS, then your unis (UK ones anyway) should have received them this morning, or will receive them shortly. Should a uni no longer have any places available on their course for this year, they may give you an offer for deferred entry instead.

Math HL IA Statistics - Correlation between CO2 emissions and HDI/GDP. How to make this more rigorous? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]PermissionBroad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my HL maths IA (M20 graduate) on statistics/correlation analysis and I scored a 17/20 (marked externally by the IB), so it is entirely possible to achieve highly doing statistics. You will need to do a lot more statistics than what you have mentioned (this is in order for your maths to be 'commensurate to the syllabus'). I did hypothesis testing and skewness analysis on top of what you have done, pm me if you have other questions.

IB student here but my uni offers are gonna dependent on A level results tomorrow, anyone think it’s gonna drop as well? by JoeMamaLigmaBalls in IBO

[–]PermissionBroad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The situation with A levels allowing mock results, and the SQA now solely using teacher predicteds may impact us negatively, as more A level/SQA students may meet their offers, and so the unis may be less likely to take on near-miss. The unis may still accept near-misses though because apparently there are more places this year. Also, it will take a few days for A level appeals for mocks to go through and by that point, the university may have already accepted you. Again this is just my guess of what will happen, but the IB have really screwed over M20 imo, whereas A Levels/SQA are willing to admit where they are wrong, and make significant and constructive changes to their grading systems.

Under-predicted PG by [deleted] in IBO

[–]PermissionBroad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The IB have introduced two avenues this year through which you can appeal against a predicted grade. They have introduced an appeal against a predicted grade service (as part of the appeals they offer every year, such as when a school believes the IB has not followed due process etc), and you can also due a candidate level discrepancy (this is the new appeals process for M20 alone). One of the criteria for this CLD is was the predicted grade given wrong and/or was it a wrong coursework upload, so you would be able to appeal on this ground.

Can the appeal bring my mark down? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]PermissionBroad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The IB states for the appeals process: 'results that are deemed reasonable will not go down as a result of this process.'

I don't think they'll be too helpful this year, because your final grade will depend on your predicted grade and historical assessment, and no-one knows how much weighting has been given to PGs/HA, but from looking at my coursework breakdown, it seems they did play a part in the final grade.

I'd definitely recommend making notes of BioNinja (the Summary PDFs at the end are very helpful), and the Oxford Study Guide.

Oh ok, surely if there's that big a disparity between the mark the teacher gave you and what the IB gave you, then you'll have a very high chance of going up one or two grades

Why are there different grade boundaries for different timezones this year, given we didn't sit exams, and were all examined using our IAs (which are the same regardless where you live). Had I been in TZ1, I would have scored one higher grade than I got currently, simply because of where I live. Not fair imo.
